Hi,

The November 12 daily chess puzzle contest only has a mate-in-2 solution if the black king can't castle. If the black king can castle, then it takes several moves to force mate.

Solving the puzzle in 2 moves requires knowing whether or not the king may castle. If that info is not provided as part of the puzzle, then it's not a fair puzzle.

Sam Loyd's problem

It can easily be proven that Black cannot castle. If this position is legal, then what was Black's last move leading to this position? It can't have been a move by the pawn on a7 or c7...

Heinzkat,

I see what you mean by saying that the position is legal, then black could not castle. I just spotted your message on a related thread. *sheepish grin* Obviously, I had not deduced that castling was not an option when I worked out the solution.

It is amusing to see that IF Black was allowed to castle, after 1. Qa1 O-O-O, Black would have reached a fortress and the game is indeed a drawn (in contrast with what ionadowman claimed in the other thread, although one can argue that 1. Qc6+ wins alright)
