Ladder Oddity
Those that play the ladder know that you can only challenge someone within 10% if your ladder rank. I've noticed some that seem to be able to get around that. Look at yucevarlik for example. He has a few examples but the most striking is his game against starkkev @ ladder 13 while he was at ladder 1255. I know ladder positions change but starkkev was never higher than 40. How was this possible? Also, off topic I think there should be a limit to the number of challenges at one time, not the number of ladder games. A person could always have enough games going to avoid ever having to accept a challenge by a lower ladder ranked player.

Strange..
No idea how someone at about No 1255 could challenge No 13. Should not be possible unless 10% is different in GK terms ^-^

I see the problem as being that players can select who they want to play, get a minimum number of games in progress, and then sit tight (this is what I did!). Perhaps the minimum number of games should apply to white only (i.e. "white" would be the number of games in which a player is challenged.

Perhaps he quit the ladder after the game had begun, starting at the bottom again.

The ladder hasn't been going all that long. I would imagine that if a game were started at the beginning, and one or both players took some vacation time, enough games might have finished to cause such a massive shift in places.

Another oddity...
Almost everyone has RAISED their ranking compared to the first of the month. Why? A lot of players have joined and quit.

I quit the ladder
Yep Heinzkat - that's probably right. I joined the ladder but have quit because it doesn't add anything more than the league system - but has the problem of having too many games against mismatched opponents. I much prefer a close contest against a player of similar rating. The ladder system hasn't been thought through properly - when you join, you should be slotted in based on ranking not at the bottom, and if you lose a game you should fall more than just 1 spot.

My perception ...
of the ladder is that it was designed in such a way as to promote Winning of games to the utmost. Eg little is earned for a Draw. And the penalty is small for losing. Thus Play A Lot & Win A Lot seems to be the name of the game !? And it also encourages players of differing ratings to meet by offering something to the higher rated in the form of climbing the ladder, where they might not otherwise be inclined to play some games that gain nearly nothing in rating. And of course they are required to play when challenged. So far, I like it. Which doesnt mean I can keep up with Fast Ladder forever tho. And will need to drop out eventually I'm sure. It would be nice if one could quit Ladder for awhile, but not need to start all over. I'm not sure how that might be worked out fairly tho ?

Fast ladder already appears to be starting to fill up with 2000+ rated players at the top. I am just outside top 100 myself and the only players above me that are open for challenges are players with such high ratings that I have little chance of a win. Once my current games finish I feel I may not progress much higher

Are the numbers coming down of players in ladder? Has anyone noticed?

I've notice a small increase in # of players.
