Create diagrams from pgn
Hi everybody,

I was looking for some way to generate diagrams (images) after each move in a game in pgn format.
The idea is to scroll through them on my cell phone.
First I made printscreens from Arena after each move. That worked but was tedious.
Then I found epd2diag utility. It made the process much faster but quality of diagrams was not as good.
Does anybody know of better ways to accomplish this? Does any commercial software (ChessBase,Fritz) has this option?
Ideally I am looking for a one-click solution pgn->diagrams.

I wonder . . .
if it might be something that would write a FEN from each diagram move, then print screen it !? Hope someone comes up with something for you, this sounds interesting. G/L

BTW, you sound much more software knowledgeable then me ... Might you know something about the recognition software I am looking for in my thread?

Thanks for your reply, baronderkilt.

Actually it doesn't have to go via FEN. For example in Arena which I use you can export any position as JPEG file, the problem is that you have to go through whole game manually - that's lots of actions with mouse and keyboard.

Regarding your question, unfortunately I don't know of such software...

Print screen and paint software seem to work pretty well and you can draw lots of pretty arrows and circles etc. on your diagram.

ECTool
I've found a software called ECTool.
ECTool is an utility to help with the management of playing correspondence or email chess.
Able to import a game from a PGN file and export all diagrams to GIF files in one click by the menu "Tools", "Save diagram to Gif file", "Whole game".
The files are sized 304x304 and it looks pretty good.
This soft is down-loadable here:
webs.ono.com
Interface is a little bit confusing, however there is a help file.
Registration as user FREEWARE VERSION is possible as it's indicated on the web page.
It seems to allow use of export functionality without restriction.

elpafio,
The ECTool looks interesting, however,it appears from the windows list on that site that it won't work with my system.I have windows Vista.

With both Fritz and chess base you can import and export FEN and print diagrams.

...
But can you convert the whole game into a set of diagrams with a single press of a button in these programs? That was the original request from uri65

I don't think his original question was to convert a whole game into a set of diagrams with a single press of a button. I think he wanted convert each move as it was played into a diagram, so he could view the current positions of all games on his cell phone. Maybe uri65 could clarify.

Create diagrams from pgn
elpafio,
Thank you a lot - ECTool is exactly what I was looking for! Another software I found is epd2diag, however ECTool creates diagrams of better quality. Thank you!

blake78613,
Thanks for posting. Indeed I was looking for a one-click solution to convert a whole game into diagrams representing positions after each move.

So now I have a small collection of games and tactical puzzles on my cell phone. It's quite basic Nokia so I couldn't install any real chess software like you can do on smartphone. But with this diagrams it becomes a wonderful training tool - it's always with me and whenever I have couple of minutes I can scroll through them. Nice!

it would be great if one can also
click a box for each move and have just those make diagrams? Like when we do a Delete here on our msg queue
