Is the average rating of GK players increasing?
A few things tell me Yes. 4 years ago a rating of 2300 was #1 on GK now it is ~2600. 4 years ago, a rating of ~1750 would have been in 95 percentile, now a rating of ~1900 is 95 percentile! So is the average rating of the players going up?

I have no idea but the stats you have quoted only relate to the top 5% of players. The "average" rating will be far from the top 5%. Without researching it you could pose an equally convincing argument that the tail is getting longer, thus the average isn't changing. I would be interested to find out though! The Poodle.

Absolutely agree
You need the distribution function that gameknot uses for the ratings. I guess it is similar to ELo. Check this for culture: www.chessbase.com

The only way for the top players to go from 2300 to 2600 is if points are pumped into the system from somewhere. And conversely, as is happening to OTB (over the board) ratings, is that there is a rating deflation. One reason for this is that when a GK player "quits" it happens all at once. Let's say a player has 50 games in progress, and for some reason he quits (I call this crash-and-burn syndrome . A good chunk of his rating points get pumped back into GK's rating system. On the other hand, if an OTB player quits and is never seen again, he takes his rating points with him.
