Under rated juniors
Okay so this thread can also be about people who are under rated in general, but I think juniors in paticular are the main culprits. What are your thoughts about people who have ratings far below thier actualy level? I only started playing chess a bit over a year ago when I was 15 and I'm now 16, so my rating OTB is in the 900s. I think I am probably better than that but when I first started I made a few mistakes in games I should have won. Basically I think I am improving so fast my rating can't keep up. When I am meant to play some kid whos say about 9 who might have a fairly low rating I feel slightly uneasy because I know that they might be equal to say 1800. So my question is how do you feel about people who play way beyond thier rating? Have you played many in your chess career? Do you perhaps think theyhave an advantage in tournaments?

generally
I believe that people will catch up to their current rank pretty quickly. For instance, I timed out in many games due to a major computer issue. It hasn't taken me too long to get back to 1500. When you are better than your rank, you generally win games until you return to previous rank. So I don't concern myself. Unless, its timeouts or mismanaging games, I don't see why there is a concern.

I think it's a bit different online, I was mainly talking about OTB play but I think what you say is still fairly accurate, people should cacth up to the corret appropriate rating after a short time. I just think it takes a bit longer playing OTB and can be a bit of apain fpr peopl in tournaments and such.

If you belong to a chess club that regularly hosts rated quads or other rated local events you can reach you appropriate rating pretty quick.

In OTB, I have observed that talented junior players regularly perform better than their rating would suggest. Of course, "rising stars" like this often play quite a few tournaments as well, so their rating shouldn't be lagging behind too badly. But I still tend to exercise some caution whenever judging junior players based on their ratings, and I think there are a lot of others who do this as well. Regards, MaCa.
