Making Master on GK
I know this is a silly question but does GK offer a certificate for anyone that makes master?

Unlike the USCF,GK does not offer a Masters Certificate. It might be a nice idea, however. But
the 2200 and above rating and/or masters certificate would only have any form of validity relative only to the GK game site.It would NOT be officially recognized by the USCF or FIDE which are the "official"sanctioning legal chess organizations in the USA or outside the USA.

I have my USCF masters certificate signed and certified by Joan Dubois way back in 1996.
This is in addition to my USCF lifetime membership gold card and certificate certified by Michael Cavallo in 1997.I am proud of those achievements and have framed them on my wall.

I think ideas like certificates would actually be a good idea, even if they are not recognized beyond the GK site.So would some kinds of rewards, trophies, pendants,a hat or something,if one has achieved either a 2200+rating or has won a series of tournaments, for example.
Rewards always promote better and more serious competitive play, especially if you could
get a nice GK hat, little trophy or some reward! It would be a "goal"to reach. But of course, those things cost money,so the idea might go over like a lead balloon!Or perhaps
might only be available to premium members,if at all.

Remember Pavlov's meat experiment with dogs, right? Rewards are important sometimes!Ha ha!

GK Master or GK Grandmaster...
... Nice ideas - GKM and GKGM for short.

You could have a 'cyber-certificate' that adorns your profile page! If you really wanted to to go nuts with the milestones, why not have some kind of recognition at, say, 1500, 1800, 2000, 2200, call them what you will (2000 might be 'Expert'; 2200 'Candidate Master', say).
I'm not altogether serious about this, but not completely un-serious either. I kinda like the old Soviet system (no doubt still in use) of 'Categorising' players - not unlike the 'kyu' system in Go for 'sub-Dan' players.

Why not?
You're starting to read things like "So-and-so is an 1800 ICC player" ... referring to the Internet Chess Club ... mainly written, of course, by ICC players and instructors.

Why not GKM's and GKGM's? GK could even make a couple of bucks selling the hats!

I like the idea, BUT.......
....you do realize that forums have been buzzing for YEARS about different icons for different levels of membership. What are the odds of a random "GKGM" being more prominently recognized than a Lifetime (or for that matter, even a paying) member? I'm all for bells and whistles on profiles, but experience has convinced me that Gameknot intends to blanket us all in fair annonymity - which is not a bad thing. I've been playing here a long time now, and have seen this site's features improve by leaps and bounds. The one thing that has remained constant though is Gameknot's mantra of "no player is more special than any other".

gameknot_com proposed such "GameKnot titles" in 2003 or so. I cannot retrieve the thread right now.

There is one fishhook...
... The ELO ratings of any given player can be quite volatile - especially in the mid-ranges (1400-2000). What would happen then? I think that if such 'titles' (appellations, nomenclature) were in use, they would have to reflect one's current rating. No 'Master for life' gig here!

Thank you for the responses, please keep 'em coming. Not that I would ever make master, but by some strange chance I did make the title, I would like to know that I could then have access to an official GK certificate - even if I had to pay a small processing fee. Excellence should be recognized, and us chess players - especially those that labor so hard for every 50 points - may want to be recognized.

The only prevention measures that need to be considered are related to cheating and rewarding folks that login, play a few games, and make master. We don't want to cheapen the title in that way, so there would have to be a system whereby either the master level was held for a certain number of games (75 games accumulated above 2200) or having someone not eligible for the title until they've completed a substantial amount of games - like 150. This way you reward the long-term members that work at it and not the fly-by-nighters.

And yes, I love the idea of purchasing a shirt saying GK-Master.

Actually, I like the idea of titles for the class players, too. Maybe not too many, but a few. I mean, why not a title for players that hold a 1500 or greater rating for over 100; a second level could be at the 1800 level; a Candidate Master certificate at the 2000 level and 2200. Again, there would have to be other requirements beyond just making the rating, which would reward short term non-GK believers.

The title doesn't have to be part of the ICON, although it could be featured on the player's profile, perhaps right next to their ranking (percentile).

I believe you CAN get a
GK Master t-shirt! At one time i thought it would be impossible. But I have since realized you only need to ask GK for logo permission, then find the word "Master" online or some existing t-shirt you can cut if off of, for use as a template. Then contact ShirtMasters for a run of 1000 GK Master t-shirts, wait 12 weeks, throw away 999 ... and there you ARE !
}8-P ... or something like that, lol

Hey Gk, Why you so Cheap with Goodies ??!

Why not use the rating floor as one of the criteria for recognition? You won't drop below that level so it makes sense. The other criteria should be paid membership including those within the lifetime category.

Frankly, any paying member who gets 2400 with a floor rating of 2200 should be recognized as a GK master. Also, paying members are much less likely to be fly-by-nighters.

I say this, even though it would exclude me because my rating floor is only 2000. But it would give me incentive to continue improvement in my chess skills. Yet, I have no idea how I'm going to get to 2400. Right now I'm stuck in a rating lull that's lasted a good year.

Yes, I'm still a Gk master. But a rating floor of 2200 would certainly make it more Official because it would never dip below. Right now, I'm awfully close to going under water. One more lost game and I'm wet toast.

Perhaps a 2200 rating floor should be a Life Master !? "Good-Skill" to hanging on. No one fights as hard as a player 2200-2210 ~! ( ... in my experience from the wrong side of that equation. ouch)
