Message: ...for creating the #2 thread!
Eugene told me the answer to the puzzle last week. It was driving me crazy, so I think he took pity on me and told me ; - )
I was just glad to know that I wasn't a complete idiot for not figuring it out ; - D
For those of you that haven't seen the answer and still want to try and figure it out, a hint is: know your chess history
Glad to see the forums are picking up more activity! Thanks everyone! And thanks again Eugene for generating excitement with the chess puzzles! My prediction is that with the increase in forum activity and hits on our new site, that our team rating will increase too! : - )
Regards,
~Mark

Message: I would like to thank everyone who has mentioned items of interest. The more that are mentioned, the more there will be.
I thoroughly enjoyed the responses to the puzzles, I admit they weren't common puzzles. Be on your toes, you never know when one of those will pop up again. I will be adding a Mate in 1, and a Mate in 2 Tuesday here in this forum, so stay tuned.
Does anyone have a LEGITIMATE underpromotion to share with us. As far as my notes go, I have 2 Knight promotions. Has anyone ever castled for mate? I accomplished this once in 1967 at the young age of 8 years old - and have never duplicated it. I once had 3 Knights on the board at the same time - I under promoted to a Knight thinking he would just capture it anyway, well he was indifferent to it, the game finished with the 3 Knights on the board.
Anyone else have something unusual to share?

Message: After, 34. ...Rd8
I just figured to promote and Black would capture the Queen. So without much thought I pushed 35. f8//N !?
Black responded with 35. ... Kb7 !?
And then, when you are presented with a free piece you go through the regular happy, joy, joy thoughts... then reality sets in, that you have absolutely no experience with 3 active Knights. There is only 2 per side in the box to start the game. First thing we did was to take a captured White Rook and place a pawn on it and declare it a Knight. Then the fun really started. Black realized he had nothing better than move his Rook from White sq to White sq. I had to invent something that resembles an attack. Well with our collective ignorance in such positions we both, as you can imagine, just made polite moves until one of us went wrong. I take no claim for great play but here is the finish:
36. Nge5 Ra8, 37. Nfd7 Rg8, 38. Nf3 Ra8, 39. Nxd4 Bh6, 40. Bd6 Rg8, 41. N3c5+ Ka7, 42. Nc6+ Ka8, 43. Nb6++ Final Position:

Message: start with 'fen="' then use numbers to represent empty sqares and capitals for white pieces and normal for black, use the letter.
e.g a white knight on e4 would be fen=8884n3888, a black king on h1 is fen=88888887K
Begin in top left, for counting. o.k?

Message: I shall be posting a paper on how to install FENs for those who need it, on the website. It is scheduled for the first of the year with a program to make it real easy.
Until then:
hozat was almost correct; a White Knight on e4 would be:
8/8/8/8/4N3/8/8/8/
A Black King on h1:
8/8/8/8/8/8/8/7k
Starting at a8 to h8/a7 to h7/ etc until you reach h1
#s represent EMPTY sqs.
Capital letters = WHITE pieces
Lower case letters = black pieces.
The very interesting problem by hozat would be:
8/8/8/4k3/8/8/8/RRN4K/
A Little confusing, but there it is.

Last moves were:

28. Bd4-e3+ Ra2-d2
29. Qg8-c4+ Bb1-c2
Arrives at this unusual position...
White to Mate in 1.

11/28/2006 00:10:33 [ report this post ] | My website game
Message:
The analysis of my game on the website vs. surnight as black has the comment that instead of 22. Rd7, 22. e6 is somehow quicker. However, I looked at that move during the game and dismissed it because 22. .. Nxe6 seemed like too good of a response. I open up my bishop's diagonal to pressure g7, but then the knight defends g7. Besides, the black knight at c7 was blocking the rook from coming to c7 and defending f7; so why would I want it to move? After Rd7, the rook is pressuring the knight at c7, the pawns at f7 and g7, and the potential mating square h7.
Btw, there is a mate in 6 here starting with move 26, but there are 8 different lines (the one listed is the longest). I know, because I put them in as conditional moves.

Message: 1. Ka5 !!! With the threat of 2. Ne2#
Some trys would be:
1. ... Qxf2, 2. Nf5#
1. ... Qxe5+, 2. Nb5#
1. ... Rxd4, 2. Nd3#
1. ... Qxd4, 2. Rxd4#
That was a tough first move to spot. With all the firepower poised to strike it was tough to bother with a King move first.

Message: I have been playing chess for OVER 40 years, and have (so far) 3,420 notated games. I have played against opponents from over 30 countries, rated as high as 2650. I have taught Chess at 17 schools from Middle School to College and in the Military. In short, I know a little about chess.
I can honestly say that I have just made one of my 100 best moves ever; in one of our team games.
My opponent "atis" is stronger than his rating, and had a strong passed pawn and material advantage for his King position and undeveloped Kingside. Can you spot the stunning move which forces his immediate resignation?
The game is: -> gameknot.com
I shall offer analysis of the game on our website next week.
