Subject: RIP Wynternite and Ellynwyther
Message: I am sad to report that two of our team members were killed on April 15th whilst attending the scene of a fire.
LODD Report :: 04.15.2008, 1345 -
Lt. Kyle A. Andrus, FF/EMT-P/TMO Faye S. Tiernay ( Ellynwyther), FF/EMT-P Jacek A. Wawrzynski ( wynternite), and FF(P)/EMT-B Jason M. Landrey were killed April 15th, 2008 at a one family residential structure fire that was toned at 0455. Upon arrival, the fire was treated as such and the aforementioned, along with a second engine and full crew, were first on scene at 0501. The four entered the front and east side entrances and began to smother the fire with two 1 3/4" lines, making their way to the basement where the fire originated. The fire intensified and the structure suddenly became unsound. The incident commander ordered full evacuation of the building to position for defensive at 0511. The last response from Lt. Andrus was at 0512 calling firefighters down and setting off his pass alarm.
The basement was later discovered to have housed a methamphetamine lab. The basement flashed over shortly after the Lt.'s last communication igniting volatile chemicals and causing a detonation which is believed to be the cause of death. The mayday was sounded by the incident commander at 0514 and the structure moments later collapsed at 0515. RIT teams were unable to enter the structure to extract the firefighters due to the unbalanced nature of the structure, fire, and chemicals in the building until it had settled completely at approximately 0840.
The residents were absent at the time of the fire and it is believed that the methamphetamine lab was the cause of the fire. Authorities are considering charging the residents with manslaughter, though a full investigation is pending."
I only found out today but as a friend of both of them I am devastated by this news. Please say a prayer for them, they were both wonderful people and I was proud to be a friend and team captain/ team mate. I have no doubt Julia whose account I am having to post this on would echo my sentiments.
