- - The Annotation Project - -
Recently i have started a tournament with as main goal for the players to learn how to play in tricky situations in a ultra sharp line..

gameknot.com < Tournament page

The initial position is very sharp and brought to my attention by enasab
I played in a high lvl tournament using this opening.

1. e4 c5
2. f4 d5
3. Nf3 dxe4
4. Ng5 Nf6
5. Bc4 Bg4
6. Qxg4 Nxg4

A lot can be learned from the games played.. specially for 1200 to 1900 players
So here is a list of already played and annotated games.

>> some comment quotes to show how interesting this mini tour actually is. <<

> Quote > ionadowman
See how much time White has lost going after the h8-rook. Black's game is looking very good now. I've not often seen such volatile games as this Grand Prix Attack gambit line seems to produce. Two moves ago I felt sure that White had the better of it (slightly).

> Quote > rjacobs
When I won this game I didn't think it was anything remarkable but as the project has advanced, I think maybe it is. In one of my current games, Black has bleated that he's on a hiding to nothing, so I'm offering this game up as evidence that there is hope for Black

> Quote > iondowman
This is one of the intriguing aspects of this line: how to keep up the pressure without giving Black the chance to burst out of his chains.

> quote > Nuntar
Interesting that White chooses not to take the rook. Of course, White's knights are powerful attacking pieces in this wild line, but he'll have to do something to justify his material deficit eventually.

> quote > jstevens
After the first two matches I see some light at the end of a very dark tunnel!

> Quote > ionadowman
Now that both sides have their forces fully deployed it is hard to see who might have the advantage now. The position is complicated and quite obscure.

I think this opening is a great learning experience for a variety of reasons. I feel that there are a multitude of complex tactical, positional, and strategic situations all taking place at once. I've been working on improving my tactics as I don't feel proficient in this area and so this tourney is just what I need.

Of course, I just hung a Knight in a different tourney.

Me vs Me
With the Dena MacKenzie lecture fresh in my mind ( the inventor of this particular opening) and the lessons learnt from previous games.

I set up a real board and played myself.. The first moves are common terrain so that was easy. but after that it becomes harder and harder in the tactical minefield. A nightmare and a dream for me and me.. (thnx Ion)

Black has to wait until white steps over the line and forks trades or do anything that is not trying to bind my black pieces..
knowing myself and the rules it proved to be very hard to win with black. also i still think black should win, because white can as easily make mistakes as black and black only job is to keep the king safe and try to trade of a bishop and a knight.

side note : i have contacted Mr Mackenzie about these annotated games. and i hope he wil show up and give some comments.

Joanne -
Since 2-thirds of the 3 points you have dropped in the tournament so far have been against the top "seed" (who, recall, outranks you by over 400 ELO), I think you are doing quite well. Except against easy19, undefeated, withal.

Your handling of this maniac opening is becoming more assured, at that. The last couple of games have been very good and confident wins. And I think they have told us something more about this line.

I rather think that as you complete more games, you will start roaring up the crosstable to sit comfortably second behind easy19.

No worries, eh?

Opening Nomenclature -
- It has been suggested to me that as the line we are exploring in this thread is a particularly violent variation of the Grand Prix Attack, that the appellation "Demolition Derby Attack" might be apt.

What do you think?

Impact on style...
One of the intriguing aspects emerging from this MT is each individual's results with the Black and the White pieces. It seems (though it is still fairly early days) that some players prefer the gamble, the free-wheeling cut-and-thrust of playing the White pieces; others prefer the patient weathering of the storm before capitalizing on the extra material.

So far, easy19 has just been too strong, not unexpected given the rating differences, and looks to complete a picket fence. Coming up the table, jstevens1 might also be too much for most of the opposition (easy19 excepted), also. Her 9 points so far are evenly split (4.5-4.5) between wins with White and Black.

It is among the other players that the interest lies. A couple seem to have taken to the White side, rather. Having almost completed his tournament, untateve has done rather better with White (6 wins) than Black (4.5) with one of each to finish. At the other end of the table, all 3 points scored by thebishop1000 have been with the White pieces.

Contrast these results with those of yoshark, scalawag and graderguy. The only one to complete the tournament so far, 6 of yoshark's 9.5 points have come from the Black pieces! All the points of the other two - admittedly they completed fewer games that the others - have also been with Black. Of these latter, such findings at this point are far from statistically conclusive, and at the end of the tournament the picture might well have changed.

How statistically significant are such results in general? I don't know, for sure. But maybe there is a good deal more of subjectivity, the influence of style, approach to the game, state of mind, personal likes and dislikes than we would like to admit.

Fascinating, though...

Ion,

As this tourney has continued, I find that I'm enjoying playing Black more than White, which I guess is kind of strange given my success with White. With Black, I'm getting a feel for the patience that is necessary. It seems to me that if Black is patient, focuses on development, and looks for exchanges early on, that Black has the advantage.

I think much of White's success in this tourney has to do with the ratings of the participants. Only 2 of 11 participants are above 1700. It seems to me that the remaining 9 participants are more prone to tactical errors and early on, a simple error by Black and *poof*--the Queen is gone.

A Patient Win
Hi everyone,

At the moment I have no real preference for either colour, with white I just hope that I can get an attack going, if not then I must try and narrow the gap in material points because Q v 2 pieces is, I think in the endgame a book win, so I must at least get one or two pawns plus the pieces to redress the balance if I do not get that knight fork in. So far I have managed to do this and at worst come away with a low draw.

As black it is a matter of great patience, all my wins have been very hard work and I have certainly enjoyed a lot of luck, certainly as black against Yoshark and Untateve as white. Anyhow, here is my latest win annotated as follows.

Thankfully the only person I have lost to so far in this tournament is Freddy the Master Mater. Funnily enough I think I put up a better show against him as white than as black!

Cheers,

Joanne
