What would you do?

This was a game against a player on chess.com where I was Black. I had just played f4-f3 since
taking on e3 wouldn't keep the pawn after Nb3-Nc2. With f3, I hoped to put pressure on White.

White blundered and played gxf3??, which quickly lead to mate after the bishop recapture -
which was a shame since it was turning out to be an interesting game! If you were White, what
would you play in this position?

I have a few plans for white but no time for any of them because of the dual threats of ...fxg2+ and ...Bd6. I
would like to post my bishop on g3
but too slow... try to trade it for blacks dark squared bishop via Bc1-a3 still to slow while Bf1 still does nothing
to stop ...Bd6 and whenever I play g3 ...h4 is dangerous.

No defence...
Seems exegesis is correct: White is already busted.

1.g3 won't do on account of 1...f2.

1.Rg1 is the only halfway decent defence I could come up with, but after 1...Bd6 there is no good defence against the mate:

[a] 2.g3 f2
3.Na3 (there's absolutely nothing better)
3...Bf3ch! (though 3...fxg1=Qch is good enough)
4.Rg2 h4 and White will quickly succumb to Black's all-out attack.

[b] 2.Qf4 (This is the only other defence against mate. Of course, it is hopeless.)
2...Rxf4 ('nuff said, really; White has only a rook and knight versus Queen and two pawns - the equivalent of a minor piece to the bad; and Black still has a strong attack hammering at the castle gates).

Interesting!
I was hoping that I had a strong attack but I didn't realise that it was completely winning for
me!

I had been thinking that I was on the losing end as well at the start of the game - castled on
the opposite side, got immediate pressure then had to sac a piece for two pawns to relieve
that pressure...

In fact, if anyone happens to be interested here's the full game!

1.f4 d5
2.Nf3 Nc6
3.e3 Bg4
4.d4 Nf6
5.c3 e6
6.Bd3 Be7
7.Nbd2 Qd6
8.O-O O-O-O
9.Qa4 h5
10.Ne5 Rdf8
11.b4 Nd7
12.b5 Ncxe5
13.fxe5 Nxe5
14.dxe5 Qxe5
15.Nb1 Bc5
16.Re1 f5
17.Bd2 f4
18.Kh1 f3
19.gxf3 Bxf3+

what would i play :)
Ok black is winning that is quit clear.

But what would i play as white after 18...f3 ?
I would play 19. Bf1

Not winning at all but it narrows blacks options a little. ( resign no way )

So i like to take the test here on the forum to see if white has a small chance
X-Machine what is your move after 19. Bf1 ?

We play this until checkmate or draw

In the above line...
... and the lines beginning 19...fxg2ch, followed by ...Bd6, White has only one defence: Qf4, giving up the Major Exchange: Queen for Rook. There is however, a resource for Black that makes this defence very costly for White - that is to say, he gets less than a rook for the Queen. See if you can find it!

Mind you, even after, say, 19.Bf1 fxg2ch 20.Bxg2 Bd6 21.Qf4 Rxf4 22.exf4 Qf6 Black ought to win, as I remarked in Line [b] in my previous posting. But this hidden resource I mention is even better - much better!
Cheers,
Ion

19.Bf1 fxg2+ 20.Bxg2 g5! And there is no defence to ...Bd6.

Hmm....
I'll be honest, I wouldn't have considered the above line there - I was thinking about Bd6
followed by f2...

The above line wins but I'd like to see how Freddy would react to the moves I just suggested
baronderkilt
09-Aug-11, 08:19

Well, lets see ...
That puts us at +3 for white in the Freddie lines and about +5 overall !?

Dont read on, if you cant handle a bit of the Freakishly Weird but True, & More than a little morose.

This is starting to remind me of this bookstore game I played with an acquaintance... Not a frequent tournament player, my opponent had never won in our few games. Which is as it should be since I was about 350 elo higher. But this game was different and I lost to a brilliancy. But he wanted to be Sure ... and look at every possible resource I might have. And then when all failed, wanted to Back-Up the game to see at what point i might survive. Needless to say we end up backing it close to a dozen moves. And after several hours of it, I decide this probably is the most brilliantly forcing game I've ever seen; the game of a lifetime. He went home and died that night.

I don't make this stuff up folks. Then the other weird part . . .
It was a Caro-Kann ???!

And yes i know white is busted and that there is no winning the game. But playing this out in this way is a good learning experience.

Wow!
That's definitely freakishly weird - I'd say downright creepy, almost!

Oh, and @ Ion...I'm a little confused - do you mean Black gets more than a rook for a queen? At
any rate, I'll look into it!

How do you spell that German 'intermediate move' again? Zwischenzug?

Anyway - prevents g3 after the queen retreat and though my pawn becomes passed I don't
know whether I could protect it or not
ionadowman

Craig...
That is one eerie story. Lots of eer, there. Sometimes the candle burns its brightest just before it gutters out...

x-machine: It's not that Black gets more than a Queen for the Rook, but that Black pays less than the Rook for the Queen. exegesis had the right of it. Check out his last posting.

Ion
