Removed from the United Kingdom Chess Players & Friends team.
Hi Fellow Chess Lovers, John_F recently removed me from the United Kingdom Chess Players & Friends team for losing a number of games due to time-outs. My mother died suddenly and for a while afterward chess was the last thing on my mind and the time-outs happened. I had played for this team for some time and very much enjoyed the team spirit but my request to return to the team was denied by John_F even after I explained the circumstances. His one and only message to me was a lecture on how I should have contacted him to explain the reason for the time-outs. He then added me to his ignore list so I couldn`t even discuss the matter with him. I was wondering what people`s opinions are this matter? Please let me know. Many thanks, Mark.

I'm sorry about your mother...
...but, I can relate to your captain as well. One of the most frustrating things in timeouts for the team captains is that the team members do not contact their captain and explain themselves after timeouts have occurred, even if this is a very well-established practice in the team. That said, I would have personally probably let you back into the team after hearing the whole story, given particularly that you're a paying subscriber. Without knowing the exact circumstances, I don't think I can say anything else. Was that your first set of timeouts in team games? Regards, MaCa, The Captain of TFIF.

In addition...
I must add that I cannot approve the way how you started a thread into every single GK forum area about this, with near-identical contents. That has nothing to do with hearing different opinions, but rather suggests that you want to make this private issue as public as possible. Plus, making doubles is, in itself, generally poor forum conduct. This is a team-related issue, and should be discussed within this forum area. I'm personally making an attempt to get the other threads deleted through the thread moderation feature so that the discussion remains where it should be. Regards, MaCa.

A sense of perspective.
For a fleeting moment there Maca I sensed a modicum of compassion regarding my personal circumstances but when you reminded me of the importance of "poor forum conduct" and "making doubles" it really put my loss into perspective. Contrary to your intention of taking a personal crusade against my other threads, I have recieved many messages of support and conselling which have restored my belief in charity of the spirit. My intention in posting on other forums was to simply make fellow players aware that a minority of team captains take the opinion that human tragedy is no excuse for breaking chess etiquette. The great Benjamin Franklin commented that "The Game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired and strengthened by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions; for life is a kind of Chess". God bless you.
