All the great Masters
studied each others games. Alekhine studied Capablanca's games before the great match and
Botvinnik studied the games of all his challengers. It takes a lot of work. So there is nothing
wrong with studying game
databases. They contain past and present Master games. There is nothing wrong with playing a
Opening using a regular database either. So long as it is done in conjunction with studying Master
games. The danger in following move for move a database without understanding the theory
behind the moves is self evident.

I rarely use this thread because it could be inaccurate. It has been known to make mistakes, and if one is not careful with this feature, it could cause harm during chess games.

My opinion
I do use the game DB. That's because I'm an OTB player and I think of GK mainly as a tool for improving my OTB play. So on GK, I play openings I don't play OTB, to get familiar with the positions and ideas and to get to know the variations. When I feel I'm familiar enough with some opening, I'll start using it OTB as well. When I play an opening for the first or second time and I meet a move I haven't seen before, I check the DB to see what it has to say about that move, so I could use that as well if my opponent OTB plays that move.
Testing out openings on GK is also a good way of making sure the positions you get into (OTB) suit your style.

this is
exactly what i do.
I use GK as a training tool for my otb games and without doubt I've become stronger by doing so. And yes, using the DB for unfamiliar openings helps to understand them.

Using databases does not substitute for thought...
... as is sometimes alleged. For one thing, you will find in general a lot of options. It is useful to look at the results statistics, but I often find myself looking at the average ratings of who played what move. At that, I will also look at the 'Gameknot' base as well as the 'World' database. And finally, I'll consider whether I even like the move I'm thinking of playing.

I used to follow opening books for correspondence play, but found occasionally I just didn't like the look of what was being suggested. Fact was, my opening book was out of date. on one occasion I deviated, and got a fine game. Later discovered the move I chose was an invention of GM Tigran Petrosian, was vastly superior to the move I rejected, and in fact had become a main line.

So you should always look around to see if there is anything not indicated by the database that might be worth a try. This is especially true if it is a developing move. Bear in mind, though - if a fine looking developing move seems to be ignored by the database, check it doesn't involve a trap...

Earlier in this thread, baronderkilt gave this amusing line

1.e4 Nf6
2.Bc4?! Nxe4 (2...e4 transposes to the Bishop's Opening)
3.Bxf7ch Kxf7

The game might continue:
4.Qh5ch Kg8 (or ...g6)
5.Qd5ch e6
6.Qxe4 ... White has recovered the piece.

It seems much too dangerous for Black to try and hiold the knight with the King!

Where the Game DB was Harmful
inadowman, I am glad that you mentioned looking for a move that was not in a Game DB. This is where the Game DB was inaccurate, made mistakes, and was harmful. It happened in this particular game against delta5ply10, and here is the annotation about that game. gameknot.com

Actually jKarp that move is not reccommended in the database. I think you will probably find the move that is most common is ...e6 not ...e5

James-I did not misread the Game DB, but I misunderstood it. I based it on the highest rating and the highest percentages of wins but not the most amount of finished games. In my case against delta5ply10 it listed the highest rating and the most amount of wins, but only 10-15 games were finished, at most. This means that masters were able to win with unprecedented, moves. However, I recently found out that the database is only helpful if there are at least 20-50 games finished.

Really, because it looks lik there are no games with e5 in the master section and in the gamenkot section the average opponent rating is 1690.

Any way it doesn't matter. As long as it doesn;t happen again things should be all good.
