Social Chat
Why is this on the Menu to choose from?Question is for Gameknot
|
|
As a constant reminder for GK users that that section is missing!?

I think it's meant to be a constant reminder of what happens if the community takes things too far. I've been in forums that had to have things taken away for similar reasons, but their approachw as to remove all traces of it. I think it's sort of a good idea to be more up front and say "This is what we had once, but it was abused. Do not abuse what is remaining, or that will be gone too."

Chessnovice
That might be a reason, but on the other hand this is still provoking negative reactions somehow. It is like a Tantalus' punishment.

I agree with chessnovice.Infact,we should consider ourselves lucky on this site.Atleast we DO have a forum. On another very popular blitz site(I won't mention the name, because I don't know if your allowed to here),a while back the administrators took away the ENTIRE forum! You could even chat while simultaneously looking at the challenge list of opponents. There were also different color words to distinguish quicker who was writing what. But they took away the forums due to too much garbage talk and sticking one another with pins. On yet another very popular blitz site(won't mention name) there is a "social type" forum that deals with "controversial world subjects",religion and much more.I think that there were more people having there comments deleted than posted!Perhaps the very wise administrators of GK realize this and want to avoid this before the water cooks over the edge. For social chat they probably feel its better in the clubs that you can join here.

|
also to add... My opinion on why they keep the "social chat"still listed as off, may be due in part to new players arriving on GK(perhaps from some of those other sites!)and to show a sort of "street sign"of caution beyond what they list in the rules.Removing the "sign"may cause more crashes at "THIS"intersection!

|
I think the bottom line is this...
The "man behind the curtain" at GK is aware that there are many topics that are potential fire starters i.e. religion, politics, love, war (I could go on) and he feels that it is not in the best interest of this site to encourage discussions on these topics because of the damage that can occur. Besides, I think (and I could be wrong - but I doubt it) that most of us, a great percentage, 99.99%, are here to play chess. I am sure there are players here that are interested in talking politics etc. Many have our opinions on world affairs etc..., but I think most would agree that there are other forums better suited for those discussions. How about a nice game of chess?

yes, that is just about everything I mentioned as well...

social chat
As a guy who took part in the social chat I'll tell you what it was like. The subjects were what was on everyone's mind. The Iraqi war, Mexicans slipping across the border into the US. Music was explored in depth---great discussions. We had people coming to the social forum who didnt even know how to play chess. They came to listen and join in to the forum. It was impressive. The discussion on evolution was like a college lecture hall turned into a beer brawl. It was amazing to listen to the depth of knowledge of these guys---unfortunately, in the heat of passion they said things that were better left unsaid. I wonder what would happen if the social chat was brought back with a warning by Gameknot---enter at your own risk-if someone hurts your feelings---dont come crying to me!

No need for Social chat
I was a member of GameKnot a long while ago, under a different nick that is now forgotten (seriously, I forgot it ) ). I remember the Social chat and it was horrible. That in part was what drove me away back then, and I did not rejoin until years later. There is absolutely zero need for that here, and although what remains kind of pokes me in the eye ("not tidy") I think it is a good symbol and should stay where it is for the reasons already mentioned.

Well, you could enter the social chat or not enter the social chat. You could read the post or not read the post. It sounds like you must have visited the social chat on occassion even though you say it drove you away. You could have come to gameknot and played chess. You could have visited the chess forum which was really well behaved. No disparing remarks about anyone was allowed, no cursing---I mean the man was strict! And yet you say you were compelled to visit the social chat??? You'll have to explain that to me---I dont quite follow you.

I was surprised the Social Forum lasted as long as it did.
It was dominated by a group of self styled elitist who did not welcome interference from the general population the "don't come here ... go play chess etc." was used on a daily basis by these anti-social, abusive and self-indulgent people who evidently felt that socially acceptable behavior was for lesser beings. Why should a quality chess site be expected to cater to a small minority for a non-chess related service. Especially a service that reflected negatively on GK management. GK has consistently upgraded and improved it's service to chess-players, but no site can be all things to all people. The Social Forum has been closed for quite some time now and GK continues to flourish and I have to believe it is because of their commitment to what brought us all here in the first place! Chess.
