Is there a way to search forums?
I've looked all over the place and am probably staring right at it and missing it.

Thanks

I have looked also
and the only search option to be found here on GK is the advanced player search.

so it will be a page for page search using ctrl F

Advanced search
With advanced search functionality on Google, your search can be limited within a site or domain using keyword "site:"

example:
puzzle endgame knight site:gameknot.com

Disadvantage:
It's not exactly in GK, and indexation could be out of date.

Using Google?
That's just one of those ideas that is so simple yet ingenious!

The only thing is for that to work you'd need to know exactly what you're looking for ('knight fork' would be too general, unless you put Gameknot next to it as well) so it still might not be too helpful for newcomers to Gameknot, and in that case ctrl F might work better...

Of course, you could just post a new topic asking about the thing you're looking for - it'd be simpler!

YES~! Yes, there IS ....
Isn't it GREAT that now there is an actual Google Search box right under the FORUMS MENU , coincidentally I'm sure, being found on the Forums Menu PAGE.

Ah well done GK. And it seems to work really slick. Once again can I pull up postings by member NIK and such immanently convenient deeds. Thank You GK~!!!

For me,the google search bar below the forum is really not needed or wanted, atleast by me.
I thought most people had a google search right above on top within their toolbar? If not its easy to place there. It seems that it takes the GK site alittle longer to load it into the forum page.I see it stating "...loading"on the left side of the google space bar, right before it is actually placed on the page. This slows down my loading speed.Something that is minor, but still takes a few seconds longer, atleast on the first attempted connect. At first,I thought it was my AVG page status analyzer or AVG surf shield, but now I do not believe this to be the case. There is definitely a small slowdown in forum loading speed now, which was NOT the case PRIOR to the google bar being placed at ther bottom in the forum.Since my toolbar has it in already(google)there was no slowdown in the past, but now, suddenly there is...for me.Oh well,i'll live!

TA, the point of the Google search bar is that it only searches from the GK Forums, unlike the search bar of your browser. Use of the 'Site:' parameter is of course the way to do this manually, but not everyone knows about it. I personally find the forum search quite convenient, and it's an easy way to improve the GK Forum software that alone is rather simple.

Yes,I agree with you maca. The google search is a wonderful thing. But occassionally it does slow down the loading speed of my forum page from time to time. Also,I think that the bright bar than suddenly appears on my black backrground is slightly annoying to me,especially in a dark room with my large screen and magnification.Again,my opinion is that regardless of how "good"the google search bar is,it should be a "custom"option similar to any option in your toolbar, browser,or what have you.
Similar to being able to "x"off the chess tactics announcement that was popping up above my games(annoying and something I will never use),but then I was atleast able to "x"it off!I think players should have an option in their "options"to have a google search bar below their forum or NOT below the forum, again, possibly by an "x" remove click or in their options list.
I guess I just believe in being able to customize things the way I see it by needs, wants, desires or usages.Simliar to the way you can customize the way your game list is displayed, time, status ect ect....so,in my opinion the same with the google search bar....which I would remove and others would keep.

TA

Maca...Let me add to my above message, that like others have noted, the google bar below the forum page does NOT necessarily just search from the GK forums as you have stated. You have to be very specific and then you STILL do not always get something from the GK forum...even if you are fairly specific or type in "GK forum" or "site"and your search words. So it DOES reach beyond the confinds of GK and out into cyberspace, many times where you do NOT want to be.I'm sure its a bit better than other search systems like yahoo perhaps(or is it?),but my point is that I prefer to NOT have this on my page if possible. For others who use it,fine.Reminds me of the hot dog and beer vendor at the ball game walking around.I don't eat hot dogs or drink beer. All that vendor accomplishes for me is forcing me to "smell"something I am not fond of or pass beers to people around me who will end up just spilling the beer all over me,not to mention the vendor blocking my view when he leans over to pass a dog in front of me!Same with a google search I will not use...I have my own way of searching and do not desire what do not visually consume through that search method.
So,I prefer to "customize"the way "I"like to do things, which would be to personally dissolve that bar away from my forum page(but as an option). When i change my mind,THEN I would bring it back temporarily.

Yes, we have been testing the Google Custom Search for forums. Sorry about the ads -- they can only be removed in the paid version, but we are still not at all sure that's the solution we are going with. Google is pretty good for many things, but unfortunately so far they are not updating their database as fast as we would like them to. For example, this message thread still can't be found (yet?).

@tactical_abyss, The forum search is currently located only on one page, and the "loading" message only applies to the search itself, so it doesn't slow down the loading of that page, and definitely not any other pages. In other words, when it says "loading", it's the search part that's being downloaded, the page itself already finished loading, and if you don't need the search itself, you can safely ignore it and click on any links, or continue interacting with the page in any way you want.

Thanks GK!But my definition of "loading"is not when I have typed anything in the google search bar or am I actually "searching" by clicking on "search".I have actually seen "loading"OR a delay in the google bar appearing as I first come on the site and go directly to the forum list page.My opinion, right or wrong is that is appears to me to definitely, but momentarily cause a slow down glitch on that page, since it dosen't always appear immediately or at the same time that the forum index list appears.Still it is nothing major, just an observation by me...but perhaps different computer systems give different results?
In any case,I still would prefer the google bar as an option to "appear" or "not appear" on any page. But this is just my preference, not necessarily the other players.I agree, however, that the search bar is a great idea, but would prefer any type of "search"systems as a visual option that can be placed on my page as an option.
Great idea,though either way!

Best,
TA
