It's a very unusual circumstance. I'm sure the organizers will understand the extraordinary conditions that are preventing fast travel.

Bulgarians refuse postponement
reports ChessVibes. www.chessvibes.com
But in the letter from the Bulgarian chess federation, they consider a one day postponement of the opening game:

3. The possibility to postpone the first game of the match for one day to Saturday April 24 need to be discussed with the Chairman of Organizing Committee– Prime Minister of Bulgaria Mr. Boyko Borissov. This will take some time. We will inform you regarding our decision not later than latest afternoon of 20 April /Tuesday/

Wouldn't it be D-Lightful ...
if Mr Danilov were successfully the President of FIDE right now. I bet he could straighten out those home-boys and tell them to knock-off the funny business, or he would Rule that Anand just stay home and keep his WC Title right there with him, until someone else more agreeable than the Topalov gang et al comes along to be Challenger ~!!

Or Wait ... Isn't Mr Danilov still Manager for Topalov ??! WHY hasn't he straightened this all out forthwith~!? . . . . . " L - O - L (with cynical sneer & roll of eyes, arms upward throw toward the heavens, to express & implore Answer Seeking ) "

This is crazy. They admit they were aware of his situation before the 18th, but did not hear it directly from Anand...within the required time according to the contract. So they are splitting hairs and pretending to be reasonable.

Perhaps it is not possible to delay the press conference, but they certainly can delay the first game. They even stated they would delay it 1 day but not the 3 requested. Given the gravity of the circumstance beyond the control of Anand, it behooves them to accommodate his reasonable request as best that they can. They are simply being stubborn at this point.

They complain of pressure being placed upon them to accommodate Anand. Well duh!! It's the highly unusual situation that screams for flexibility.

...
I agree. The circumstances are quite exceptional and the organizers should be more considerate. Anand has arrived in Sofia after a 40 hour drive by bus: www.chessvibes.com

Lord of the Rings
That is what Anand used as preparation for the coming WCC match!
ChessBase has a report of the 40 hours trip of Anand from Frankfurt to Sofia: www.chessbase.com
Good luck to Vishy!

Arggggh
That awful FIDE, that sneaky Anand. First a pp request to make the home team look picksnickity, he now gains the sympathy vote with a mere 40 hour bus trip. (India is Huge you know, probably does that on the way to work!?). All this trickery from Anand. But on the otherhand (Mr Danilov) take note ... Even God has a thing about Bulgarian Chess players you know ... just ask Nigel Short
.... Even if Sophia IS a lovely place, there are still things you just cannot do. Besides, you now have more time to bug the WC WC's, righto?

PS ...
The above is neither political, ethnical, nor religious in intent; rather largely springs from a Quote made by GM Nigel Short ... and we all know he would Never venture an opinion on such without a subpeona. I believe it was Even God adores the Bulgarians~!
Or was it ... Even God somewhat less than loves the Bulgarians !?
Well you just have to look up the news round about the last time Nigel beat a Bulgarian in a game surrounded with controversy ... lol (yeah, what you are thinking? Thats what I said too

There is a God. And he is not Bulgarian!
That was Short's game against Cheparinov (Topalov's second and also managed by Danailov) in Wijk aan Zee 2008. Cheparinov had refused to shake Short's hand (going back to Short statements related to toiletgate I believe) and the arbiter gave the win to Short. In appeal Cheparinov had to apologize but the game was to be replayed.

After Short scored a nice win against Cheparinov, he said "There is a God. And he is not Bulgarian!".

You can see that game and the story surrounding it here www.chessbase.com

Tie in the seventh game Anand up 4 to 3.

It's interesting that Anand is relying on the Catalan Opening as white so much. The last time I used it I got spanked. I'll have to study up on it through an advanced analysis of this series.

Indeed, congratulations to Anand. Topalov is to be commended for his fighting spirit - what a match this was!
