GK elo Vs FIDE eloI'd like to know the relationship of GK elo with regard to FIDE elo. Who is stronger, a player that has x elo at GK or a player who has the same x elo at FIDE ? I never engaged in any regional or national competitions against players who have FIDE rating. That's why I can't tell. Examining games.. May be, but one is not sure. So for players who met or even have FIDE elo rating can tell us about this question. Of course your answer yields itself on the hypothesis that your GK elo is somewhat stabilizing..the same goes for your FIDE elo if you have or the FIDE elo of those whom you played with. |

@ccmcacollisterGK players and FIDE players do develop two different types of performance. Since GK is a per- correspondance play where the train of thought can be lost but the mental energy is always revived, while the FIDE players do play realtime games with continuous concentration. Well I just asked the question because I am in the stage of deciding whether to enter or not into the professional field and engage in tournaments and clubs etc. |

FIDE vs GK Elo ratingsConsider this. Any team member in GK has two ratings - and overall one, and one applying to the player's team games. The two are not altogether independent. If you joined a team the moment you joined GK, and played team games exclusively against similarly placed opponents, your team and overall ratings would be the same (Bear in mind teams as a whole also have ratings. I'm not referring to those). But individuals' team ratings are different, and their overall ratings might well have advanced well beyond their provisional rating by the time they get a provisional 1200 team rating, having after several months joined a team. So on GK team ratings are likely to have much smaller numbers than overall ratings. Whether they will eventually equalise is very doubtful. It is possible that the gap will narrow over time, but it would be hard to say that that wasn't due to a tendency for the system to "appreciate" (i.e. ratings overall to creep upwards). Maybe more members joining teams might have an "appreciatory" effect. I think it also has to be borne in mind that the magnitudes of the ratings have no meaning - none at all. It is where one's rating sits in relation to others that is meaningful. My point is, though, that the team and overall GK rating systems are not completely independent (since team games go towards overall rating as well) yet yield quite different numbers. The two ratings don't really bear comparison. If these two semi-dependant rating systems (GK-team and GK-overall) don't bear meaningful comparison, how much less does the GK and the FIDE Elo systems? Having said that, it seems that a good many of the top players on GK are themselves at Master level (FM and IM) in either OTB (over the board) or CC (correspondence chess) play. I don't know whether any GMs have subscribed to this site... Cheers, Ion |

So I thing there is a significant similarity between them. |

There are so many differences in the circumstances between GK and FIDE OTB (different time control, different fairness control, different fighting spirit) that affects a player's rating, but these differences imo only contribute a small portion to the phenomenon under question... So, what is the major contributor? I will give you a simple logic for you to draw your own conclusion... First, we must assume that both FIDE and GK employ similar rating system (same formula): New Rating = Old Rating + K (Actual Score - Expected Score). What does the above formula tell you? It tells you that your rating is your strength relative to those players in the same population. So if you are 1800 on GK, it doesn't mean that you are stronger than someone with 1200 rating on KG. So then what? Now, let's create our two fictitious populations. Population A has players with IQ from 50 to 90 and population B has players with IQ from 140 to 190. In both populations you will see ratings from around may be 1000 to 2600. Are the top players from population A (rated 2600) grandmasters? If 1500 player from population A is put into population B, what new rating do you expect he will have? 1000? 2100? If 1500 player from population B is put into population A, what new rating do you expect he will have? 2600? 1100? So the relative strength of the population does matter. Now why do you think I believe that vekiv 's GK rating will sooner or later be higher than GK rating? Because I think the relative strength of players at vekiv 's "true rating" is stronger in FIDE OTB than in GK. Is it logical that FIDE population is stronger than GK? Yes, why would a FIDE player like vekiv play here on GK? Even if he would, he would not play as good as he would on OTB. |

OTB games, everyone pretty much is treating the game the same, and the field is pretty level. There are many approaches to CC games. To some, a CC game is an end in its self, and they treat them very seriously. Others don't take CC games so seriously, and maybe make moves to pass the time away while doing something else. Some consider it only as another way to prepare for OTB games. They will use cc games to experiment or learn new openings. Some use chess books, data bases and spend 50 hours or more on a move. Some use it as a way to practice for OTB games, they don't move pieces on an analysis or real board, they may limit themselves to 15 minutes, and don't consult books or data bases. Some play just a few games at a time, while others may play well over a 100 CC games at a time. OTB players are generally happy to find a good practical move, or play a move simply because they find it interesting, while a die hard CC player is looking for perfection or the ultimate truth. |
