The Amateur's Mind

Message:
In addition to Eddie's rec, my all-time fav is The Amateur's Mind by Jeremy Silman. Here's a review I wrote for it in the chess books section of GK:

"The best instructional chess book I have ever read. Silman teaches by going through, in detail, actual games of his students. There is something to be learned by the mistakes of the 700 rated player, the 1700, and the 2700. Not only will this improve your game, but it's also actually fun to read, unlike every other instructional chess book. Silman never hesitates to slam a student who makes a bonehead move, at which time you can't help laughing out loud while reading. This is not to say that Silman exploits his students, rather the opposite, teaching through constructive criticism. Actually, it made me wish he were my chess coach.

One note: Many of the instructive games are in annotated form, so having a chess board (ideally one with a-h/1-8 for those of us who are slow) while you read, is most helpful. _MR"

Opening Database

Message:
If anyone is interested in using a good database to help you through a theoretical opening, try Scid. Go to Google and type in those letters. It's a free download and you can follow a line up to as much as 20 moves. Caution tho: once the db quits giving suggestions, you're on your own.

my veiws on books

Message:
i have red allot fo chess books some help some don't but the biggest help i have noticed si to replay you're own games over and over to see what move(s) cost you or ur rival big. look at those moves and think better ones. do any of u go to chess clubs? if so do what i do, play everyone at the club once those who beat u study them and beat them, no matter how long it takes.

I went to a club and a friend of mine smoked me, about 7 months later i made him resign in 21 moves i felt so proud of myself, now we trade games back and forth but they are always fights to the death.

This just proves that the best help in chess is Chess. once again i thx eddie for this forum set-up and i will be posting as much as i can.

Chessbooks, etc

Message:
When I first took up serious chess in the 60's, all there were was books, magazines, and other printed matter. After I returned from a 15 year sabbatical in 2005, I was amazed at all the databases and chess engines there were available. The sheer number of new (young) Gransmasters is unbelievable. I doubt if we would have seen those in the days of Fischer, Botvinnik, Reshevsky or Tigran Petrosian. They all earned their titles the hard way; endless study and theoretical comprehension. Those methods are still available, but now one can crosscheck them against Fritz, Rybka, Crafty, etc. Is chess any easier? You answer that.

is chess easier?

Message:
i actually think now its more complictaed, there are so many people playing so many different openings,mid-games, and end games that to find ur own style is alomst impossible. I say to take an opening you like and play it until you lose, then see what beat you. I am a practical chess player i hardly ever stay in the books. If i am playing a master i try to get out of the book as soon as possible, when people think they mess up. You give a master too many problems and a few good moves and he will be streesed on attacking or defending his king so much he'll slip, now i am not saying this always works its just my veiw.

I understand that with all the info chess can be easier yes, but sooo much info can clog it and make it extremely complicated.

Openings...

Message:
What I've heard/read from the experts regarding openings is that players are over-reliant on them. What happens is that players will memorize an opening and get used to defenses against them. But then an opponent will make an unusual move early on in the match, which will totally throw the opening-by-rote player and they'll be at a loss of what to do. At least in correspondence chess, one has 2+ days to figure out a response, but in OTB games (and especially in timed tourneys), where you don't have the luxury of looking anything up online, one can get really thrown. A GK friend of mine always opens as white with 1. Nf3. He says in OTB games (and especially in tourneys), players will sometimes spend up to 5 minutes trying to figure out how to respond as black, obviously having their memorized white pawn openings thrown for a loop.

Openings

Message:
That very thing has happened to me several times. With a normal G/90, you have time to try to recall a "best" reply, but where it gets tough is at G/60 or faster. I usually resort to basic chess teachings: development, control of the center, castle early, etc. Even that does not always work but at least you don't get crushed in 12 moves. With 1. e4, I try to work up something in all basic replies, but occasionally I run across something like 1. e4...b6.

Subject Matter

Message:
For a variety of reasons (work, uninterested, etc) a lot of people won't get involved in forums. It's something like trying to start a conversation with your opponent during a game: Some will never respond. Perhaps open a discussion about team play in chess, favorite openings. I asked about a team match using a thematic format. One of my opponents is a Navajo Indian, so i asked him if he saw "Windtalkers." Starting a conversation is difficult for some people and impossible for others. Right now, it just seems to be U & I.

hmm well nothing aganist getting sick but i have a had a nasal problem and a cold since um august of last year, its my yearly, i get it until like march, every year no fail. i hate to say this but i am totally against hospitals and all the work that you do. Doctors are the best scam artist in the world. i am a walking medical miracle. i should according to the doctors have a broken arm yet it works fine, they said i should have no movement at all yet i shovel snow in the winter and play hoops in the summer. Most of the time they tell you what you want to hear so you'll come back tomorrow and the next day. Now i know some are legit but i have yet to meet one. i fell for you mark and i hope you get well soon. i would pray for you but i do not pray for anyone, but that s anotehr long story for another time.

Agreed, however...

Message:
I worked in the industry (HIV research) for 13 years, so I certainly saw my share of "money talks, healthy patient walks". But just know there are in fact those that are doing the right thing, JSG. It pains me that you have yet to meet one, but I'm not surprised given the current state of health care in this country. Let us hope that a new administration in '09 turns that around.

HIV Positive

Message:
I recently retired from Dept of Corrections (Alabama) and from 1984-1999 I worked at the prison set aside for HIV Positive inmates. This is an awful way to die! I watched men arive for their incarceration period in perfectly good health weighing 220 lbs +. Before they died, they weighed -60 lbs. During their time, they continued to practice the lifestyle which not only got them into prison, but got them Aids as well. It's too bad that major political issues have to revolve around quality health care when so many other things that make our country great are almost ignored. What has your HIV research found out?

I'm no longer in the field...

Message:
...I'm now in law, but what I realized after 13 years (and what JSG is eluding to), is that in general, it's all about big business. Big Phama is now as lucrative as defense contracting in this country, if not more. Basically, as with any illness, you can make much more money on someone who doesn't die, but remains sick. Thus, big pharma has created a bunch of medicines that keep those with HIV/AIDS alive, yet sick, so they have to keep coming in for those office visits - and more medications. The same can be said for other illnesses, such as cancer. You will never see a CURE for any of these diseases, only better and more expensive medications. Heck, they can't even cure the common cold (much to my chagrin at the moment), yet take a look at the drug store at the thousands of choices in medications. Gee, I wonder where all the money is going? (hint: not to finding a cure)

where is the money going?

Message:
actually i have an answer for that the money is funding the research to find a medicine that cost more and does the same thing as the one that helps you live with cancer. I tihkn Chris Rock said it best, "hopefully one day you can have aids take a pill, and poof aids is gone for the next week you still have it but feel much better" i know thats not exactly what he said but its the same idea.

They will cure cancer and aids before even trying to cure the common cold so i am sorry for your suffering mark.

As for the inmates i guess they never learned. but when it comes to prison our world really does not care at all, they rather buy more bars, more guards and bigger walls. They really do not care about prisoner health and thats a shame, these people could change and when they get out they can change the world.
