FIDE President strikes again
From the FIDE website

On June, 14 FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov had a working meeting with Dr. Saleh Al Rashed, Minister of Education of Syria. The parties discussed questions on the implementation of chess in the school curriculum of the country and on the final text of agreement on cooperation between FIDE, the Ministry of Education of the Syrian Arab Republic and Syrian Arab Chess Federation.

Leaves you speechless. What next?

Do you know if Chess is a required course now? Or optional?

To hear such news makes me curious if there are any other countries that require, or even offer Chess, as a course of study?

It would not surprise me if Russia and The Netherlands offered Chess studies, since the club activity is outstanding in both countries, from what I have heard.

Reading the whole text, it looks like it is part of the curriculum - but that doesn't mean it is compulsory

I know that in the USA
A lot of High Schools have clubs and even a league & matches. My own HS did have a club which met after the regular school hours, and was held by a teacher there. But no courses of Chess nor containing Chess.

However ... My friend Mike Dreiger, a strong Expert, taught a Chess course at the local college, Metro Tech, here in Omaha a few years back.

I wonder if St Louis will be offering Chess in college and high school, since that city is making a real push to further Chess there? With Susan Polgar moving to there. And believe I read somewhere that Nakamura also did. And that things are really hopping there now.
