Why hasn't game timed out?
My opponent in a tournament game hasn't made a move in 8 days. He hasn't postponed or used
any vacation days. Why hasn't this game timed out? thanks

What time controls are you using?
Hi larryslade1!

Can you be a bit more specific about what time controls you are allowed in your game? For instance, if your opponent has a 10 or 14 day time control then he will not time out if he has made a move 8 days ago. However, if your time control was 7 days you may need to factor in the fact that on Sunday 1 day is usually added to the time controls unless they are up to the max.

I hope this clarifies things for you.

Cheers.

Why hasn't game timed out?
Hi Joanne,
My opponent is boblegol. It's a tournament game. As far as I know all tournament
games are two days to make a move. My opponent hasn't been online for 8 days. Something isn't
right. I would never play a game that was any more than 3 days a move. It doesn't make sense
to me. Thanks

So how many time left to move is shown on your games page?

Why hasn't game timed out?
7 hours are left. I understand about the weekend extra time. My point is this player has had
monday to friday to make a move, he hasn't , but the 2 days a move tournament game hasn't
timed out.

I think he has used a postponement, but one that was a little bit too short...

Why hasn't game.....................
I'm laid off at the moment. I'm on Gameknot most of the day. If this player postponed the games
I would know it. He hasn't.

So how many time was left on, say, Wednesday?

Why hasn't game..................
I don't remember, but If the player hasn't postponed the games and hasn't been online for 8
days, the games should have timed out.

Depends
His opponent may have used a(n) (emergency) postponement
He may have used a(n) (emergency) postponement himself
He may have used conditional moves
Time has been added twice during Saturday night....

If he had had no time left on Wednesday, you should have seen it then already, and something "strange" must have happened there?

Why hasn't game..................
I'm his opponent and I didn't postpone the games. Like I said, he never postponed the games. He
didn't use conditional moves. This particular player has timed out 15 of the 47 games he or she
has played. An unusually high amount. I'm writing this at 9 pm eastern standard time and he or
she has 2 hours left to move. I've been a member of Gameknot awhile now and this scenario is
confusing the heck out of me.

Well...
If there were no special circumstances you should've seen this particular game running out of its last hours every day since Tuesday. Have you? I think not. So I really think a postponement was used somewhere in the meantime.

It is indeed odd. Even if an emergency postponement is triggered, that is normally visible as a postponement, isn't it?

But it looks like an emergency postponement: 5 days would be added after the 2 days per move expire. Since the 2 days for the move were last weekend, one extra day was added then too as heinzkat points out. This weekend no extra day was added as the postponement was running. Adds up to 8 days and that is assuming that larryslade1 had already moved when boblegol did not come on-line anymore.

Looks like emergency postponement kicked in but is not indicated...

But also the history of games for this player is odd, it shows only 10 games of the 47 played. Normally, even if the games are not available anymore, the date and opponents are still shown. Weird...

10 of 47
The only real reason for that I can come up with is that the player has been inactive for a loooong time. I mean to remember that some long-time members have long strings of "0 moves" games.

Why hasn't game...........
Boblegol's games finally timed out sunday night. I think I'm like most players in that I don't take
any satisfaction in getting points from a timed out game, but like most players, I'll take them. As
I mentioned in an earlier post, this player has lost games by timing out an unusually high amount
of times. Thanks to everyone that added his or her two cents to solve my problem.

...
I bet it was an emergency postponement.

It had to be an emergency postponement.

There were also the holidays of Valentines day and President's day as well as two weekends. So perhaps the timing of the normal day added for the weekend allowed it to capture two successive days in addition to the emergency time out. The timing of the added day tends to fluctuate a bit from one weekend to the next.

That would account for 7 days. I'm not sure how you would get to 8 days, unless GK added for Valentines day. I don't think they did that, did they?

Valentine's day was a sunday, so there would be a day added, but just one.

Looks like an emergency postponement to me. Nothing to concern ourselves with.

"Valentine's day was a sunday, so there would be a day added, but just one. "

Well, here in the US, the extra day is added on Saturday (late at night in my time zone, so it's already Sunday in the UK), while Valentine's Day doesn't move. I'm not sure if 2 days were added or not, but I did want to clarify the extra day Saturday/Sunday thing.
