How do the inactive accounts hurt you? I think they may allow the site to get a higher rate for their advertising.

Yeah, that and if they ever decide to return, they won't have to re-register. Perhaps the thought process of "Well, I already have an account at Gameknot, so I will just go there" instead of elsewhere.

Inactive accounts
Some profiles stay normal for an infinite amount of time (honololou), some information may be removed (moro), some are deleted (rur36)... it is a mysterious process.

I don't think that javel was asking his question about inactive players because it bothered him in any way, hurt him or anything else of that nature. He may have been curious about inactive players to gain some insight about how the site works, nothing more, nothing less.He also did not say that he "expects" or "wants" those inactive accounts deleted.I myself might have asked that question, just incase I become inactive for a few years to see what might happen to my account, for example.I'm glad to see that they do keep accounts active regardless of inactivity, atleast for the most part.If I decide to stop playing on this site for a few years,i'll still probably continue to pay my Gold membership fee. This probably will keep everything in my account/profile from becoming deleted or erased.

I do think that those inactive accounts don't have to be deleted, but they should become invisible for others after some time. Only the owner should be able to reactivate them.

For eg ... Florinserban has been in the top10 ratings for months without playing .. at some point even Number 2 I believe. It's only because of the rating-inflation that he's slowly going down the ratings. He's a nice example of an account that should have been de-activated until the moment he re-activates it again.

Fade away vs. crash-and-burn
As a minimum an account name would need to remain as a data-base key for any annotated games, puzzle contributions, GK's opening move database, tournament cross-tables, etc.

What I find interesting are the two ways a player goes inactive: 1) fade-away (keep playing until 0 games remain), or 2) crash-and-burn (e.g. 50 games in progress then the player vanishes and all 50 games time-out). In OTB play, the fade-away is what usually happens (unless the player freaks-out and flees the tournament hall never to be seen again!). When an OTB player becomes inactive he takes most of his rating points with him, which is a large part of why overall OTB ratings tend to deflate. On the other hand when a GK player crashes-and-burns he usually gives back most of his rating points to the player community, which is why GK's overall ratings are inflating. (Imagine what would happen to the global economy if each time a person died we followed the ancient Egyptians' practice of entombing all wealth and possessions with the deceased, compared to what would happen following a pandemic shifting the wealth of many into the hands of the survivors?)

But as usual, I digress. When I go I'll follow MacArthur's dictum and just fade away.

Around 10 years ago or so,I was playing online chess on another site and had 54 games going at one time.My rating was established at 2488.I had suddenly lost my job back then with the plant closing, and had lost all interest in everything except to find a new job.Playing chess at that time of my life suddenly shifted to zero interest.I then went offline from the chess site.A year later after I found another job and felt much better,I returned to the same chess site.I even forgot about the 54 games that I was playing a year prior.Of course, all 54 had timed out.My jaw dropped when I seen the rating after i returned which was something like 1785.Many of my opponents were a few hundred rating points below me,and that made matters worse.I never did return to that site....

That is to say,I never returned to that site again after I seen my new low rating.Sometimes it is better to start over using a new name and a new computer than try and build up an old established rating. For example, here on GK I am 2386 and have played only 30 games so far.If I tried to build up to near 2488 from a new low established rating on that other site of 1785,i'm sure it would have taken many many more games than 30 to reach my high rating of 2400+ again.Using provisional "strategies" is sometimes a better shortcut.

Fade away...
... I have tried the "fade away" gig on this site, and - wouldn't you believe it - ran into a hundred-mover that took over a year to play. So in the end I faded back in...
Damn.

thank to everybody to answer me
yes we can discuss if it is better or worse to delete inactives but as said Heinzkat there seem to be no rules :some players are deleted and some seem to stay forever(?)even without be paying members to me it is strange and i would like to understand the logic behind this.

I know someone ...
that recently returned to GK & needed to meet a request from the site to change e-mail addr to an active one & then click to have "instructions" for reactivating sent to there. Since this was all done (fulfilling the GK instructions, that is) rather quickly I do not know just what restrictions being "inactive" may have created. The site could still be accessed, at least to the point of reactivating and of reading PM's. I didnt ask about the specific "Instructions" but may try to do so after seeing this thread.

Good point from Blake point about subscriber numbers being advantageous. Probably a consideration, imo too.
. But also the simple fact some people do take a hiatus from Chess (or GK) as I did for a couple years back in college days. It may be simpler to just keep accounts rather than reeastablish another? It seems nice for the player to know they are welcome back; still have a "place to call (Chess)Home" so to say. And better than having to reregister.

A thing that troubles me .... if a person is not playing Chess games, does that mean they are "inactive" ?! They may still forum{verb}. Or perhaps just come to read them, and see some games! Surely there are some here (and I won't mention my, uh Any names here   who just find more fun talking about Chess or with Chess players, than playing at times. Think I'd like to take a cue from ionadowman and just consider myself a "fader" rather than "inactive" if my last game were to unfortunately finish unexpectedly.
