Suggestion for those who cancel games..
I'm really tired of joining available games and immediately finding them cancelled. If it's due to my
rating, perhaps the person setting them up could use a game name such as "1800+ only please"
or something?

I can emphasise with the annoyance that KJH gets from this. Fortunately, it's only happened to me once.

With the min and max rating options, plus the extra options on 'start game' I cannot see any good reason to cancel a game, except for "1,200" players, perhaps.

Many players cancel games simply based upon your first or second move.If I move 1.c4 or 1.b4 or 1.g4 for example, they might have only wanted a 1.e4 or 1.d4 game, even though they posted the game!So they cancel. If I accepted a game as black and my opponent posted a 1.e4 move,i've had opponents cancel because I moved 1....g5 or even 1....c5.
It happens all the time to some players. There are many hidden reasons however,as well.
Some players may have posted several games on GK and possibly other chess sites at the same time. And depending upon how many "bites"they get, they may have to cancel one or two games at random because they have reached their game play "limit" on GK for example.
I once cancelled on an opponent because I forgot to closely read his profile, like I usually do.
He had like 82 wins,no losses,no draws. And he also had 62 time-outs!Hmmmmm....what does this tell you?I'll pass, thank you!Its my fault for forgetting to take my microscope to his profile, but I think I may have been justified for cancelling and escaped with my points still intact!

Let me add....
As to "labelling"your posted games.Yes,that works sometimes but not always. For example,i've posted several games over the last 2 years like when I was white I posted an 1.e4 game and wrote in the title "1....c6 caro-kann only please".I also wrote it in the message part of the game board.Would you believe that this was ignored, and the opponent who accepted my game as black, moved 1...e5?Yes!
Then I cancelled, put the player "temporarily"on my ignore list, and posted the game again.
After the new opponent accepted the game "properly",I removed the other guy "off"the ignore list! The first opponent who simply ignored both typed messages, would fall under my other thread..."gripes against legal chess behavior".No player accepting a posted game has to go by what I wrote in the title AND above and below the game board....but come on now!!!
So,see, even the "abyss" will cancel some opponents when I feel it is justified.

And then
there are others who respond to a challenge by letting it sit there for almost 3 days, and then
declining. Well within his rights of course, but perhaps at a rating of approximately 1800, he was
reluctant to take on someone above his usual opponent average of around 1300.

garos,
How about this reversal....I challenge someone with 3 day time controls.I see that he is online constantly for those 3 days.I also see that he is moving in all the other 10 games he has ongoing. He never accepts my game, never declines the game....just lets the game sit in his game list for 3 days....till the game times-out,not even declining beforehand! Now,I do not wait anymore,so after two and a half days...I feel that he had enough time to make a decision if he wants a game with me or not and I simply cancel the game.
I would NEVER let an opponents game challenge just sit there waiting for the time to run down to zero in my game list.I would atleast decline the game in order for that opponent to challenge someone else. The opponent may have a game "limit" and by atleast showing some etiquette of a decline, then the other player can fill that last game limit with someone else.
It really does not take much decision making to accept or decline a response to 1.e4!

I have challenged 3 opponents in the past year with ratings exceeding 2200 that simply love to not respond, and just let my game challenges clock out over a 3 day period, even though I "know"they are there.Thats within the rules of course, but it is also in the rules for me to add 3 more names to my permanent ignore list as well!Thats "my"form of proper etiquette!

Perhaps it is simply that there are not many of we gentlemen left? " "

garos,
Its really not like its a big deal to me,but I just love to point out things that are legal to do,but not in reality good chess etiquette.I always give a player the benefit of the doubt,however.6 months later I decided to rechallenge the same player(probably dumb, but I did it anyway)that let my game challenge run down to zero time last time. This time I gave the game 4 days.He did the same thing.Instead of cancelling the game,he just let it run down to zero again, like last time after 4 days.I waited to challenge another player because I wanted to play only 8 games and this player that does not cancel was in the eighth position. After 4 days I then challenged another player I wanted to.This new player told me that if I had challeged him the day before,he would have accepted, but he was at his game load too!So I lost the possibility of playing this new opponent due to the first stalling non cancellation. It all runs downhill,I suppose.
I'm use to it,believe it or not,but I suppose I like posting these things to try and give subliminal messages(or behavior modification?)to some readers that may simply decide to never touch that cancellation button like they are "above"doing such dirty things!Ha ha.
