Computers and Chess
I posted this link on another thread but I found it so interesting and thought provoking that I thought I would post it again. It's an article about the use of computers in contemporary chess.

I sometimes wonder if we have lost as much as we have gained from the use of computers in chess today. Are things going overboard. Chess was designed to be played by man. A vehicle where he could express his creativity. So much of chess nowadays seems to be little more than memory work so an advantage can be realized in the opening (it use to be the opening was concluded by about 7 or 8 moves, now it can run well between 20 and 30 moves in some of the more common openings.

Perhaps we have lost as much as we have gained.

Its interesting and controversial, but ever since the 1980's to the present where stronger computers have surfaced,I have always stressed playing more irregular types of games or "semi"irregular games. In my opinion, alot of those games may indeed,be the last frontier against computers, even if they may be a bit weaker in the very opening. At the very least, some irregular games will open the door a bit more relative to that so called "creativity" as sixofspades wrote above.Openings such as the Ruy Lopez and others can run 30-40 moves or more with deeply analyzed in book moves. But others, such as the Trompowsky Attack and even the Sokolosky Opening can move "out of book"very quickly. It then takes a nice bit of "creativity" if the human opponent is now in unchartered waters and out of book, say,by move 10 or 12 to think of ways to defeat the computer.... in which the computer also has to be "creative"and perhaps less tactical.I think true creativity in humans, given time and the right opponent will always supercede the computer, especially if the style of the game moves quickly away from 30 moves of deep modern theory.

Just my 2 cents worth.
