[ report this post ] | IT'S A KNOCKOUT .......
Message:
Due to some skilful negotiation and rapid delegation by the Team Captain, I have been given the task of acting as TD for our 7th GBH Team tournament.
This one will take a very different format from the traditional inter team events and is designed to provide a slightly less serious event, and a significantly less onerous commitment from participants.
We have also introduced a few " local " rules which are designed to make the games as even as possible and enhance the prospects of the lower rated players -we hope this will further strengthen the camaderie which already exists within our team.
An outline of the tournament rules follows - please feel free to contact me if you need any of them defined in more detail. Please note that the seeded draw will be posted (New Year celebrations permitting) on January 2nd.
GBH 7th team Tournament playing rules :
1. The knockout event will require members to play only one game at a time.
2. The seedings for the draw (1 - 40) will be based on individual's ratings as of Jan 1st 2007. If a member decides not to participate, they will simply need to forfeit the game when announced and the opponent will win by default. We want to keep this to a minimum so we hope that EVERYONE will take part in this somewhat more light hearted event to get our new year started.
3. The top 8 ranked players will receive byes for rounds 1 and 2, and this means the early rounds will be as evenly matched as possible.
4. The lower rated player will have the choice of colour and will issue the challenge to the higher rated player. All games will be 5 days per move and unrated. Once the game begins, the lower rated player will report the game number to the tournament director and when the game is over, the lower rated player will report the results to the tournament director.
5. Up until the quarter finals onwards (round 4), a draw will result in a "victory" for the lower rated player. If a draw results in the finals, (ie quarter finals and semi finals) another game will be played with colours reversed until a result is achieved.
6. The final will be a best of three event - in the case of a tie, the lower rated player will be declared the winner.

I can assure you that special problem #1 DOES have a mate in 2 solution. It requires more logic than a "normal" chess problem to solve, but it can be done. Very tricky. Keep trying.

I agree with you olean_don , the only way for mate in two is with en passant (not sure about the spelling) and then whites move is unimportant, followed by checkmate with what ever pawn you used to capture.

olean_don, you are correct. This puzzle involves a genre of chess puzzles called backsolving. In order to solve the puzzle, one must go back and figure out what White's last move was. In this case, the a or g pawns could not have moved last as they are on their starting square. The d-pawn was locked on its current square and the king could not have moved last because it has no legal square it could have moved from. The c or e pawn could not have been on the third rank as Black would have been in check with White to move. Therefore the only legal last moves for white were c2-c4 or e2-e4. After either move, Black captured e.p. and checkmate next move.

GBH 7th team Tournament playing rules :
1. The knockout event will require members to play only one game at a time.
2. The seedings for the draw (1 - 40) will be based on individual's ratings as of Jan 1st 2007. If a member decides not to participate, they will simply need to forfeit the game when announced and the opponent will win by default. We want to keep this to a minimum so we hope that EVERYONE will take part in this somewhat more light hearted event to get our new year started.
3. The top 8 ranked players will receive byes for rounds 1 and 2, and this means the early rounds will be as evenly matched as possible.
4. The lower rated player will have the choice of colour and will issue the challenge to the higher rated player. All games will be 5 days per move and unrated. Once the game begins, the lower rated player will report the game number to the tournament director and when the game is over, the lower rated player will report the results to the tournament director.
5. Up until the quarter finals onwards (round 4), a draw will result in a "victory" for the lower rated player. If a draw results in the finals, (ie quarter finals and semi finals) another game will be played with colours reversed until a result is achieved.
6. The final will be a best of three event - in the case of a tie, the lower rated player will be declared the winner.

Hope '07 is a "bountiful" year for all. I started it out with a WIN and a DRAW in two team matches against tag1153, the Captain of Southern Chess. They were hard fought and involved some serious end game strategy. Check 'em out...game of the week on the WIN???
