castle - how to?

i am sorry in advance for "joker" question but how to castle? is it because i am not a premium member?

and also do freshmen have access to chat feature - people type me I can't reply.

advice much appreciated

move the king two squares

Then the rook is moved for you. It works for me. If it is not working for you then the move is probably illegal in your particular position on the board. Is the King in check? Is one of the squares between the King and rook under attack?? Has the King or the Rook already moved once? All of these would prevent you from castling.

coopershawk, thanks, neither of the preventive conditions are in place, but i tried moving king two squares but no result. should I also press any button or something. I am under impression that some functions are available only for premium members...

I checked your past and present games on GK.You have 2 past games played...you lost both of those games on a time-out...one in zero moves,the other with one move played.The active ongoing games that you are playing right now are with one move played in one game and zero moves played in the other game.So in all four cases with every game so far that you had or have right now...you could not castle,because castling is impossible in either zero moves or one move played in a game.There has to be no pieces on any of the squares between your King and Rook before you even begin to look at the possibility of castling.

As to messaging someone back or messaging:I believe that you have to be playing for a while before chat is permitted using your message center.Well,i'm not sure about being able to respond if someone responded to you,perhaps you then should be able to message back(not sure)...but I know that a new member that is a non premium member cannot simply start messaging right away.Free members can,however message just like paying members,just not immediately.

I don't understand your problem, but it has nothing to do with whether you are a paying member. All game functions are available to everyone. And there is no special button. Castling works for thousands of people on this site.

Correct,coopershawk.Castling has nothing to do with being a paying member or not,but sending a message does.Perhaps ej is a total beginner and is not aware of how to castle?So its not a "problem"...just not being aware of how castling actually works in any chess game.That is possible,anyway.Like I said,all the games he has played on GK so far indicate that castling was not possible anyway...especially since all his games are no more than one move,so perhaps he simply does not understand the rules of castling to begin with?As to sending a message when you first start out on GK and your a free member,messenging someone has never been possible "immediately",atleast not that I am aware of...because I could not message either the first few weeks I was on GK or it took a few games to be played first...I forget.It did take while to be able to message,however.I forget how long,but it was a few weeks I think.The difference is that a paying member can immediately message someone but a free member cannot "immediately"message someone the first time their account is activated.Yes,free members can message anyone they choose that has not blocked them,but many players have told me that GK waits to give you full messenging access until you have played a few games or some time has elapsed on the free members account.

But lets give ej a chance to explain..he has not responded yet.

Maybe he's talking about a blitz? I recall reading some people complain about the blitz interface being quite buggy a looong time ago - including some castling issues.

Ahhhhh...yes,that is definitely a possibility,that he could not castle in the blitz room.I remembered a few years ago that also happening to me.There was some kind of bug.However,I highly doubt that there is a bug now,since I play everyday and I have noticed nothing in the blitz rooms.Plus,he mentioned nothing about blitz.So we are all just throwing theories around,including me.If you look at his past and present games,you can obviously see that he could not castle in all 4 cases.
Combine this with timing-out already,taking a vacation when he just started,his 1200 opening rating and just my "gut" feeling,I think he is just a total beginner and thinks he can switch his King and Rook around with all his pieces in the middle.And if it was in the blitz room,then there probably was,as mentioned prior,an opponent piece checking one of his open squares.

I guess,we will have to wait to see for sure to see his response again.But I just got done playing blitz here a few minutes ago in several time factors...I tried out the 3 min,5 min and a 10 minute.I also play blitz everyday at different times.....morning,afternoon and evening and have noticed no bug on the days prior to and leading up to the time ej posted his inquiry.

But anything is possible!Its even remotely possible for me to lose once in every 10th blue moon!Ha HA!

Let me add to my above post,that in regards to blitz,I have always made past suggestions that we have the capability of having "observer" games in the blitz rooms.Some blitz sites do have this feature.This way you can tune in to a live blitz game being played by whoever you choose.
It would definitely prove not only interesting,but educational.And this would also be a way to prove a "bug" in blitz(like in castling).....by actually seeing someone trying to castle and could not.But then "observe"in real time if the players open square was being checked by another piece,ect,ect.Yes,that is one feature I would love to see implemented,but perhaps it would use up too many computer resources on GK,I do not know.

first of all thank you for replies, it is delightful to receive fast ones, sometimes the request or question could stay untoucched for great while on some forums, but it's definitly not the case here ))))

i am absolute beginner, and yes - I was referring to blitz, should've or course mentioned that at the beginning.

I just enjoy playing couple of blitz games after work )) I will try castling one more time during future games and report afterwards to honourable community
