Earthquake in New Zealand
Hi everyone!

I know this is not related to the forum, but a regular poster on this forum, Ionadowman, is from Christchurch, New Zealand. There has been a terrible earthquake in New Zealand and I hope he is not one of the casualties.

Yes, Ion lives in Christchurch, I think, I hope he’s OK.

It says...
His last time online was 1 hour 10 mins ago... But there's a good chance that that's because the
internet was knocked out, so I'm crossing my fingers on it being that...

It's not the first time this has happened too... Christchurch is really getting hit by these
earthquakes!

I meant 1 day 10 mins on my last post...

I hope he is OK too.

There are reports of at least 75 deaths and many injuries. They're still digging people out of the rubble. 80% of the entire city is without water. At this point, it is not likely that he has easy access to the internet.

98 people now confirmed dead
Hi everyone!

This is the sad news so far which I heard this morning and they are losing hope of finding survivors and there are about 200 more missing people. More and more rescue and recovery teams are moving into the area.

I also fear for Ion,s health he just timed out his first game..

not that that tells us much because playing chess is the least of your concerns wen you are in the centre of such a disaster... but i wish he would .

Courtesy Postponement
Hi everyone!

Apparently, after hearing about the earthquake in NZ, Gameknot decided to grant Ion a courtesy postponement of 10 days. Many thanks to Gameknot! Hopefully by the end of that time we will know Ion's fate.

ION IS ALIVE AND WELL!
Hi everyone!

Just to let you know that Coach Ion and his family survived the quake. I got in touch with him today by phone. Power is only just being restored in Christchurch. They have been living on barbeque food and bottled water since the quake. Ion will return to gameknot when he can.

I am so relieved.

Phew...
I'm relieved too!   glad he made it okay!

Let's hope that those are the end of the quakes over there, it's been hit bad enough as it is...

Thank you, guys...
... and thank you Joanne, for your concern and good wishes.

Actually, I responded to this forum yesterday and forgot to post it! Not the first time I've done that.

The whole gig has been a bit more exciting than I would have liked, but we were well enough prepared and got through a whole deal more lightly than did many others. Our relief is alloyed with sadness, though, as so much will have been lost: lives (one of the first named was a slight acquaintance of ours); property (so many houses destroyed, and even stretched of land that might have to be left unbuilt upon); livelihoods (though the Governement has come in to bat on this one, offering relief to employers and workers); sense of security. It is possibly this last that in many respects is the greatest loss of all. What will be te fate of Christchurch? The rebuilding will take years, and that is supposing that rebuilders figure the risk is low enough.

Having said that, this disaster has brought out the best - and occasionally the worst - in people. In some ways it has for the moment imbued a sense of community. The many acts of generosity and courage have rightly been more pronounced than those of pusillanimity and meanness.

My thanks also go to Gameknot, for holding over my remaining games. It will be a little while before I feel able to look at my games (please bear with me), and we are experiencing power outages from time to time.

Oh, the Black Knight that went AWOL from my magnetic set (the one I keep beside this machine), was finally apprehended yesterday. He seems to have jumped into the middle drawer of the filing cabinet, after it had fallen against the table upon which the chessboard and pieces were sitting. Capricious things, earthquakes...
Cheers,
Ion

After all this time...
... some very nasty tremors today - after not much ... action ... over the last several weeks and months, a sudden hefty shake (5.8) and a swarm of quakes that included a 6.0 chappy that (once again). Still experiencing some minor aftershocks from time to time.

No significant damage: few injuries, and a number of already dodgy structures came down. After a fairly quiescent period of weeks, one might have thought we were coming to the end of all the excitement, but I've been having the uneasy feeling we haven't yet seen the tail of this beast...

At any rate, still hanging in.
Cheers,
Ion A. Dowman
