Message:
Wow, it's great news! Is this our reopened [resurrected?] Club???!!!:)
I am very happy greyrabbit has overcome his problems and is back with us again. I agree -- this forum and our team will only be as good as WE make them. I volunteer my help in whatever needs to be done, but first we have to recount our ranks and see who can do what.
Re: greyrabbit's 8 proposals:
1. Time out = the boot... I agree, if it is due to negligence. But personal circumstances should also be taken into account...
2. How do I set my team games to a maximum? I just responded to any invitation so far...
3. Up till now, if i wanted new games, i just opened them or joined someone else's. Do I have to ask greyrabbit for new games?
4. irenehuls@aol.com
5. Should I cut and paste this link every time I need to get to the Club?
6. What are monthly bulletins about? Team games statistics?
7. Player of the month -- what are the criteria for that? The number of games played or the results?:)
8. I would like to thank pawnbyknight for his expertise, and Brer' Moose for his hearty welcome to the team!:)

Our Club back ;-))))))

Message:
Hopefully all the messages that has been put in the threads of club can be reinstalled, maybe also the members that it had.
If not I will gladly join this (new) club.
My recommendations are that Irenehuls, our latest teammember, should be part of this (third moderator with Zep and Baron?) so it is not only run by men..... ;-))))

My views on time-outs are very much the same as those of Irene.

Hope to see you all there soon again.
(good to have Charlie back again, he was replaces by Zep and Baron well.)

Hi team,

Message:
hope you don't mind Sean & Daniel's mum chipping in now and again, only the boys tend to play their games and not look at the club/team forums I will try to encourage them!, but with homework they sometimes have very little time.

just a few comments about greyrabbits proposals:-
Time out - the boot... I agree with Irene, before you boot out it would be good to see why the time out happened, I know my two try not to time out on any games, but in the summer one did on a team game and it was not his fault but mine :(
If the boys want new team games do you want them to post a message on this site or send a message via Gameknot direct to Greyrabbit?
e-mail address for both boys veronica.stevens1@ntlworld.com
I have saved this link to my favourites, but is there a link from the Gameknot site that will take us there?

Thanks guys....

Message:
Good to see a debate going on.

Ok answers so far....
1) Irene - no this isn't the resurrected club, this is just a forum.
2) Pawnbyknight - not sure whether that is possible but I will certainly enquire.
3) Pawnbyknight - you make a fair point about female representation, IF it turns out the club is one of the things the team wants I have no objection to Irene becoming the third moderator.
4) Irene - I believe the team games maximum is set under preferences.
5) Irene/S&Ds mum - only for team games, any others its up to you, would prefer a gk message to me....
6) Irene/S&Ds mum - you can get to this by clicking 'more options' 'forums' 'team forums' 'waskally wabbits', its often easier as you've done to add it to your favourites.....
7) Irene - The monthly bulletins were just that, saying how we got on in the month, current positions in team matches, announcements etc... N.B. if team members want this back what format? email? club forum? gk mail?
8) Irene - player of the month....open to suggestions.....

I'd also like to add a few points. I can see the timeout thing being contentious but I believe it has its place, like all the other proposals it is up for debate. Anyone connected with the team is welcome to have their say. And I'd also like to thank Zep and Baron again for keeping things running during my absence!

Thanks again for your posts, They are an important part of this teams development!

Cheers

Thanks for your answers, Greyrabbit!:)
But I still have some questions:
What does it entail, being a "team moderator"? I am not an expert in chess....
S&D mum Veronica seems to be interested in chess -- why don't we invite her to the club, too? The female representation would benefit...:)
7). I think a club forum format would be preferable to GK
8). I think Baron's claim to fame should be considered -- despite being wounded in battles, he still carries on and has an endless list of games... I think the player of the month should be chosen among people who contribute to the team most...

Further....

Message:
Yeah me too Steve, quite impressed!

Irene, the moderators serve a dual purpose. MOST importantly they are there to ensure that GK rules are adhered to. The clubs are bound by GK rules and thus aren't allowed certain things, i.e. swearing, excessive sexuality etc. Any club falling short of these standards can be shut down, permanently if so desired. Therefore moderators need to have at least an awareness of GK rules and behaviour policy although mostly its common sense.

Secondly they are there to guide discussions, i.e. to keep threads on track, they can also accept or reject new members, eject current members etc.

S&Ds mum would be welcome to join the club, but there is a problem there as there is for a few of our team. Currently clubs can ONLY accept premium members. What this means is that 'free' members don't get the benefit. Although I can see GKs point here, it does and would mean that such a club would be excluding some members of the team. Please rem that in this debate!

Cheers

4. Nxd4 Nf6
5. Nc3 g6

This is the dragonvariation of the Sicilian

6. Be3 Bg7
7. f3 O-O
8. Qd2 Nc6
9. Bc4 Bd7
10. O-O-O

After black's castling Kingside, white castles Queenside.
Now both black and white will start an attack on the castled king of the
opponent.

10... Qa5
11. Bb3 Rfc8
12. h4

Black hopes to do business with his rook on the half open C-file, but white launches an attack on the h-file by
pushing his pawn forward

12... Ne5
13. Kb1 Nc4

This is why white first moved his King to b1, so he can take the knight when it comes to c4} 14. Bxc4 Rxc4

15. Nb3 Qa6
16. e5

If black plays 16.dxe5 he loses after 17.Nc5 (a piece or a quality)

16... Ne8
17. h5

White plays for a win and pushes his h-pawn once again.

17... Be6

Black gets his bishop out off the d-file, where it was under attack

18. hxg6 hxg6
19. g4 Bxe5
20. Bd4

Now black has to make choices

20... Rxd4
21. Nxd4 Nc7
22. f4

And again it is a pawn that brings black into trouble,
white wants to give the knight for the bishop.

22... Bg7
23. Nxe6

Now black does not want the exchange of his black squared bishop, white takes
the other one

23... fxe6
24. f5

white is forcing his way with the last two pawns on the king side

24... Nb5

Black wants to trade knights, but white has other plans ........

25. Nd5

a sacrifice.... wow 25... exd5 26. Qxd5+ Kf8 27. fxg6 !!!!!!!!!!!!

25... gxf5
26.gxf5

White leaves his knight for the taking and thinks it is more important
the clear the g-file for his rook (Rdg1)

26... exd5
27. Rdg1 Na3+

Now white does not even want the knight

28. Kc1 Rc8
29. Rxg7+ black resigned (1-0)

Opinion on the proposals

Message:
First of all my apologies on the late response. I recently started university so I have very little time. I will try to check this thread more often, and try to read the whole thing, for which I don't have time at the moment either.

As for the proposals:
1) Booting people that have more than one time out seems like a good thing, depending on the reason. I can imagine that for personal reasons someone might not be able to play, so I'd say that shouldn't count.
3) Requesting games sounds like a good plan too.
4) goggeritt@gmail.com
5) Team club sounds good, although I wouldn't be able to join, since I'm not a premium member...
6) If monthly bulletins are to be posted, could you mail them to me as well?
7) Player of the month also sounds good, and it will help to get a better team spirit ;)
8) About coaching, when do you consider a player better than yourself? I know ratingwise I am at the top of the team, but I don't consider myself the top player...

I hope this contribution is enough for the moment. Hope to check back soon.

No problem mate,

Message:
better late than never!

You're right about the club, there is still no idea from GK if/when non premium members will be allowed to join.

When do you consider a player better than you, hmmmm..... I think there is a huge gap from 1400-1500. From personal experience and anal retentive record keeping there is a HUGE graduation in the percentage I get against sub 1400 and over 1400. Over 1500 forget about it! Unless like Farhad they are being kind! In addition to which I've played against you. Now there are those who beat me cos of my mistakes, there are those who beat me and I can see it coming after a tough game and there are those who beat me and I STILL can't work out how, guess which category you fall into!

How much of it is intuitive I don't know. Thats important as I realise it is very hard to teach intuition, but I think that most people 1600+ have something to offer by way of coaching. I do understand that it has to be fitted in around other considerations though.

Hello, greyrabbit!

Sometimes, things happen that can't be helped. I also believe that eveyone deserves a second chance. So I propose:

1st Timeout - Restrict number of team games allowed for 90 days.
2nd Timeout - No team games for 90 days.
3rd timeout - Booted from the team.

Timeouts will be counted by days, not games. For example, any games timed out in any one day will be counted as 1 timeout.

2, 3) maximum game limit set, will request team games soon.
4) Will PM my email address to the captain
5, 6) Miss the club, miss the bulletins even more. Would love to have them back again.
7) Player of the month sounds good, should motivate us all :)
8) Coaching could include general tips also, I'm sure the higher rated players in the team would have greater tactical and positional awareness that they might be able to share with us.

Maybe we can work out someling like Monkeyratdog gave as an option.
But, we have to look closely to the fact what caused these time-outs.
Last year I was rused to hospital, emergency, lost 18 games and amongst them there were 3 teamgames.
Besides these ones I have never had a time-out.

Message:
like the idea of the 1,2,& 3 chance option, however if a timeout happens then I think the player should contact the team captain with reasons why this occurred. You should consider personal and health reasons why this may have happened. If not careful you could end up losing a good team member.

with regards the coaching then I think this is a great idea for those who want to improve their play. Both my boys [S&D] seem to stay between 1300 -1400 and could do with some feedback to improve.

Yes to your first question, as pointed out by team members it would be unfair to consider it otherwise.

By using whatever criteria they deem to be important. Personally for me it would be a combination of overall results/spectacular results and general team spirit.

Hope this clarifies it a bit, but for the moment its all a bit subjective. I don't (as you can see) have a problem with publishing my criteria, I can't imagine any other selector having a problem with it either. So that may be an idea, to give reasons why a person has been selected.....

I think it's easy -- just compare the number and outcome of all games played by each team member in the last month and add it all up -- the three highest results belong to the top players.
Of course, individual contribution to the team spirit should also be rewarded, but the winner in this category should better be called the Top Teammate of the Month...:)

You can not speak of quantity when a player has 10 games going on, but in that particular month only completed two.
With 3 days per move one might make no more than 5 or 6 moves if all the time is used.
Still, difficult how to make a choice.
Maybe you give a spectacular increase in rating a thought, even if caused by non teamgames.
Would be easier if we had 50 members I guess, not having to worry who to vote after 3 or 4 months.

My suggestion

Message:
How about my suggestion of increase in rating in a month?
For instance, on the 1-st the month one of the people that make a recommendation of player of the month can note all the ratings of our team.
Simply from our teamlist.
At the end of the month these ratings can be compared to the ratings that the players had at the beginning of the month.
If a spectacular rating difference (at least 75 or 100 more) this could be something to take into consideration as a positive element for choosing him/her.

Veronica,
You could be right if I joined tourneys in which I am a higher rated player.
At least if I joined as a 1400 or 1500 player that would mean I probably go up 200 points. However in my case, I am rated over 1850, I have nothing to gain but lots to lose.
If I play someone rated 1450 I probably win 0,4 points (winning) and losing would cost me 20 points.
One day my rating might go up to 1900 but certainly not 2000 or more.
Spectacular rating increase can happen for your sons, yourself.
Only if I lose a lot of points first I might go up fast again.
