...new feature with cool perk!
I really like the new feature about making private notes about other players...even cooler is how that is now incorporated into the mouseover info about that person! Nice job, Gameknot!!

Me Too~! I just noticed it myself and figured it had been here awhile, just overlooked by me, as so often occurs. Such as with the Mouseover aspect of it. Thanks for pointing that out! I need to go look at that and see it in action. Sounds cool .

One more lament to air tho. I still cannot see how/why we must make due without having the Forum Search function available anymore. It was one thing I really found quite useful and convenient. Especially to see something such as a list of all the threads that a certain player-Nik had posted in. Or a particular Chess topic. And best of all, it would search thru all the pages of that Forum, not just page one. Phew & Boo-hoo.
GK, can we please have our Search back~!/?! };-(

It is now possible to withdraw from a mini-tournament in progress, although in the rules it still states you must play all games out.

"Are you sure you'd like to permanently withdraw from this mini-tournament? YES / NO
If you withdraw from the mini-tournament, you will still have to finish all games that have already been started; all remaining unstarted games will be recorded as lost in the mini-tournament table, but will not affect your rating and stats; this mini-tournament will still be marked as active for you for the next 30 days, during which time it will count against the number of mini-tournaments you can participate in at the same time according to your premium membership."

Another recent change I've noticed is that heinzkat has a new avatar -- keep up the good work, everyone!

April 28, 2009: Mini-tournaments
By popular demand, it is now possible to withdraw from mini-tournaments at any time. Please note however, that if you withdraw from a mini-tournament, you will still need to finish all games that have already been started for you (i.e. no active games will be cancelled). All remaining unstarted games will be recorded as lost in the mini-tournament table, but will not affect your rating and stats. Also, the mini-tournament will still be marked as active until you finish the remaining games in progress (if any), or for the next 30 days (whichever occurs last), during which time it will count against the number of mini-tournaments you can participate in at the same time according to your premium membership.

97,367 games extra in the GK database which makes it now 845,385; the World database still contains 1,673,750 games.

"This is a database of 845,385 chess games played online on GameKnot since 2000. Only the games between players rated 1600 and above are present in this online chess games database. Unrated games, games that ended in time-out or finished in less than 5 moves are excluded. It can be used as a chess opening database or an opening book."

User name change
It is now possible to change your user name, via settings in the main menu on the left side of the page. Please note that this function is only available to premium membership subscribers, and that user names cannot be changed more than once a year. If a player changes their user name, the previous one will be shown on their stats/profile page to avoid any confusion.

Fairly interesting. Perhaps I'll change mine. I chose Heinzkat because my first three or so picks of names were already used at that moment.

...
That's interesting. I wonder, though... if heinzkat changed his name, would someone be able to take the abandoned "heinzkat" name?
kingdawar

I suspect all name changes are reviewed manually by Mr. Mike, therefore the three day waiting period. Also A LOT of data has to be changed in the GK records.

Greetings
patzercheckerknightmaremate (good thing these name changes are allowed only once a year)

Okay, I've set my alarm timer ...
to remind me to delete that post at dawn ...but in the meantime; betcha didn't know the
new forums would DO THAT ?! I sure didn't. (Make line one of a post stretch the thread to
be over two monitors WIDE, that is ...) But it IS a new feature, right? ...with the changing of the Forums

May 10, 2009: New chess boards
You can now choose from several additional "textured" options to customize the chess board and chess diagrams to your liking — several types of real wood, marble, granite, etc. (via "Settings" in the main menu to the left, or via "Board settings" on every game page). It is now also possible to import PGN notation into "Analyze the board" window (via "Setup board").

Google Chrome browser
I use the Google Chrome browser, but a couple of days ago, the game boards stopped
displaying. the "My Games" list is fine, but when I select a game, everything EXCEPT the
board is displayed. This just started on or about June 10th. When I use IE7 (or IE8)
everything looks normal. I really, really prefer Chrome to IE8...help?

Shame that all these pretty but superficial changes...
... have removed one of the site's great advantages - the ability to play on most mobile devices.

Still haven't heard anything back from GK on that since I reported it yonks ago. I suppose it's more fun to play with technology than to provide comprehensive service (or even respond) to your paying customers... which I will no longer be when my current subscription runs out.

I also prefer Chrome and it is working fine.

I don't really have any suggestions except to say I doubt the fault is with Chrome. try reloading
as suggested.

I find Chrome to be much faster, and another advantage is that the GK tool bar doesn't work
with it. Yes, advantage. The sight of that little flashing light saying 'your move' was enough to
repeatedly interrupt serious work. Now I can just look every now and then.

no one has said that you must install the GK TOOLBAR. So if it has bored you then you shouldn't install it

To the contrary! I wasn't bored with it. But constantly seeing 'C'mon, C'mon, see who has
moved!' interrupted me. Well, I allowed it to interrupt, and like most of us, I have things more
important than chess to do. Oh! Did I just say something which upset a few people?

Don't be angry : just remove the toolbar and no more flashing light, and no more interruption

I wonder if this latest change has anything to do with tactical_abyss's problem with open challenges disappearing? Perhaps it's a prelude to filtering different ratings so that some posts can remain longer than others without filling up the screen?
