"Players Online" - GK Homepage
This is not a complaint or anything, just an observation. Do you think GK really expects us to believe that the fluttering "players online" count on the home page is actually representative of the actual fluctuation of the online user count? This is not a true reflection of the count, just a little animation-type code that makes the number fluctuate in a way that makes it appear to be accurately reflecting users logging in and out scores of time per minute.

How do I know it's not real? Because 1) It seemed like an unkind idea to the conservation of bandwidth and server resources that GK loves to convince us they are famous for (like the green dot not being beside our usernames when we are online, because they "want to save us bandwidth", haha), so.... 2) I logged off my DSL and watched this little critter still wiggle and waver with the numbers (even though my PC was completely offline).

NOTE: Just for the record, I'm not saying the number isn't roughly correct, as I do believe it queries for the correct number regularly to 'generally' display the roughly correct amount.

My questions are...

1) Does Gameknot really think we are all falling for this? Or do they realize it looks like a silly joke to many of us, and

2) Could they not spend their time on better, more feature-related things to spend their programming time on?? (this comment I make with a grain of salt, since I suppose it is possible that some guy worked through his lunch break to show his boss this little gift of programming towards the larger project...)

3) For those that noticed this and realized it was fake, did you also feel a little offended by this seemingly desperate act of false pretense? And wonder how many people who don't have the general IT knowledge actually think GK is so COOL because so many users are coming and going?

Just my 2 cents, comments welcome!

But ...
how does this fit with the fact we can pull the actual names of online players ? Does that list do the same?

The top of the list actually says "Players seen on this site within last 10 minutes".

rikved is not alone, I also feel some friction with that little 'feature', and neither do I like the explanation ""want to save us bandwidth". Both do not feel truthful.

No
I think this objection is just a quibble, and if anything I am more annoyed by the time I wasted
reading about it here. I suggest we all play chess instead of worrying about things like this.
That is what I plan to do. My game could stand some improvement.

"and if anything I am more annoyed by the time I wasted reading about it here."

Haha! I echo this sentiment!

Ah but there is a reason for that "ten minute" delay feature. It has to do with the fact that the Green Light does not go out on you until you have been offsite for 10 minutes. And actually there is a reason for that delay as well: The forums and the Blitz area are both loosly associated to the mainsite, and when a player is in one of the two, the mainsite does not recognize them as being "online". [GK told me this long ago]
Hence the delay allows for a blitz game to be played, for instance, before your green light goes out. Tho it is true one can be in forums for hours, but after 10 mins they will not be Green anymore. [ and we all know Green is Keen nowadays, er again. History repeats itself, all over again~! And, right now we are reliving the Ice Age in Iowa, btw. 20 below ??!! ]
Of course it also helps keep the online numbers up  .
Would it help if there was a feature showing "Total Gk users today"? Of course then "today" requires defining. Greenwich day? Last 24 hours? etc.
Well I hear I must go, Kate tells me there is a "House" episode on where the Chess player just went crazy and beat his opponent over the head with the time clock. Actually I've nearly seen this done and heard of worse ... but i digress and its TV time. And it was not me. }8-D

I thought the "real-time updating" feature added is pretty silly too. If you refresh the front page it will invariably jump over 20 from the "real-time" displayed number
