Subject: Scandinavian Team - Team page 01

Message:

This is a forum thread primarily for the players in the "Scandinavian Team" gameknot.com here at GameKnot, where we discuss our game play, strategies, and all other team- or GameKnot related matters. However, NEVER use this (or any other fora) to ask for hints in ongoing games or conduct any other forms of cheating - if so, you will promptly be kicked from the team, and reported to GameKnot officials.

Other than that - chat away! For example, feel free to discuss already finished team matches, in order to develop your skills for future play. And good luck to you all, fellow chess compadres!

Best regards,
Tommy a.k.a PixelHermit

Timed-out games not in game list

Message:

Hi.

I've suffered two time-outs recently, and unfortunately one of the games was a team-match. (I think I would have lost anyway; the opposition was hard and I had a bad position - but it is a sad thing to forfeit due to time-out, nonetheless...)

Anyway, the thing is that I *was* online here at GameKnot at the very moment those two games were lost - but they didn't show up in my game-list! Hence, I didn't know that I had very little time left in those games... I always play about 40 games at a time (including 10-15 team games) and can't really keep track of exactly *all* my current opponents at any given time - so if two games are temporarily missing from my game-list, I probably wont notice it immediately. And it's a tricky thing to play your moves in time, when the games don't even show up in the list...

Question: Have any of you fellow team mates had the same experience? I.e. that your game list is incomplete, not showing all your current games? (Or that it is showing too many games, for that matter...) In any case, this seems like a GameKnot bug. Hopefully (and probably) it was a temporary "faux pas" in the GameKnot code, and not re-occurring.

game list

Message:
I must say that looks like a bug in the system, because I can never remember this happening to me. All my time-outs is due to my own doing or lack of making moves in time :-) So let's hope that was a one and only happening.

Unfortunately I lost my two first team matches (game and game) and i felt outplayed by a better player madmax3 . But as a curiosity my 2 consecutive games is vs. the same opponent!!! and hopefully I'm doing better here by probably win and lose one game each.

Best regards,
Joachim

Have just remind me that we have a new thread to discuss in, am having both lost and won games for example this game when the opponent saw one threat and moved for stopping that, but missed the other, a knight-fork does it tells in Swedish, same in English? game is a game I lost recently, and it's nothing to say about it, he played better than me. Will perhaps go away for a job without internet so I don't want any new games for a while shall set down my max games so you don't miss it pixelhermit :-) !!!

As expected I lost and won a game each vs. madmax3. I'm now about to finish my games vs a new opponent, kingdavidson . I have already won with the black pieces, game. In this game I allowed him to exchange Queens for development and won a central pawn for doubled pawns in the b-file. Unfortunately he blundered later, allowing me to pawn-fork his king and a rook and he resigned immediately. In the other game, game I'm sure to win with the white pieces. He has already fallen for a little trick. I invited him to promote pawn to Queen, but can not avoid checkmate in my next move. I'm happy with the play in both matches :-)

And in this game tricked I him to open the left side and its just a move left to checkmate, in the other game did I tricked him to open the right side and could make him check mate. I Have raised my rating 100 up since beginning of march and am happy for that. Hope also the team rating has raised !!

In the best chess shape of my life!?

Message:
I have set a new all time high rating, but must admit I don't think it will last :) I have periods where I win everything(13 games in a row so far) which if usually followed by a poor period, but I'm enjoying it as long as it last. I'm dreaming about crossing the 1700 mark now...

At the same time I'm also playing a lot fewer games now because of the nice and warm summer we have. Here in Bergen it hasn't been raining for 3 weeks and now it's 25-28 Celsius degrees.

Have a nice summer, Joachim

Game DB. Is it GameKnot arranged cheating or not?

Message:
After my team member email yesterday I got a nice and interesting respond from Emmanuel, Aka wemmanuel, regarding the Game DB here at GameKnot.

With allowance from Emmanuel I want to use this to start a discussion in the team and we(me and Emmanuel) would be delighted to hear the opinion of the Scandinavian team members. So please feel free to speak out at our forum site gameknot.com

Here is the conversation me and Emmanuel did have yesterday to start the topic:

Hello, norjoa!

Thanks for your message ! You wrote about using the Data Base of gameknot in your games especially for the openings. I personnaly try not to look at this database when I am playing because I thinks that it is almost like using a computer to help me and it is a little bit "cheating".

Best regards
Emmanuel

Hello, wemmanuel!

Thanks for a nice comment regarding the GK Database(GK DB). I have been thinking the same and considering if it is like cheating or not. And yes, strictly speaking I guess it is like using a computer and it is helping me. But never the less I think there is one important difference between the GK DB; A Computer find the best move for you(at least good enough for ordinary Grandmaster level) while the GK DB "only" gives you the best moves for an average of 1700-2100 GK rated players. because I don't find opening books that interesting to read. I also came to that as long as GK is giving this feature to all members I find it a bit hard to consider it as cheating. One of my problems has always been the opening game and given this one I saw that as an opportunity to maybe pick up some right moves in the start of the game. I still consider and think through the options that the database give me, mostly in regard to playing style(closed, open, aggressive, positional etc.)

Finally, I can only hope you find to respect players who make use of GK DB... :-) ?

I think this would have been a topic for discussion on the team forum site. Would you mind if I put it ot there and send a message to the rest of the team about it?

Best regards
Joachim

Hello, norjoa!

Ok to put my message on the team forum's site. I am actually very interested to know other players opinions on the DB.

On my side the few times I used the gameknot data base was only after taking a decision for a move, I looked into the base to see what most of the other players decided in the same position.

best regards
Emmanuel

about using DB

Message:
I fully agree on the comments from Emmanuel. I am in the same situation as Norjoa, beeing limited in the openingbooks. I find it really boring to read the books about openings too. It is a tough question wheather using DB or not. I guess it is up to the player to use it or not, since its there to use for all of us. Even though its not grandmaster-level its not your game, once you start using it. Your opponent is playing someone else, not a grandmaster, still someone else. I use the game analysis when the tough gets going.

Have fun.

Mika.

DB

Message:
Well, I must say I think it more like Norjoa. Okay, it is kind of cheating but everyone can (and will?) do it. So if you don't do it you can get kicked in the opening. I really don't like games where I am lost or very bad after 8-12 moves just because my opponent used database.

Opening database even may not be something called cheating. If you have books that contain same information, you can use those and it's not cheating, so why it is cheating when you have it in database form?

I have to say that it's okay to me to use database but it is okay to be without it (that does not count my personal database because it is coolest feature in the site).

Yes, I use database BUT I look 1-3 moves, usually only one, and then calculate the position. Then I go to database and look how my move does there and what kind of positions DB gives. So, DB is not deciding my moves, I am. But, I have to admit that if my move is bad after DB check, it will not be played and sometimes I try "odd" moves when they appear on database. It gives ideas, it does not tell what to do. And when there is only few played moves I may play move out of DB, well, you have to do that in sometime. :P

This is what I think of DB. It is great tool but if everybody plays moves from database, the opening will get quite boring. And hey, if you're opponent is playing from DB and not thinking himself there is good way to play move out of the database and... destroy him. ;)

DB or not DB...

Message:
Personally, I wouldn't use the GameKnot DB's for in-game analysis. Even though using databases *is* okay according to GameKnot rules (see FAQ gameknot.com and RoC gameknot.com) I find that the databases at GameKnot are a bit too limited and, frankly, somewhat incorrect. I do however occasionally use them in order to find new variations and twists to my own existing repertoire, but as I said, I never use them for specific (ongoing) games with specific opponents - only to get new ideas and/or for the pure amusement of playing through openings, good or bad... :-)

Also, as the databases offered by GameKnot aren't commented, there's no real way of learning a totally new opening from them, at least not in a good way. In my opinion, one would have to know at least the essence or major game plan of an opening first, and *then* you *might* learn a few things from the uncommented databases. In order to really come to understand a new opening simply from reading a database, many of the moves would have to be commented by experienced players. Using databases without comments, as the ones found here at GameKnot, would only be repeating moves from a library - and as Kreifi says, that will soon get quite boring. Like reading a book out loud, written in a language you don't know: you might pronounce the words correctly, but you still wouldn't know what they mean...

Hence my advises - lick'em or skip'em - would be:
a) When you use an opening's database, don't use GameKnot as your primary source for it: since the games aren't commented you wouldn't learn too much from them, and hence they defies the purpose. However, they add a decent amount of extra information when used together with other, more extensively commented databases.
b) If you use a database, never use it for studying ongoing games. While not considered cheating - at least not according to GameKnot rules - it would be more fair to only use your brain! :-) Also, remember that most of us learn more from the games we lose, than the games we win... lol
