3/26/2006 22:53:34 [ report this post ] | ...hey Muppy ....
Message: ...those Kiwi netballers are brilliant .....super aggressive and extraordinarily skilfull .... is it possible they have studied your chess strategy???? I am having a good run on the chess board at the moment - have now drawn twice against a much more highly rated player ....once by courtesy of his good grace and once by repetition ... there is a saying in golf ...its not "how" ... its always " how many" .... hope this applies equally to the great board game - I have "won" a few team games by timeout recentlyl!!!!!

3/27/2006 01:19:28 [ report this post ] | peterf,
Message: A couple of points, mate. First off, I dont have any chess strategy, wish I did, but I just play chess by the seat of my pants, which is why my game is so erratic. As for our netballers, for years they were slow learners, but finally the aussie girls taught them that being "Mr. Nice Guy" doesn't buy the frock a new baby. The trouble with showing someone exactly how to beat you, is the realisation of how deeply it hurts when they do so. Those Aussie girls have a long and brilliant record of success and they should rightly be proud of it. Now we seem to be embarking upon a new era where the Kiwis might reign supreme for a while. My bet is that it will take a team of Aussies to wrest the crown from their hands. :) Glad to hear you are having a good run here yourself.

3/27/2006 01:38:19 [ report this post ] | muppy matters strategic ...
Message: ... well now I am bound to share with you my sophisticated and complex game plan & strategy - I open with e4 and respond with c5 when my opponent does ..... sometimes when I am feeling particulary creative and experimental, I open with d4 .... after that, the ample seat of my pants drives me forwards and/or backwards ...... hope that helps - lol
|
muppyman
3/27/2006 02:51:09 [ report this post ] | peterf,
Message: I cant tell you how much I appreciate your help, so I wont bother. I have been known to open with e4 myself sometimes,("best by test" according to the Great One) But I have never opened with d4, and only once, decades ago across the board played the black side of a Sicilian, which I managed to win after a really hard tussle, only to be informed that I had unknowingly played into my opponent's favourite opening. No wonder it was difficult to win. I swear I would give up playing chess if it wasn't such exquisite fun. :))

Message: for reminding me of the forum...Sorry, guys & gals for the silence, but l've been busy and my game hasn't been too good lately :( ... Miscalculated and timed out on a game (I was losing it anyway) - I'm trying to make it up, but I'm getting hard match-ups...I thought Dok would be easier on me than Stinky, but noooo!
Anyway, good to see Muppyman and peterf around! A belated welcome to ekto !
Need to go to hunt some bounty !!

Message: Just won another game against gothicgirl, although this time, she prematurely resigned...Stinky, you should try playing her, she's tough but she'll vary openings on you! I also favor the Ruy Lopez although I do play variations of it, not by design though ;)

3/28/2006 19:23:04 [ report this post ] | Gothicgirl...
Message: A word of advice on strategy...Stinky's right, she plays tons of games simultaneously, so I'd look on her current games and if a lot of her opponents are online, she is known to make mistakes...Anyway, what's fun playing her is we cover 10 to 15 moves in one sitting, so games tend to be fast. The other big advantage is that she varies her openings and attacks, so you get a slew of positions to try. She also resigns early in a lost position - I've had a 12-3-2 streak against her...hope you guys get as lucky!

3/30/2006 02:56:07 [ report this post ] | I'm down 1-5
Message: against gothicgirl so don't match me against her. Actually anyone with such a roller-coaster ratings graph makes one think...that said I've been quiet on team games lately by playing my allocation in the tourneys, endeavouring to manage down my inflated rating by playing better opponents. Trouble is of course is that I always do my damndest to win and occasionally do so the whole process takes some time. I'll be asking for as many games as possible once I'm down to 1500, might take a year ;-), no roller-coaster crap for me. Might be rambling here, dunno, the wine is flowing freely. As to the netballers, I wish I had seen it, always such a pleasure to beat big brother. Now to the rugby, Waratahs look a threat but Crusaders all the way - I know that living in Wellington should mean I support the Hurricanes but a Cantab stays one-eyed for life ;-)
