Rating Inflation on GK (Need Insight)
Look, given my GK rating range (1620-1680) compared to my USCF average over the last year - 1820 - I really shouldn't be concerned about the issue of rating inflation; however, I do have an issue. One of my goals on GK is stay within the Top 5,000 (Welcome to being a GK class player). Well, 6 months ago, the top 5,000 was rated 1682 and over the last half year it has slowly creeped up to 1690. Is this caused by there being more registered players on GK? Is it caused because the system is sweeping off the non-active players quite as fast? Or is it because of rating inflation?

Given that the GK system doesn't have bonus points the way the USCF system does (to inject points back into the system), I would think there would be a natural deflation to the rating system; however, the 8 point rise over 6 months suggest otherwise.

Can I get some feedback on this issue?

The main reason for the inflation is that leaving players leave a long string of timeouts

When an OTB player quits or dies he takes all his rating points with him, which is one reason why the USCF pumps points back into the system. Whereas here (as heinzkat points out), players often give their points back to the system by a long string of timeouts. Now that GK has rating floors this inflation will further increase (although not enough to worry about since games that timeout were already being awarded points based on the player's rating at the start of the game, not at the end). The rating floor will add to inflation only if the timed-out player rejoins GK at a later date.

Quick update
The top 5000 has now moved to 1691. I wonder how high and for how long this trend will continue. Again, that's a 10 point move in about 8 months.

And how many more players are there now than 8 months ago?

The inactive players at the bottom show gains in their rankings which suggests there are slightly fewer active accounts.

As at time of posting, the player at #5000 has had a rating of 1692.

Surely looking at the ratings in terms of proportions is the correct way to do this.

For example, what rating do you need to be at to be in the top 15% of players here at gameknot. Theoretically, that should stay fairly consistent.

As players come and go numerical positions will fluctuate. Imagine if GK only had 5000 members this month and then had 5 000 000 members next month.

As at time of posting, a rating of 1708 was needed to be in the top 15% of active rated players (20+ rated games completed, seen online no more than 90 days ago).

On 11 July 2009, to be in the top 15% of active rated players one needed to have a rating of 1686 or higher. The group of active rated players had 31091 players listed then whereas I see 30902 in the list today.

it doesn't seem like a big deal to me....
We are talking only a few rating points here. Is it really that big of deal? You can win one more game and still be in the top 5000....just study and play your heart out. Get high enough you are not on the borderline and it won't be as big of deal. -Nathan

Who cares about ratings? Let alone online chess ratings....

Who cares about ratings? I dunno...maybe the same people that like seeing their favorite sports team in first place. I never understood people getting so excited about overpaid athletes winning a game or two ... I mean unless you're on the team it's not like you personally won anything.

The TOP 5,000 mark is now 1694, up over 12 points from last year. Again, the question of rating inflation (if these ratings are truly inflated) is a point of inquiry. If membership is relatively stable at GK, then how can there be a 12 point move in such a short time?

The second post in this thread answered the question of why there is rating inflation here.
