Message: Happy New Year to all
As the person who is still propping up the table I would appreciate some general advice for a specific game I am playing. This game is against someone considerably higher rated than me which meant that from the outset anything better than complete humiliation feels like a win.
At the moment I am a knight and a pawn up (which stuns me - I think he made a mistake). I can now see a move which (I think, assuming I have calculated correctly!!) takes me to only 2 pawns up but means that he has doubled pawns and a strong possibility of me gaining another pawn. This will leave a rook and a knight each and quite a few pawns (for me at least, assuming it goes according to plan).
My question is, does it sound reasonable to go for this (which makes me optimistic of a draw or better) or should I try to stick with being a knight ahead where I think there is more chance of a loss as we both will have queen, two rooks and at least one knight each?
Are there any broad guidelines for this sort of situation that I may be able to apply to increase my conidence in either option?
Many thanks
steve

Message: I've been looking at other peoples games, particulalry where there is quite a difference between ratings. So this game board #6397278 is not mine but is a good example - I picked this because I am playing one of the people who is playing this game.
When looking at this game - to me the higher ranked player seemed to miss a few moves that I would expect him to notice, one being 39 .. Rxh3+ - this seems a much better move to me than the one played. Am I missing something major here?
thanks

Message: Greetings tream-mates...
Sorry this is a bit of a late response to your question elwoos but I do believe it was general enough not to be deemed an infraction of the rules. korvax is right to be cautious on this subject and said what he thought for the good of the team, which I do appreciate. I am satisfied that no rule was broken, or even bent for that matter. Should anybody from inside or outside this team wish to debate the matter however I am more than happy to do so.
(Personally, I would be inclined to keep my knight advantage, but that is said without knowing all the dynamics of the position of course...)
There are a few new games for some English Defenders this evening, I will try to rustle up more on or before the weekend. I realise also that I have not posted December 2006's top scoring players list yet! Hopefully this too will materialise by next Monday.
Regards for now, keep battling everyone...

Message: Greetings team-mates!
Firstly I'd like to welcome gomicky to the English Defence team, I will be arranging some games for him as soon as I can. A few challenges have been sent and received, but it is a bit slow to get going this year, I hope you'll be patient with me chaps...
One more thing, trevormilner has asked to leave the team for the moment, for personal reasons. In accordance with his wishes I have removed him from the team, but I hope he will be able to rejoin us at some time in the future. I'm sure we all wish him well.
Will be in touch again soon, keep battling everyone until then...

Message: I won!
The game in question is board #6401439 and the move I wasn't sure about was my move 17. This is the highest ranked player I have ever won a game against by quite some margin (previous highest was 1602 I think) so my confidence is up, all I need to do now is work out how to apply it to my team games.
If anyone has any comments/constructive criticism of the above game I would be interested. Please bear in mind that it is from a tournament where the first move is Black's move 4

Message: Greetings team-mates!
Apologies for not posting for a while, a combination of reasons; I prepared a message to mpost two days ago, and when I clicked to post it my puter froze and all was lost (grrr). Also I must admit a promotion at work has made me busier than ever...
Well done epwew, and a very cute finish bernardhgaskin, your opponent is was probably a little red-faced over that one! Reminds me a bit of an outrageous check-mate I almost pulled off once with my King and one pawn, while my opponent's own pieces were blocking escape squares. He spotted it when I was one move away though...
I did get some challenges in a couple of days ago, I will try to get more games ASAP. By the way, I haven't welcomed gomicky to the team yet, so 'Greetings gomicky'! I hope he will do well for us. The December top scoring players list was a bit short but I notice we are picking up wins now, so January's should be rather better!

Message: Greetings team-mates!
I am in the middle of arranging challenges as I type, I know a lot of you are getting pretty low on games. I haven't been around much lately but I will try to give this team all the attention it deserves from now on...
The January top scoring players list looks a lot more impressive, many English Defenders made it on, so well done to them! I have begun to lose track of how many previous times players have been featured on the list so I have dropped that ( + + + ) feature, replacing it with a 'Mentioned in Dispatches' section, as recognition of those English Defenders who get through several games in any given month but just miss out on a positive score. Your efforts are now acknowledged gentlemen...
Our ELO average and team score are creeping in the right direction, and we have one more new player to welcome aboard, I hope eddy3oy will do well for us in the future...
Signing off for now, I will keep trying to load on the challenges between now and the weekend, your continued patience is much appreciated...

Message: Greetings team mates...
I owe you all two apologies;
1) I know I haven't posted any news or messages for more than a fortnight, this month at work has been very stressful and difficult, and has taken up much of my time. I have tried to keep the challenges coming in, and I have seen that the team has done itself proud on that count, almost back into a positive score during the past few weeks. More new games will follow this weekend, and I repeat that I don't mind anybody contacting me if they are waiting a long time for new games, I'll do my best to focus on their requirements...
2) Today I accidentally timed-out a game against dels. It was going to happen to me sooner or later the way things have been, but I am sorry. A lot of time went into that game, and it cancels out a game I won only last week. No excuses, I have been inattentive.
Regards for now, will post again soon, hopefully with better things to impart

Message: I've just noticed that GK has it's own opening database. Does anybody on the team use this? It looks like it could prove very useful. I would prefer not to, but if your opponents are using it, it seems they're going to have an edge over you and unless you refer to it you won't get an equal game. just interested to see how many use databases...I can't memorise all those openings, can anyone else? guess I'll have to play some face to face games to be sure.

( generally i cannt remember standard openings... i just try to use theory.... i find this helps in unusual openings)

Message: I agree it does seem unfair, but if you check out the FAQ 21 "what is considered cheating?" - "Chess books and game/move databases are allowed (as they are permitted in correspondence chess too)." Although I don't want to use it, I'd rather play the same way as real life chess, but why should we be handicapped if others are using it?
It's nearly the same as using chess opening theory really, especially the 1900+ games, you can see which moves work well, proving the theories.
If you're a premium subscriber, you can access a personal database as well, useful for seeing which openings work for you, or not.
by the way good luck with retrieving that queen Rolfe, guess the dog won that game then!

Message: Greetings team-mates!
I have been having a few connection problems recently, but my broadband is almost sorted out. I managed a flurry of new challenges three or four days ago, sorry bernardhgaskin and everyone else who has been left very short of games recently! Once my BB is running properly it should be a lot easier for me to keep everyone supplied with all the games they need.
Not sure about that rating question jcwhu, I have heard there are ways to manipulate the ratings...maybe somebody else can shed light on that one.
The team is performing pretty well despite my difficulties, well done to all successful English Defenders in March, I have finally posted our team stats for that month at the top of our page. cooter came out a clear leader, six straight wins and not a defeat in sight. Inspiration to us all, but don't lose heart if things are going against you, There's always another game round the corner...

Message: Agreed !! it is very quite on here these days.
1. Why do people hide their online status ? I've heard somebody say that they are always online but not always at their computer so the online status is meaningless. But is this true for everyone ? do some opponents think they gain an advantage by hiding their online status
2. How many games have you lost making a blunder, when you like to take your time studying a position, in say a 3 day move game, only to be "bullied" into making a move because your opponent has made a number of conditional moves.
3. I Agree with "King Arthur" (aka VULC rating 1066) There weren't many cross of St. George flags flying around my end on Monday. I think it needs to be made a bank holiday.
4. Footy..... I'm not going to comment on the recent games (bite your lip stanc). But the loss of Bally today is very sad. Youngest player in the 1966 world cup winning side and MOM as well. God Rest !!
5. Anybody interested in an Isle of Wight tourney this summer. An opportunity to meet team members, a few games of chess/ beers on the beach over a weekend in July or August...

Message: Greetings all...
Our team score has taken a battering this week, but I have looked over recent results and only two defeats were time-outs. Just a run of bad form I suppose, pity, we were going pretty well up until then. I have belatedly updated the figures at the top of our team page to show April's performance statistics, and I am sending out challenges this evening, so hopefully a few new games will follow.
COME ON LIVERPOOL!
There are always a few teams whose results I tend to look for, because I admire their attitude to the game, and wish perhaps that the team I support could be more like them. Unfortunately one of those teams (who shall remain nameless - no they won't, to hell with it: WEST HAM) has now been permanently scrubbed from this list. Never mind, as a neutral when it comes football clubs outside London I'll be happy if Liverpool bring the European Cup back to Blighty...
