Recommending threads
From time to time I come across threads in the forums that I think are especially interesting or helpful. Would it
not be a good idea to allow members to recommend particular threads as being particularly worthwhile?

Could you please elaborate a bit on what do you mean? Recommend how? Send a link to someone? Or something similar to Facebook's "Like" button?

elaboration
I was thinking of a button that would give a "star" to an entire thread, marking it as "interesting" or
"recommended." But based on the lack of response to my post, it appears that my suggestion would not get very
many stars. Thanks for asking anyway.

Silence does not necessarily mean lack of interest. It may mean we don't know what to say...so we don't say anything.

Could also mean that we have nothing nice to say!

....nah, that's not true!

recognizing merit and recommending it
James, it is a good idea.

... besides which
it becomes hard to find something funny to say about things when a thread is simply a great idea ! Maybe so many votes or views or such might put a thread into a GK Hall of Fame of Forum Thread and we call it The Sewing Basket ...

OK Im outa here, off day. But good idea CJ

Good idea in principle...
... but maybe not so easy in practice. In some ways there are already forms of recommendation: the number of posts to that thread; and its currency vs duration.

Every now and then I'll refer back through the archives to distant threads with a view either to add to them, of to remind myseelf of something of interest I read there in the past.

In my view there are a number of threads in the Chess Forum that are of sufficient overall interest that I will add something to them just to keep them going. In particular I have in mind the endgame threads. The hope is that others will pick up on these and add to them.
Cheers,
ion

Thread rating
This is actually a pretty common feature in many on-line Forums. In GK, it would work well together with the concept of rating puzzles in terms of difficulty. The same star graphic could be used.

Gameknot...
... used to run a similar sort of system whereby people voted to retain or remove the thread. This led to a fair bit of rather nasty practices if people misliked the way the discussion was going, or felt like making a nuisance of themselves. You could also vote to move the thread to another forum if it seemed appropriate.

Now that this is no longer the case, I don't miss that feature one bit. Fact was I (and propbably most) would simply forget to put a vote in. So more than occasionally, threads would disappear by default, the 'removers' being more motivated by its presence than the 'retainers' by the not very apparent prospect of its absence.

Here's a thing: if you think a thread deserves a wider readership, alert your buddies to the same. They can tell their buddies etc and so on and so forth...

I like your idea James. There really is a lot of material here in the forums. Something that would help viewers locate useful information or interesting information, I believe, would benefit all.

ION ...
the vote feature is still there, at the top by clicking MOD THE THREAD.

I suppose it would be a very easy thing for GK to add another click there, under Mod The Thread, which would say something like "Recommend the Thread" !? Or even "Save the Thread" and have the ones that get enough votes to Save be placed in a new area that would be for people to read recommended threads there for purpetuity (or till the world ends in December 2012 at least   )

ionadowman, that feature is indeed still very much present. But it doesn't really have much benefit in recommending threads for other people, as the votes can only be viewed from the "MOD THE THREAD" link that is contained within the thread. It's only an attempt of some kind of a peer moderation tool, that hasn't really ever worked just as you said. The only reason why it hasn't caused any trouble recently is that the GK Forums are generally very peaceful these days.

I don't really feel too strongly about this, I just wanted to point out that it's a common feature in many on-line forums. But the GK Forum application is overall so old design that I don't really expect them to implement it, unless they decide to renew the forums completely.

How about that?
I'd so completely forgotten its existence that I thought it had gone. Is that weird, or what? Probably 'what', whence comes to that.

Then I'm back to suggesting the GK equivalent of WOM: word of mouth.

from time to time I come across threads from the Club DELETED by its Founder
in the spirit of the comment starting this thread, from time to time threads surface
from the Endgames Club DELETED by its Founder.

As he suggests at the beginning of this thread,
