VERY annoying problem with Apple Magic Mouse
I'm sure everyone who owns a magic mouse knows what I'm going to say. When doing "Analyze
this board" the slightest movement on the magic mouse causes the board to jump forward or
back several moves very quickly. Sometimes all the way back to the start of the board. This is
very frustrating because you can get half way through trying something out and the mouse just
destroys everything you've done. Is there a way to stop this happening? I know this isn't really
a gameknot issue but apple don't appear to provide a solution.

Isn't this just a problem with you being new to operating this special kind of mouse?

No, i've had it for around 12 months. The problem is you need to have your finger on top of the
mouse to click it but the slightest movement of that finger causes the scroll function to activate.
A lot of people complain about the same thing in google maps. You can be moving the map
around your suburb and the slightest wrong move and you've zoomed out to look at the entire
world.

iNTERESTING
I am annoyed by a similar occurance with my HP laser-type mouse too [it is just a twin button mouse with a scroll wheel on top, between them] ... but after the thing scrolls on the board, I can just use the wheel to scroll back to where it was. The Apple is different tho? Or I could also click on the Move List to put me back where I was.

Also on mine, it only does the scroll error if I have my finger on the wheel tho start with, and let it accidentally move the wheel. I don't actually have to have a finger on it at all, and then it can not do it to me.

I am trying to imagine what yours could look like. Maybe there will be a picture online somewhere. Sorry I cannot help, but am just interested about it.

I found some Images of the APPLE
Magic Mouse and Mighty Mouse. Now can see why you get the scroll accident. But for some reason it does not keep your Move List ? (when you say, "destroys everything you have done")

That really took me back to the days of my grand father telling me how great the imperial
system was and how
crazy this new fang dangled metric system was. The simple FACT is that many of these
features on the newer
phones are incredibly useful. The simple FACT is that in your day to day life without these
features you will be
wasting time and money. If you are out on the street walking around and need to find a
certain street or place then
how do you find it? Do you ask people? If you are at a shop and see something cool, how do
you show it to your
wife? What if you see some text written somewhere and need to keep a copy of it and don't
have a pen? What if
you're in a shop and want to see if the price of something is really that cheap (you can now
just scan the barcode
on ebay to get a list of prices!!!)? What if you are overseas and want to make cheap calls
back home? These
features are endless and they are useful. I'm sure you'll go through these features one at a
time and tell me how
you don't catch a train, don't use ebay, don't buy stuff, don't listen to music etc but there will
be features there that
ARE useful to you. I think you are thinking of it as a phone which might have extra useless
features. I think of it as
a personal electronic device which has many useful features, one of which is making calls.

As for your phone with the camera button in the wrong place, you simply have a bad camera
phone. This is not an
issue with camera phones in general. My phone does not have a camera button at all. Here's
a challenge for you,
over the next few weeks, think of the situations when you might be able to use some of these
features and what
you had to do because you didn't have these features. How many times would being able to
take a picture be
useful, or being able to find a shop or street address or any of the other features. Try to be
honest about it, I'm
sure if you try hard enough you will conclude you have no use for these features. Examples
are below.

As for the mouse, it's an excellent mouse and works really well. The scroll is so much better
than the old fashioned
clickity wheel. It just has an issue in 2 places, gameknot and google maps which is annoying.

Cheers,
Michael

Here's a few examples
- getting a train timetable to find out when the next train is arriving. Very useful to work out
whether to run or walk
to the platform. (the phone actually works out what station or tramstop you are near!!).
- getting the changes and delays to the timetable.
- having your entire music collection with you everywhere you go
- finding an ATM, McDonalds, hardware store atc
- google maps everywhere you go!! (this just on it's own is enough to make a smart phone
worthwhile and no, a
GPS unit is not a substitute)
- doing banking anywhere you go
- email
- checking the weather (including the radar to see what's coming)
- alarm clock/stopwatch/timer etc
- ebay + paypal
- calendar/reminders
- sport results
- white pages to look up phone numbers
- skype while on holidays overseas is invaluable
- watch movies (this is really useful if you are on a plane)
- see what's on TV

## Hello son, you made it to the library alright?
^^ Sure Dad~!

## Hey great, you know how paranoid I get about underage youngsters gathering at the riverside for a brew.
^^ Oh No, not that.

## Thats good. Btw, the librarian is an old friend; would you mind snapping her pic and sending it on the net now?
^^ Um, uh ... yeah Dad, uh she must be on break right now. Give me 15 minutes, ok?

## Sure son, I understand. No speeding now . . .
## And be sure to buckle your seatbelt~!

Cost is not an issue. You can get internet on your phone on the bottom plan. More internet than you could every reasonably use in a month. You most CERTAINLY don't pay an extra $800 a year for it. You can get plans here for $39 a month that include home internet and mobile and internet on the mobile. And things are expensive here in Australia.

As for not needing it, I think you just don't realise how useful it could be to you. It's like anything, you don't think you need it because you've always got by without it but once you get used to it you wonder how you lived without it. Trust me, if you started using it, you'd be surprised how often it is useful.

As for the issue of patience, it's not always the case were you can wait. Today I was out and about looking at doors for my house. I was at one shop and thought I would go to another. I simply searched for door shops on the phone, found one, and then searched for it's location. In the search was their phone no, I clicked the phone no and the phone rang it. I asked for their closing time. Once I got there I showed them photos from the previous store and took some more photos. I then sent some of those photos to the wife. She phoned and asked some more questions, avoiding a second visit to the store. I did the same thing when trying to find a cheese cake shop the other day. If I was to wait until I was home that would mean driving home and the driving back to where I was.

As for playing blitz chess, no that's not the sort of thing you would do on a phone, you would wait until you are home for that. People who don't use smart phones often think that people would attempt to do everything on the phone they do on the internet. This is not the case, you just do stuff that you need to do while you are out.

As for the speed this is irrelevant. Yes, the phone can be frustrating to use as a browser but you would only use it when you have no other option and only for small tasks like looking up a store.

As for banking online being less secure, I doubt that but if you can find a link that shows otherwise I would be very interested. Again it's not something you would do day to day but it can be useful. I've used it to pay bills on holidays and I once used it in a travel agent when my credit card got declined. I got on the phone and transferred money into the CC and asked the guy to try again, it worked.

As for the camera button, again I don't have a camera button, otherwise you can turn it off.

As for the quality of the photo, well you would only use it when quality is not an issue.

As for the TV guide I would be willing to take that bet. With a paper guide you have to find the right guide (especially difficult if you've got a wife and kids), then lookup the right date, then look for the right time. I just click the "Ice TV" app and it shows me the current date and time. Not that I use this much because I have superseeded TV at my house with a media PC. (the very idea of having to watch a show when the networks want me to seems absolutely ludicrous these days!!!!!!)

BTW, I caught myself slipping into your way of thinking once with regards to mediaPCs. I used to think it was a complete waste of time having a computer connected to the TV and that I didn't need one because I'd always survived without it. Once I gave in and tried it I realised what an absolute gem they are. As I said before the idea of watching a show when the networks want me to just seems crazy these days. And that's not mentioning the fact you have to watch all their commercials!!! Anyway, I promised myself never to get into your way of thinking again. So now I try out all new technology within a reasonable time frame and see if it can be useful to me.

Your buddy is not very savy. If you mms the pic it is probably 25c but if you email the pic it is a fraction of a cent. I just pay a flat monthly fee anyway which includes more calls and data than I ever use in a month. So really sending a pic costs nothing either way. Here in australia you can get monthly home internet + mobile calls + mobile internet for $29 per month. These things are notoriously expensive here because we have a large land and less users so I'm sure it would be cheaper in the US.

As for sending pics, it's not something I use too often but the use does come up. The interesting thing is that there could be 20 different features that are useful on the phone which you don't use all the often but if you use each once a fortnight then that's something useful every day.

And that's not to mention when you are on holidays. I was over in the US and we had a minor disaster and had to change some flights + hotels. I was jumping from app to app, looking up websites, calling people (via skype), transferring money around, looking at maps, changing flights, checking prices, currency exchange, booking new flights, emailing people yada yada. It was 2+ solid hours on the phone using various functions. This was all using the hotel's free wifi so no cost to me at all except $10 skype fees. I don't know what I would have done without it. I guess I would have to have found an internet cafe and then payed through the nose for a pay phone. I was on hold back to OZ for half hour blocks at times which was quite reasonable through skype.

"did I actually laugh!Yes!And i'd do it again."

I'm guess you are still single.

"But i'm really laughing at the "way"people are soooooo programmed into being soooooo helpless without their "toys"".

You seem programmed into your dislike for these useful features.

"Can you imagine todays geneation getting into a time machine and going back to 1965 give or take a few years?Thats not THAT long ago.No cell phone,no remote,3 channels on a black and white TV,no GPS,no ipods,no internet.
They would be so helpless, they would scream and shrivel up and hide in a corner!"

I must say it would be a shock!! Imagine not being able to call someone who was out of the house all day!!!! But it would be the same if you took everyone from 1965 back to the 1930s, can you imagine not having a car!! Or a washing machine!!! Every generation thinks the newer generation has got it easy and doesn't have a clue. While you are laughing at the next generation for falling into a certain way of thinking, you have fallen into your generations way of thinking. Didn't you ever say to yourself that you would never say "in my generation things were different sonny"?

I guess you're not going to read this which is a pity because you've just stated a whole lot of
misinformation based on misreading my post and then left.

For a start mobile internet does NOT cost $20 a month and no one on the planet pays an
*extra* $50 a month for it. It's practically free these days. This appears to be one of your
major points against it but it is plain outright incorrect.

As for the "book thing" you misread my post again. I never said anything about looking up
Ruy Lopez. I was talking about the TV guide. You also missed the bit about speed not being an
issue. If speed is required then you don't use a phone.

As for the analogy about the food pill, that is just complete rubbish. I love my food and
wouldn't take a pill. No offence but everything you've come up with is simply wrong. The cost
is quite simply not $20+ per month, the speed is not an issue, it doesn't cost 25c to send a
pic, I never said anything about looking up chess moves, no one is going to take pills instead
of food, you don't need to turn on your phone, it's on already.
