Message: Thank you for your posts and the advise on the time out issues. Eddie, Are you finding that it is the non-paying players that frequently time out? If that is the case, I agree with Eugene that we should keep the non-paying players to a minimum. Maybe, pick a % allowed and when a player asked to be on the team, you can explain the policy if we are at or above the % allowed.
Eddie, 3 days is plenty of time to make one single move. Just my opinion, but it seems that too much time is taken for many moves that seem the only possible move at the time. I can see certain moves taking 3 days to ponder but only at critical points of the game where many choices are available. Good chess.

Great post Jon thank you I have been recently recruting paid members to our team and leaving the non-paid open to higher rated players. I have removed one member that has timed-out about a month ago. He has also not played a game for a month. So I think he is gone There is one or two others that are coming close to being removed. Just for being gone for so long. I have taken All post in mind and thank you for all comments.

Message: I like the team and the way our Capt. goes about his business. Eddie, thank you for all of your hard work and thank you to all my teammates for your efforts. The best thing you can do is play to win and have fun doing it. Don't worry about the ratings and the other stuff. If you play your best and DO NOT time out, we will climb up the chart and when we get to the top, we will have our BIG hearts, friends who have had fun while learning and improving their skill in this greatest of games called chess.
Good chess.

Message: Hi Eugene! I think that's a great idea! I posted a while ago the suggestion that we should have a team website. A lot of the teams have them and I think it can only help. I have no expertise whatsoever when it comes to website building, so I asked the entire team if anyone had experience and could set one up, but no one responded.
Anyway, I don't have any .pdfs but hopefully some do and we can get the ball rolling.
Regards,
~Mark

Message: Depends on your style...
Do you enjoy defending like Tal?
Or Offense at all costs like Fischer
Or slowly crush an opponent like Karpov
Or love Rook and Pawn endgames as I do?
Once you figure out what YOU want from your game, will YOU select the best opening for you.
Message me for a few samples which might be safest for your rating if you wish to.

11/10/2006 10:36:07 [ report this post ] | Openings...
Message: syaz, if you haven't checked out: -> www.eudesign.com I recommend it. It might not necessarily help you choose an opening that is "best", but I found it useful in understanding openings move by move.
Eugene is right though, a "best" opening is different for everyone. I recently found that d4 as white was good for me, because it seems to me that it has the greatest variety of opening possibilities and I like possibilities. And since your opponent can look at your past game history on this site, they can analyze your tendencies in openings, so I like to keep it fresh and not by rote like I used to play (e4-e5, Nf3, etc...)
Same is true for me as black. I used to follow by rote the most popular opening here (e4) with e5, etc. and not only did that get me to play into my tendencies, but it also gave the possibility of white to play the King's Gambit, which I LOATHE! (I think 25-50% of my losses are against KG!) So now I play c5 against e4, again it seems to have more possibilities and no more KG, haha.
Anyway, I hope this is useful to you. And thank you for joining the forums! I am hoping more teamates follow you!
Regards and good chess,
~Mark

Message: As for myself...
Strictly 1 e4 player
And as Black:
1e4 c5 Gives me a lot of options also.
1d4 Nf6 Keeps the opening going towards a R+P ending where I am a real 2300 player.
1c5 e5 I like advancing in the center vs this one, to make the middle game dynamic
1Nf3 Currently I prefer d5 Haven't played vs it enough to make a set line.
1Nc3 d5 (1...Nf6 might lead to a drawish 4 Knights) scrambles the center
Mostly I look for alot of options as mcrachel does, I also look to spring a "Sleeping Move" such as ?... a5! Which looks like a waiting move but often seizes more space later. Or a line changing ?... h6, f6, a6, b6, etc These moves drive opponents crazy if done correctly. Usually they are ignored except they control a square. Mostly they screw up opponents analysis, and/or I wait to see his next move which usually trips open his plan. ALWAYS the reply to these sleepers aren't the best. Maybe because there is nothing new to analyze?!
Anyway... Openings are individual patterns into where you wish to enter an endgame.

11/13/2006 21:49:03 [ report this post ] | Mate in 1
Message: A simple position from an actual game played in the 1800's. It was said that when White played the move, coins were tossed upon the board after a pause as the Mate actually sunk in to the crowd. The loser, it was also reported never played as a House Champ again. A common practise in Europe was to have a "House Champ" who would play all challengers, he would receive a portion of the winnings from the owner of the establishment after each days matches.
That should suffice as to the story of the problem, as I know not any more.
It is White's turn.
White to Mate in 1 (On this move).
