Starting a game & then going offline
When I start or join a game it is because I have some time to spare and therefore want to get on with the opening. Why is it that so many players go offline as soon as you join without even making a move? Surely if you have no time to move then you should wait until you do before you start or join a game. Time cannot be a factor because there is always someone ready to join your game whenever you start it.

It's corr. chess. You shouldn't generally expect your opponent to respond immediately. Why should the opening be any different?

Yes, quite. You cannot agree a time of 3 days per move or whatever and expect your opponent to fly through the opening. Some people like to move once a day and no more. Some people like to analyse the opening to ensure they don't make a mistake. Some people are at work and might have to go as there boss is doing the rounds. Some people simply can't be bothered to play chess anymore, and go to pokerstars. That last one is me, by the way.

I'm afraid you just have to accept that in correspondence chess, people can and will use up their time, even for seemingly automatic moves.

alot of players dont even have their online status showing at all.

If your anything like me, I like to play alot of games, (for the time being) and their is a 3 game restriction for posting challenges, otherwise I'd probably post 20+ challenges at once....I try to make my moves as quickly as possible, but its not always possible. I think if you chose to play corr chess, you shouldnt expect fast moves to occur even in 2-3 days per move games. If you want a fast game, join the blitz games... and yes heinzkat that is a good point also if u choose several or many times per day, it should generally lead to a faster game.

Kingnick, if that's your attitude, i suggest you leave this particular chess site...

I stopped playing two days ago. Join my club!

I generally do as Heinzkat mentioned above...which is to specify more options in the sent challenge box when posting a challenge.Of course that cannot be done if you joined someone elses game and they sent you the challenge,or if you simply go down the rating lists and select a random opponent out of the list.I think the best way to insure an opponents swifter moves is to closely examine their profile like I do.I generally select opponents that have an average move time of only a few hours, some only 2 or 3 hours average move time. And then top it off with only accepting 2 day move time games. So even then,I might get someone who dosen't move right away in the first move or so,but it dosen't matter, because my opponent will generally begin to move quickly or "make up" for slow early moves shortly thereafter, following their own profile average move time trend....and "catch up".
The other option,if kingnick or anyone else dosen't like that their opponent didn't move immediately,is to simply cancel the game on move one or two.I admit,I did that only one time when my opponent took 6 days to make the first 2 moves and their profile illustrated average move time of 2 hours and they had no other games.....but that was an incoming challenge to me,not an outgoing posted challenge,so I could not set an options box.Options are in place for a reason, whether to cancel a game for any reason you desire, set the move average challenge box or ignore lists when posting a challenge and you don't want a particular player to accept your challenge again and again.
As mentioned above, however, this is about corresp.,not blitz,so delays must be tolerated. You can minimize the delays most times by setting options, looking at profiles...but there is no guarantee.Like I said, cancel a game if you must(non tournament)by move 2 and move on to some other opponent.
