Move Time Limit
I am new to this site - really enjoying the games I am playing.

However, one of my games has a 14 day move time limit. The game will take "forever".

Is it possible to reduce the time limit during a live game if your opponent is in agreement.

Any advice would be much appreciated

No, you cannot modify the time settings. However you and your opponent just can play at a faster pace...

I play a lot of games at a 14 day time limit. They generally don't take forever. Very rarely do either my opponent or myself take the full 14 days. I very rarely take more than 3 days and I usually play slower than my opponent.

sorry mrmrh
But you didn't have to start/join the game... you'll have to put up with it unfortunately. In future you should play games with shorter time controls.

Here's a long 14 day per move game to cheer you up game It's been going on for over 5 years

...the game will take "forever"...

Considering you're on move fourteen on the fourth day of playing, I wouldn't think the game will take forever.

I would like to see a more sophisticated time control allowing one to accumulate unused time (roll over minutes). Here are some examples of what can be done from non-chess sites.

Blake, the simple answer is "why"? - 3 days or 3 days and 11 minutes for the next move does not matter at all. The main feature of GK chess is that time is never an issue.

My opinion is that games would proceed faster if the time you saved on routine moves would allow you more time to consider critical moves.

That is a good idea, although, someone mite move quickly at the start and then slow down near the end of the game kind of like what winds_of_wisdom said .

They might, but the time controls could be such that games would not drag out as long; but you would still have plenty of time to make critical moves. Say you had 90 days to play the game plus 3 days more for each move you made. You would have lots of time for critical moves but couldn't drag the game out for years.

I think it is true ...
that a 14 day TC, in considering postponements, might actually take close to forever in practical terms, if one (or especially both) of the participants were to want it so. Which is why I do not go in for that TC myself. I mean, despite the fact that I am at heart a Postal player and used to the fact that a game might take a year or two and that does not bother me ... with the 14 day TC it becomes a situation where stalling strictly for the sake of keeping the game alive is a very real option. And there are those players who will "play on for a heart-attack" from their opponent, tho hopefully this is few and far between. And I very much disagree with a philosophy such as that. But if they are not obviously continuing for a "heart attack" win, then it should be accepted as part of the game. There are many players here who will have disabling illness to contend with, or family sickness/issues, work responsiblities, etc. And that must be remembered. Many who play online, in a turn based fashion, do so for such reasons. Or just to have the maximum time to try to play their best game, too. And when within the rules, then it must be borne, for whatever reason they play slowly. So you must take the lesson from it, and adjust your playing accordingly.

Tho I must say, I do like the idea of being able to change a TC on a game in progress if both players were to agree to that!

I think USCF postal chess is done by e-mail now. They use compuserve.

Move TimeLimit
Thanks very much everyone who took the trouble to reply for these comments. I am fairly
new on here and I wasn't sure if I would get any replies! I hope nobody including my opponent thought I was complaining. I accepted the game in haste not realising it had a 14 day time limit. I just wanted to know if there was any way of negotiating for the move time limit to be reduced if both players agreed.
regards,
