Hello and Games

Message:
Well two main things. I just wanted to say hello to all my new team mates. Second, I'd really like as many games as can be piled on me to help the team out. Also, can you start a team match if you are already over your max game limit? I'm at 9 games (max 7).

Hello

Message:
Hi Mark,
and welcome!

You can't start team games if they push you over you game limit- this means that you could get more team matches only after you'll have 5 games (or less)...

You should send Michael your preferences regarding team matches (if you have any)...

:)
Good luck,
Ariel

On a positive note: I've finally pulled myself out from the hole! score is 0, but it's a lot better than being negative, which I have been for a long time.

Also, Congrats to cheg1 and piedraros for their excellent scores of +4 in the month of December. They are our new MVPs!

Ladder

Message:
Mark, I'm not exactly sure what team ladder is. We are not yet part of it, but I think eventually we will be after we finish some recent games. It's kind of like league I think, where you move up if you win, and move down if you lose.

And the yahoo site looks very promising, thanks cheg1!

Back

Message:
Hi all,

I left the team a couple of weeks ago, because I didn't felt like we're a team anymore. We haven't had any team activity for quite a while, and it felt like we only care about who is MVP. I was also disapointed that no one congratulated me on getting married (it was a month and 2 days ago), but I guessed that ppl just missed that post.

Anyways, now I'm back, since leaving is not the way to deal with things .(I kinda lost my temper, but I'm over it). Thanks Michael for having me back.
I've suggested some activities to Michael, that will enhance the team experience, like having a team mini-tournament with an initial poistion. This kind of mini could allow us learning an initial position together, and we could also talk about our mistakes in general. I'm willing to try and analyze (finished) games with anyone who wants to- seeing our mistakes (sometimes) helps us not doing them again.
Playing one against each-other will also allow us to know each-other better.
We can also play unrated games between ourselves just for fun.
I can try helping anyone who wants to try improve his/her gameplay, so if you're interested send me a private message.

Does anyone wants to take upon him/herself to organize minis for the team?
(I can't since I'm not a "premium subscriber")
It could be nice if we had them on a regular basis.

Here to stay,
Ariel

Message:
Gur-arie.

I can take care of the organization of the minitourney. I would do as a minitorney with invitation only.

Please let me know what the opening you want to use is.

Please, all those players interested in participating, send me a messege or let us know here. I will start it as soon as i find at least 5 participants. I suppose me and gur_arie are the first two.

Message:
sorry, i miss that little bit. but try I JUST GOT MARRIED!! WOOHOO!! NOW I'M PAYING MORE ATTENTION TO MY GAMES!! NOT!!

there is no efficient way to communicate. i've tried to set up a group game via geocities, but that ended in a bust. some things are simplified by being able to display a board. but where to discuss? it isn't exactly on topic.

i've thought of an idea. howabout we have one game of two players who each mitigate a group of supporters. The supporters pm move ideas, but the final decision is the players'. Perhaps more clearly stated, a player can ask for advice, or a supporter can suggest ideas. this should be unrated, of course...

Message:
Maybe I should have posted a more noticable message (regarding my marriage) :)

I remember the group game idea. Let's try it out... Anyone wanna play that game? I'd be happy to play against you Zhnkiu... with a group of supporters ;)
We can call this "the champion's game"- since each group chooses its champion, and support his/her moves with ideas. (We should probably make this a game with a long time per move time control, to allow enough time for ppl to get involved).

Mauricio (piedraros), as soon as I finish my mini I'd be happy to join... :S
Can you start a mini with invitation only, and whenever a team-mate wants to join he/she'll contact you for an invitation? (So that when I'll finish the mini I'm currenty participating in, I could join)
As for an initial position- how about the "scotch game"?
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. d4 exd4
4. Nxd4

Message:
I have started the Minitourney. However, the only players who have expressed their interest cannot be invited.

Cheg1. please try to finish a Minitourney soon.... (I manage to do that asking some of the players to resign or resigning myself when there was no chance to win)
Gur_arie... you have too many games....

So please everybody, please let me know when I can invite you to the minitourney

Initial position is Queen's Gambit as suggested by cheg1.

Sorry for that Gur-arie but Cheg1's suggestion came up first (via personal message).

HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU!!!

well,

Message:
better than examining our navels, here's a little advice for those seeking guidance...

-- don't castle automatically in the sicilian. keeping the king in the middle is fine. for one, white likes to storm kingside. two, black can accept an exchange BxNf6, gxf6, to open a dangerous open lane (like on a castled king). and this gets you out of a lot of trouble with the backward pawn on d7.

-- but castle before it's too late. my lucky win recently against jingbudda, an 1850 player, in 20 moves was directly due to his being too slow to develope kingside while leaving his queenside wide open. (a series of small inaccuracies helps too)

-- if you're not paying attention and play hardheaded, you've already lost. so wake up and take a careful look at the board. (sorry if my tact is poor in saying this) confusion is not an issue of the board position, but of your own mind. train yourself to handle hard problems with mental excersize. solving one Grandmaster level puzzle is worth thirty easy throwaways.

Sacrifices

Message:
I'm reading a very good book (in french : comment devenir un super attaquant ; How to become a super offensive player), dealing with sacrifices (lots of very good games from Tal, Lasker, Kasparov,...) and lots of good advices.

Some ideas that saved some of my games :
- consider the sacrifices ! if you don't want to loose material, you won't sacrifice, but you loose some nice attacks
- consider all the checks, even if it looses material, and look if you can win something better
- in an exchange, don't systematically retake the piece. From time to time, a better move is playable.
- pinned pieces can sometimes move (see the example of Legal's mate)
