bad etiquette?

Message:
just wondered if its bad form, to ask not to be paired up in a team game, with a player from another team?

the reason i ask is, that a player i formally played in a team game, demanded a re-match and stated ''you got lucky''. I resisted telling him that i'd ''got lucky'' twice as i beat him in both games............

the player in question has organised another team game and we have been paired up again, I'm just worried if i beat him again will the challenges stop, or will he take the hint that being lucky, is sometimes better than being talented..........

while I'm on, just incase i forget HAPPY CHRISTMAS to everyone in the team and all the best for 2008

3rd February update

Message:
Greetings team-mates!
~
I know it's been about ten years since my last message, so here's hoping you and your various offspring are well and have populated many new lands since last we spoke. I have updated the stats at the top of our team page to include December and January figures (very good December, so-so January, just like real life).
~
Very sorry to hear that vulcan72 had to leave the team for now, I hope he sorts out whatever troubles are weighing upon him and returns to us some time in the near future...
~
We are down to 35 team members right now, so I have opened the team once again, so if anybody knows of anyone who'd like to join up, please give them a shout. Usual rules apply of course...
~
Just for a bit of fun I have set up several mini-tournaments and invited everyone in our team (who was available at 6am Sunday 3rd Feb) to join me in one or another of them. No tournament points, just a chance to have a few friendly games, try out a few things, make a few comments etc. I hope these invitations can be accepted by most of you loyal chaps...
~
Apologies to bernardhgaskin, who is still asking for my comments on a game we played recently. I will have something for you soon, honest! I realise it's probably too late to be of much use, but they'll be putting that on my headstone one day. Some things never change...
~
Are you still waiting for new team games calmrolfe? Each time I send or accept challenges, GK is marking you as not available to play right now. Are your time preferences and maximum game preferences set the way you want them? If they are, I may have to contact the site, as something may have gone wrong...
~
I'll try to remember only to include you in 3 day games from now on stanc, have you set your time preferences to 3 days only? That really helps me, prevents my wandering mind from making mistakes...
~
Keep battling everyone, and please send me a message if you're getting short of games! I look forward to swapping a few pieces with you in our mini-tournaments...
~
Best regards, mercury_whyte

Hi guys!

It is a rare occasion when I get any time to myself at all these days...what with 2 young children and work...sigh

My two lads (james 11+ joseph 9) play for a childrens chess club. Last week was the annual tournament....Everyone played together, although there was an u12's and an U18 section. The final round saw them both pitted against each other....the Joe one won....*winning a mobile phone and a trophy).....the James came second.....

Interestingly Joseph came third in his own right in the U18's as well!

Looks like I soon won't be able to beat them! ..........groan

Time preferences

Message:
Skipper, I've set my max time preference to 3 days now. Normally when you play longer games your opponent will move within a day or so. It wasn't meant as a pop at you Skip for giving me longer max limit days per move games....It's just that this guy is taking every move up to the limit which in my experience is not normal.
Just got back from an accent top up trip to The Wirral. I had to endure the liverpool v Sunderland game in the local pub. The only consolation was that the local reds weren't happy with the performance. I've got a feeling the support for Benny Tez is cracking.. Is there anybody who can explain to me what is offside these days (Open to all genders) AJ goal against Blackburn was good for me, but I would say that. Bolton are still too good to go down in my opinion calmrolfe or should I say there are more than 2 teams worse than you in the prem.
Well done to the nippers therealjimfriar great news !! sounds like you'll be having a strong mini tourney going on in your house soon :)

16th March update

Message:
Lordy! in these uncertain times work has gone absolutely crazy. I have about 50 new things to look after as well as all the old ones, and frankly I'm not getting any younger. That work/life balance thing is truly a cruel wind-up...
~
I always seem to be apologising to you all, and here I am doing it again. It has been too long since I got in a decent number of challenges and being the very tolerant bunch you are, you have put up with my absence with virtually no complaint. I am sorry my neglect of stanc's games got to the point where he felt he had to leave, such is life I suppose. On a brighter note I have invited geordy borncrazy to join us, and I have accepted onboard our first new member for quite a while, lfc5times (I think he's a Liverpool fan), a fiercely patriotic new colleague to strengthen our ranks. Some of you will have a chance to chat to him 'over the board' so to speak, as he is in one of our mini-tournaments too...
~
bernardhgaskin that was some time you must have had, just brilliant stuff. My good work mate tkdman will be green with envy, it is his avowed aim to become the finest chess player on the planet (never set your sights too low!), and he would have loved the opportunity to have been there.

I will post again soon, and update the stats as well. I'll have a look at who is very low on games and try to bump them up...

26th April update

Message:
Greetings team-mates...
~
Firstly, my profoundest thanks to tkdman for doing so much work over the past few weeks to help keep our team running. He has arranged and accepted challenges, done his best to keep everybody busy, accepted new members into the team, first class work which I truly appreciate.
We both work for the same company, and recently changes within the firm and changes in the marketplace have made increasing demands upon our time. tkdman works just as hard as I do and he has to travel a long way, but he has a passion for the game and a drive to achieve ever better personal standards which I can only envy. While my personal rating has slipped and my mind has not been well focussed, he has pushed onwards, always improving.
~
Secondly, many thanks to charleshiggie the captain of the 'England' team, who arranged several St George's Day challenges with us. I know those English Defenders who were lucky enough to be included will do their best to win for the team, and whatever the outcome, English Chess here will be the winner. With the help of tkdman I will do what I can to keep more new games coming...
~
Thirdly, among our clutch of new English Defenders it is good to see an old hand returning, welcome back vulcan72, and many congratulations to starkberlin on his marriage! I second that wish for a long and happy life for the newlyweds. Sorry about stanc, he was getting low on games when I was struggling to find time to manage the team and he went his own way. Perhaps he was pining for his old sparring partner just a little as well...
~
Fourthly, I will be updating the stats shortly, so we can all mull over our slow decline and think fondly of those heady days when I was propping up the table with a personal score of about -25, but the team score briefly touched +100. Remember that? What the ?@^& happened?
~
Best regards to all for now, keep battling... mercury_whyte

Hi all,

Well, I've won my last 10 team games. Maybe something to do with getting married? Don't have anything else to do now!

About the lack of postings. May I suggest that the advantage of playing in a team may lie with the possibilility of getting some feedback on past performance. Without this, a team game is like any other.

Perhaps the Captains could give us some pointers.

What do you think?

An outstanding performance was registered in the Friar family. The two brothers from Bewdley attend Worcester Junior Chess Academy coached by English Chess Federation Coach Andy Moore. Both Joseph in the under-9s, and James in the under-11 boys got clean sweeps with 6 wins out of 6 games to win their Worcestershire Supremo titles.
