New game / Start a New game / Choosing Opponents
I leave my new games open to just about anyone who wants to challenge me , but am i wrong to check out the "stats" before 2 moves ? I have been apologising a lot lately for cancelling games ,
Until i join my games are limited to 12 , and I'm on Gameknot to improve but specifically to enjoy my Chess
I am fortunate to get challenges and re-matches , hopefully for the way i play ,

Am i the only player to regularly do this , if not how do other players choose there opponents , am i ok to play like this ? How do other players improve ?

Relative insight...
Goals vary depending upon perception of the game. Its ok,to accept all incoming challenges and win or lose and gain insight from both.Where you went wrong in a game is just as good as where you went "right"in a game, especially against a stronger opponent, and then build your strengths or better defenses for the next game on that precept.

There is also players who realize that they will always be a bit weaker in certain types of openings or opening defenses and avoid them. There is nothing wrong with this either. No shame in avoiding a Sicilian, for example. Its up to you.Perhaps one day,you will become better at that defense or playing against that defense and study it in more detail. So,if you cancel the game after move #2....its ok....and besides, the rules do permit it.Heck, most of my cancellations are in less than 2 moves! Some other players truthfully will NOT improve beyond a certain level(rating level)no matter how much they study. Its called the "plateau level"of yourself.Lets face it.You can read all the books you want, play all the puzzles suggested, play a million opponents in all rating levels and have the best coaches on Earth. But this does not mean or guarantee you will become a master at the game!Self admittance to this fact already places you above others and gives you a self perceived insight to your limitations. So,for example, you play your best against equal or stronger opponents with a Ruy Lopez, then there is no shame in sticking with that kind of game, and avoiding an English Opening, for example, and cancelling that type of game, maybe to play it in the future, but not now!

As to checking out the "stats" of other players....nothing wrong with that!Infact, every game I ever played on GK I have checked out opponents stats and past game wins and losses, many times for weeks before accepting a challenge or placing a challenge with that opponent!
The players profile alone are some of the keys to either play or avoid that opponent. Is he a 2000 rated player a month ago,and now is at 1800?Why?Time-outs,losses,resigning games after 5 moves or what?Is the profile "too good"to be true or leaves you suspicious?100 wins, zero losses 3 draws against equal or better rated opponents?Maybe he isn't cheating, true, but then it might be better to wait a few months to accept a game to see how that opponents record changes or not.The graph tells alot.Highest rating level tells alot,time-outs tell alot. And going into the opponents past games and understanding his weakness's and strengths in certain types of styles of play, can be your key to success. For example,I would never play a Sicilian against Cyrano if I were on the white side. His wins as black are phenomenal.Am I a chicken? No,just smart.Intelligents to avoid things in life, like walking away from a fight is many times better than the fight itself.Coming back to Cyrano on another day playing an English opening, for example, has the level of insightfullness, that many players on GK do not have.So checking out a players profile and his past games together, cancelling games(I have cancelled hundreds) and avoding certain types of openings,if even for the time being,is ok.And don't let anyone tell you differently and believe it!

So keep up that cancelling and keep up that profile detective work! And don't challenge me amacivn...for I will cancel the game!Ha ha!

I very seldom cancel a game,
I started playing here to learn how to play chess. I set a goal of 500 finished games no matter what my opponets rating, to learn the basics of the game.
But I always check my opponets profile page/graph before starting to play, and I usually check it out during the game also, to see how his/her other games are playing out.
Right now the only time I cancel a game is when their average rating and average opponent ratings are within 100 points of each other and he has over 70% wins.

I keep
writing replies to this post , but i've just realised any profile detective work is only as good as me!, i i have one guy trapped , and i'm currently watching him move in one other game , so i got this one wrong because i didn't check his time-outs 12%, because mine are @ 10% because of pc problems when i first started, so i gave him the benefit, and lost!
As i'm enjoying chess games @ the moment not playing to improve , if that makes sense, I am choosing opponents who play with a bit of imagination , who's 1st ten moves i can't guess ,

@fr1ar i like your 70% rule

@tactical_abyss , i enjoy reading the thoughts of top players , i to prefer to win but i can enjoy losing if my opponent "sets" me up , it's what the game is about to me , don't worry about the challenge (as if !!) but i do enjoy watching some of your games
