Auto-vacation for gold members
I lost 10 games on timeout because I had to leave suddenly for a few days.
I thought paying members had an option to pause all games in case of time out? What happened
to that option? I want my games back!

As Heinzkat's second link says, if you have an emergency, gameknot will postpone your games automatically for 5 days. I know this because although I tried my hardest to never time out, I had one day of intense life that overtook me. (about 2 weeks ago!) So, I got an email that an emergency postponement of 5 days automatically happened. I was also told that unregistered users get one of those per year, and I believe registered get one every 4 months. This is a very handy feature, unless of course, you get called away for 6 days. (RARE!!)

I was very grateful for this although I didn't know it existed. Now I'm much more aware of my timeout vulnerability and will postpone if I think there is even a moderate risk. And as I'm registered, 4 months of good behavior will allow me to screw up again without risk!

repecmps? Did this not happen for you? Or did you already use up your emergency postponement?

It would nice if premium members, at least, had the option to specify the duration of the emergency postponement beforehand. If you are frequently called away or hospitalised for say, two weeks, then this possible improvement would give extra peace of mind. Just a suggestion, as five days is not adequate insurance for the sort of emergencies I am likely to endure.

I don't know, emergency postponement should be limited, in my opinion. I don't mean to sound insensetive, but if people are called away suddenly for longer periods of time, then their chess games should be the least of their worries. It takes a minute to postpone, if you haven't got that much time, then whatever is happening must be very important, more important than a couple of hundred rating points. It's horrible when you time out of loads of games and your rating crashes, I've been there, but it's not important. If anything, it gives you an ego boost as you beat everyone in your new rating zone comfortably!

If you know that you might be away from chess suddenly for more than five days, and you are concerned about your games, then perhaps you should make some of your own emergency plans... ie give your log in details and instructions on postponing to a relative. Also, only playing 7-day games while moving daily will give you an extra six days minimum (7 if you count the extra day GK gives to whoever is to move on Sunday morning) before your emergency postponement is activated.

As for the OP, have you postponed recently? If you postone for ten days, when you return, you cannot postpone again for ten days, so a recent vacation would mean the emergency postponement could not be activated. That's the best I can come up with, I'm afraid.

Wouldn't it be nice if on the vacation page (or someplace similar) GK would tell you whether or not your Emergency Postponement was currently available? Or if you had recently used your E.P., wouldn't it be nice if you were told when your E.P. was last used? Why isn't this information made available somewhere?

So a recent vacation would mean the emergency postponement could not be activated.

No, the emergency postponement is triggered regardless. I think him being a relatively "new" member has more to do with it - he has not been here for over four months. But GameKnot's policy is a bit vague. Somewhere they say that the emergency postponement is only for premium members .and somewhere else that non-premium members can only use one per year.

emergency postponement
I have the same question as markb56. There should be a place that says when you used your last E.P. or states when it is available. I have looked everywhere for this information or a place to make a suggestion to add this information. I had a situation where I would need to use a postponement in about a week, so I didn't want to use it. I had an unexpected emergency (my nephew took his life). I didn't worry about getting to a computer because I thought it had been over 4 months since my last E.P. Well, I was wrong and timed out of several games that I was well ahead and let down my team.

It would be nice if on the postponement page that there was the same kind of information for E.P. as there is for regular postponements. Then if you didn't really think you needed to postpone and you knew the E.P. was available, you could avoid taking a postponement with peace of mind. I don't like to postpone and slow down games unnecessarily because I might need it.

I'm sorry to hear about your nephew, ladylinda. That's a hurt that will take a long time to heal. The E.P. is like an insurance policy, but what good is an insurance policy if one is not sure whether it's in effect? If GK simply had a status line saying whether one's E.P. was available then that would give us assurance our insurance is valid.

You should never count on the emergency postponement to be triggered... just postpone yourself

(maybe that's why the information isn't shown - silly but it might be the reason)

I tend to agree with Heinz here. One should never count on the EP. It is intented for completely unforeseen circumstances. If you know you're going to be away, you should always postpone if possible. Remember, you can never know if there will be a situation in the future where you don't know beforehand that you cannot play, and then you'd need that EP.

MaCa, are you saying you'd prefer not to know if your E.P. were available? You can simply ignore such information if you prefer it that way.

Personally, I've learned to mark my E.P. usage on a calendar if and when I use it, but in this miracle age of computers that we live in, is it just possible that this information could be kept track of electronically rather than through paper and pencil?

No markb56, I never said anything like that. If it was possible to view when my EP was triggered for the last time, or just to find out if it is available at the moment, I'd probably take advantage of that feature. But I would never count on just the EP, because it is intended for completely unforeseen circumstances. If one knows beforehand that one is going to be away, one should use a proper postponement (if possible). Relying on the EP purely in a situation like that is not a good idea, because you'll never know when there will be something completely unforeseen, where you don't have an opportunity to make a real postponement. That's what the EP is for, but then if you've already used it...

MaCa.

MaCa, I think we are both in agreement: you say that one should depend on safe driving and proper seat-belt usage rather than depend on air-bags to save one's life, and I argue I'd like to know whether my air-bags are functional. Let's agree that GK would be safer to drive if we had both.
