Creativity in openings...
We've got an endgame thread, how about an openings thread?

Really I just wanted to show off this game, but I'm interested to see other games which were won in the opening.

1. e4 c5
2. Nf3 d6
3. d4 cxd4
4. Nxd4 Nf6
5. Nc3 a5
6. Bb5+ Bd7
7. O-O Bxb5
8. Ncxb5 Nxe4
9. Re1 Nc5

So, white to move and win right here...

I'm not sure if you're seeing a checkmate here...
but I do see an attack that can win the queen here, with 10.Nf5!, - three pieces attacking a
pawn that is only defended once (the e-pawn is pinned) play could continue 10...e6 11.Nfxd6+
Bxd6 12.Nxe6+ Kd7 13.Nxf7+, winning the queen

if Black tries 10...Kd7 11.Bf4! (there's no saving the d-pawn now) 11...[B moves] 12.Nfxd6 exd6
13.Nxd6 Bxd6 14.Qxd6+ Kc8 15.Qxc5+ Nc6 16. Rad1+!, and Black's queen can't escape because
it's the only piece stopping Qf5 mate

one last variation... 10.Nf5! Kd7 11.Bd4 e6 12.Nfxd6 Bxd6 13.Qxd6+ Ke8 14.Nxc7! Qxc7 15.Qxc7

There's no mate here, but it is indeed the queen that is the target. My opponent resigned after I made my next move.

You're actually very close indeed, and I thought you had found an alternative line, but it seems in your line that black has an escape that will cost him position but not material.

10. Nc5 e6
11. Nbxd6+... black does not have to move his king here...
11... Bxd6
12. Nxd6+... and now he has to move his king, but e7 and f8 are available now, and so the queen is safe.

The solution is similar, though, and for sure we are taking advantage of the pinned pawn and the trapped king. Just don't allow black time to escape! Be more assertive with your first move!

Here's the fen for the position above, by the way, I forgot to put it in the original post.

Interesting game. Even with Ke7 tho ...
10. Nc5 e6
11. Nbxd6+... black does not have to move his king here...
11... Bxd6
12. Nxd6+... and now he has to move his king, but e7 and f8 are available now, and so the queen is safe.

12. ...Ke7 has some risk tho and nto without its hazards ....

13. Nf5+ Kf6 ......Ke8 14.Ng7+ (14...Kf8? 15.Bh6) Ke7 etc
14. Qf3 exf5?
15. Qc3+ Kg6
16. Qg3+ Kf6
17. Bg5+ 1-0

oh ...
re 17.Bg5+ Kg6 18.Bxd8+ Kh 19.Qg5#

Not saying I like the idea of 14...exf5 tho. The idea of 15.N-move discovered+ may look worse than it is at first. But seem to be some elements to look into adding such as h4, Nh6+, g4, Bg5 etc.

On my analysis I have put 10. Nc5, of course this is an error, I mean 10. Nf5...

It seems to me that 10. Nf5 is a powerful move only if black blunders, I believe with accurate play by black he should be able to avoid losing anything more than a pawn, at least in the next ten moves or so. And since I abandoned a pawn for positional advantage, it's not the end of the world for black at all.

How about 10... e5

While black will be forced to move his king, so he's not looking good, but there doesn't seem to be a way to force material back just yet.

Or better still 10... Ne6!

I think that keeps tidies black's position up nicely and he holds the pawn.

ion, you got the rook and king on the wrong squares, somehow!

6. Rg1?!

Quite right...
... That's the second time I've done that...

... and I think I now know why...

Recent game
A played a recent game in which after just 15 moves, my opponent was paralyzed and had to give up.

1. d4 Nf6
2. f3 c5
3. Bg5 cxd4
4. Bxf6 gxf6
5. Qxd4 Nc6
6. Qc3 e5
7. a3 d5
8. Nd2 d4
9. Qd3 Qb6
10. b3 Be6
11. Nc4 Qc5
12. Nd2 Bh6
13. Ne4 Qa5+
14. Kd1 Ke7
15. g4

The winning move isn't that difficult to spot but the way the whole Black army coordinates is very inspiring.

15...Nb5 and either the queen is lost or it is mate in 1. Nice game!   White payed the price for
only pushing pawns on the flanks and not trying to occupy or attack the center.

Still thinking about Tugger's game...
Could it be Bb4? I'm sorry, I'm just stabbing in the dark right now...

and a good game from nyctalop - nicely done!

x-machine, Bb4 is not legal I'm afraid, it's difficult to see what move you mean.

I think it's been up long enough, and I have had one or two private messages with the correct answer, so time to share it...

10. Nc6!

Black's queen has no escape, she's falling in return for the two knights.

10... Nxc6 (or indeed bxc6)
11. Nxd6+ Kd7
12. Nxb7+ (or Nxf7+ if we prefer, though I would opt to weaken the queenside further if black plays on)

10... Qb6
11. Nxd6+ Kd7
12. Nc4+

Black resigned after 10. Nc6!

I would too against any opponent, this move alone should be sufficient proof that he is capable of finsihing the job without difficulty.

If we look at black's opening, he only really makes one questionable move...

5... a5?!

My opponent left a comment afterwards saying it was an error, he intended the regular 5... a6, but it stands to reason that this very trap would still work if black plays 5... g6 (or a variation of this, such as 2... g6 and 5... d6), a much more likely position that my one. Certainly worth keeping an eye out for, that's for sure.

nyctalop

Nice game! I'm not overly impressed with white's opening strategy, but I must say you took advantage in style. I really don't like 6. Qc3, it's a terrible square for the queen at this stage of the game, both his knights are blocked from developing to their strongest squares now. His opening was far too weak against a player of your standard, I'm not surprised in the least he found himself hopelessly lost after 15 moves.

I'm gonna see if I can find a game I played on here against my brother, it was a quick and unusual game. He's my older brother, so this win is very sweet, though I already knew he was hopelessly out of his depth playing me on here where I can analyse!

The winning move is
Nb4.

Very nice cooperation amongst the black pieces.

Of course, Nb4, not Nb5. Perspective error.

Actually, I has thinking Bf4 here... but I can see where you're coming from with your move, it's a
nice combination... but what if Black played Nxc6?
