Slightly different kind of puzzle...
"Step by step method using rook and different piece" (6)

It's possible that no one on here does cryptic crosswords, but if you do and happen to know the
answer to this one, could you fill me in?  

Of course, since its cryptic the answer's most likely nothing to do with chess lol (rook=bird?)...
unless 'castle' can be linked to the first part?

"bridge"

as in building a bridge
using the rook mostly and occasionally the King
to build a bridge,
achieving the (winning) Lucena position in a King, Rook, and Pawn
versus King and Rook endgame.

Personally
I would settle for 'recipe'. This is the 'step by step method' and uses the letters from 'piece'
(thus different) plus 'R' i.e. 'rook'. It is common in these types of crossword to use just the initial
letter from a word such as rook.

i was more thinking of
Enumeration it is the fancy word for counting and that is basis for the recipe
