jellon
The following team-mates are in challenges sent out but not yet accepted, I hope they too will have new games soon...

Must dash now, so much to do! I will check in again with you soon, in the meantime I know you'll keep battling for our battered pride. (I must say I will be supporting the Germans this evening, their style of play and resolution is to be admired in my opinion, and of the four teams still in the Cup, they seem to dive and cheat the least...)

Message: Greetings team-mates...
We're going through a rough patch again, and I am afraid three of our recent defeats have been by time-out. One of these has been cleared up, the player concerned contacted me and told me his computer was on the blink. The other two time-outs remain unexplained, and though I don't intend to do any 'naming & shaming' I will keep a close watch on the situation for a day or two.
I am at the end of a four hour stint online, mostly doing team admin, and in all that time not a single team has sent us a challenge. Team captains have a way of knowing which other captains are online to quickly accept challenges, so I am a bit disappointed. Never mind, I am off to bed now it's been a long week, but I will go into full challenge mode tomorrow evening.
Keep battling everyone, remember our character will show when times are not so good. I know you'll not let the team down. Regards, mercury_whyte

I think I just have to accept that summer is a quiet time for chess. Plenty of players away on holiday, others enjoying the weather etc. I did spend a fair while trying to drum up some challenges, and did secure a pair of new team games for the following players;
epwew
scorbin
jellon
sturoz
bonz
marxwax
However very few other captains were online this evening. Never mind, will post again soon. Until then best regards, mercury_whyte

Mostly thanks to 'The Sneaky Knight Connection', also to 'Aston Villa' and 'Belgian Whelps' teams. We're in that strange pre-season time now, when there's nothing but brainless TV and endless transfer stuff in the papers. I should take a holiday I suppose...took one about sixteen years ago, can't remember if I enjoyed it...

Sorry richfeet, I cannot accept your request, I have sent a private message with a more detailed explaination, no hard feelings I hope.
I'm afraid more time-out defeats have wiped out our positive score, meaning that after three months we are effectively back to square one. I hope you received my opinion poll message concerning the possibility of closing the team to new members, which may allow a time for stability and progress, while we get to know each other a bit better. Previously I have not been keen on the idea, but now my personal opinion on the question is neutral.
I look forward to hearing what you have to say on the matter, and I assure you all that if I have anything to do with it we will continue to work and we will overcome these difficulties.

Message: On the subject of admitting new players, maybe some sort of probationary period would work? Maybe set up a few games with team members of a similar rating and if these are completed without problem then let them in? 7/20/2006 15:29:26 [ report this post ] | NEW TEAM CAPTAIN!!!
Message: I'm putting myself forward, purely as a democratic exercise,
if elected i intend to shake things up a bit........as follows:-
1:- everyone with a score higher than mine will be asked to leave the team (nobody likes winners)
2:- all Everton fans (did i say ALL that denotes more than one) must sing you'll never walk alone each time they log on
3:- all team players must pay me £5 for each game i set up for them
NOW YOU HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE........... YOU DECIDE!!!!
please send your support and a £10 postal order to my private message board.
Now, as in all good elections, let us examine my opponents record...........
1:- have you seen his score? obviously spends all his time playing chess while in charge ( thats called john prescot syndrome in the trade)
2:-keeps all the team regulary topped up with games ( obviously this is a some sort of decoy he must be hiding something)
3:- has started a ''best players of the month'' table ( fostering team spirit i've known that to backfire ask j.mourinio)
4:- keeps all the team well informed through regular message posts ( its the power of the press all over again)
so there we have it, you decide, you either want a meglomaniac control freak or we can stick with the present encumbant.
That was a party political broadcast on behalf of the Monster Raving Checkmate Party.

7/23/2006 10:24:49 [ report this post ] | 23rd July update
Message: Greetings team mates!
I have taken a long time to read all the replies and ideas you sent me in response to my question concerning closing the team. Of the 50 English Defence players at the time, 19 responded, breaking down as follows;
16 - in favour
2 - against the idea
1 - happy to abide by whatever I decided.
I have to assume that the majority of those who did not reply are also OK with what I decide is best to do. Several players also commented that they felt the team had grown too large, a sentiment that some have held for quite some time. Therefore I have closed the team to new members for the present, with a view to reducing the number of players to 40.
This will happen over time as individual players may decide to leave, or may be removed due to breaking time-out rules or going absent for more than 50 days. Also this time without new players arriving will give me a chance to become more familiar with some of the newer names we do have onboard.
Another thing I have done is added some detail to my records of how many games team members have completed. From this time forward I will be limiting the number of games being played by any team member who has completed fewer than 20 games to 4 games (2 challenges). I know that there are some newer players already playing more than that number (4 out of 18 players who have completed fewer than 20 games), I will just be careful about allocation of games in all my future challenges. Of course over time this restriction will no longer be needed, as almost everyone will complete more games. I realise too that it is not impossible for a 'veteran' player to time-out, but it is much less likely.
Although the team is not accepting new members now as a default position, if anybody would like to 'vouch' for a friend or colleague, recommend that they join up, then we can always discuss it. I was recently contacted my an old ex-English Defender who expressed an interest in re-joining us (he used to be gibster19, but now has a new 'puter and a new log-on name). Please let me know what you think about this possibility...
It may seem to some that I am tinkering, or being something of a control freak. I accept that in the end, a fair bit of responsibility for the team doing well or badly largely comes down to the way I manage it. I would like us to carry on improving, get back to winning ways, because I enjoy my own chess more when we're going well together. Of course, comments are welcome, either here or by private message.
Changing the subject, thanks to the following teams for accepting my latest batch of challenges; The Knights who say Ni!, Aztecas, Colle's Camp and the Fighting Warriors. The following English Defenders have a pair of fresh games:
sb123456789
bernardhgaskin
anathema
markas
scorbin
bobhowe
stanc
duke69
elwoos
kallance
jellon
starkberlin
stellaknight
jcwhu
These are also all the players available for games under the new criteria, except for therealjimfriar and mercury_whyte (me). I have sent a challenge to one of the top rated GameKnot teams including both of us, and I am hoping for a positive reply.
(Once a player's rating gets above about 1900 it is very difficult to include them in most challenges, as such players are rare in most teams. I am doing what I can though...)
I am looking at this time as a time of renewal for us, a chance to refresh things a bit and find some stability. If things don't work out, there's nothing done that can't be undone. Keep battling everyone, I certainly will.
Best regards for now, mercury_whyte

That matter aside, we have been winning at least as many as we have lost. Well done to jellon in particular, six straight wins in the last week or so. Whatever you're on matey I want some! I am trying to get you some more games too, as you requested.

I have listed July's top scoring players at the top of our team page, leading the way this month is jellon, who has now strung 8 straight wins together, and possibly more as I have not begun checking August's results yet!
I have tried to supply new team games to those who were getting a bit low on them, please contact me if you feel like more games. Our timing-out team member has till not been back online, it has been nearly a week. I hope nothing serious has happened to him of course...

We have got off to a pretty good start this August, here is a list of English Defenders who currently merit a 'mention in dispatches'...
vulcan72 for a heroic run of FOUR straight wins in the previous week
kallance for winning four of his last six games to get off to a great start this month
marxwax for winning three out of four games in August so far...
jcwhu for the same achievement...
aidan_124 for a positive start of two wins out of three.
The following English Defenders have at least one pair of new games this evening;
sb123456789
marktb1961 Special mention, he has two difficult challenges against higher rated opposition
anathema
cooter
epwew
bernardhgaskin

jellon well played sir! A run of 9 straight team wins only just brought to an end.

He left messages apologising to his opponents, but I don't recall hearing from him myself. I have therefore removed him from the team. have also removed endernizerm, as I have again heard nothing following four time-out defeats in July.
sb123456789 has chosen to leave the team for reasons he did not choose to share. Perhaps he has gone to another team, though I'm not overly interested. Message: I'm Mark, 33, and I'm fairly new to the team, but I hope to be around for a while! I am a self-employed pub gaming machine supplier who never plays them, and my passions are for snowboarding (a bit tricky around lincolnshire tho, flat and never snows!) surfing, swimming and anything else that keeps me fit and healthy and of course chess, which I always loved but could never find anyone else who wanted to play until I found GK. I'm going have to put my life on hold for a while as my missus is expecting twins, but there'll always be time to sneak some games in. Also a big fan of the Arctic Monkeys if there's any other fans in the team, give us a shout!

Message: Greetings all!
I haven't posted for a while, been on a bit of a holiday. It's good to see some more messages going up here, and I am very happy with our progress these last couple of weeks, up into double figures! A hard fought achievement, well done to everyone who has contributed to it!
I will have some more challenges up within the next 24 hours, in the meantime I will contribute a little to our round of introductions...
Ian is the name I generally answer to, though I have always preferred my father's name David (my middle name...) I am a native of South East London though I have moved west following my job, which is a managament position in a small manufacturing company (one of the last half-dozen or so south of the Watford Gap). Gripping stuff so far, but hang on, there's more! I once ran the London Marathon and finished it, got a GLC medal to prove it. When not at work or playing chess I occasionally pen a few lines of a book I've been working on for about 15 years, ideally I'd like to retire in about 10 years and write full time. My online name 'Mercury Whyte' is a character from one of my unpublished works. Being born and raised within spitting distance of the Valley I am forever an Addicks fan, and have been very glad just to be in the top flight for a few years. Dowie is testing my patience a bit at the moment, but I know I've got to give him a chance.
Married, but only to my job. Ambition: to get through the rest of my life without making any more really stupid mistakes.
Be in touch again soon, keep battling everyone! Regards, mercury_whyte

Message: korvax, my longest running work is a trilogy following the fortunes of two families over a period of fifty years or so, from the near future to the not-so-near. Not exactly light reading, it covers World War III, the return of fascism in Europe and ultimately the evolution of an agrarian subsistance culture dominated by a post-apocalyptic religious order which denounces the Industrial Revolution and everything which flowed from it. (population explosion, urban sprawl, global exploitation of the natural world, weapons of mass destrution. etc). I guess this one might best be classified as a work of romantic fiction.
I was working on a political/science fiction thriller, something of a cross between 'Edge of Darkness' (I loved it, Bob Peck was brilliant) and 'Day of the Triffids' (a childhood favourite) involving a global conspiracy to dominate the world's food supplies using GM crops and 'terminator' (infertile) seeds. I must admit I haven't done much with this for about ten years, and the truth is probably stranger than my fiction by now.
Because of pressure of work, which has been increasing for about 12 years and doesn't show much sign of letting up in the near future, I spend very little time writing now. Fortunately it is something you don't have to be young to do, so I am looking forward to spending time on it during my (hopefully long) declining years.
