Indeed
Only a big mistake of your opponent could give you an extra half point. Well done, Soren.
Great Tournament, 8 out of 12 point is a great result.

IM Norm?
Carlos is getting close to that 8 points--needs to pull out two more wins (he doesn't seem to be in danger in any of them. Go, Carlos!! You're playing great chess.

Thanks Loren.
I agree I have a small advantage in the three remaining games and of course, but very serious
mistake, no risk of losing.

But unfortunately, I'm not very close to victory in any of them. If anything, in the game against
the Argentinian IM.

Fight your games until the end, we have to get to 29 or 29.5 points.

Carlos

Pretty Much Assured of 2
I should get at least 2 out of my remaining 4 (1 win, 1 drawn ending, 1 even middlegame, and 1 worse ending with slim chances for a draw. I'm really regretting those two messed-up half points. I usually don't play that carelessly, so I'll just have to play better next time around.

Regards,
Loren

23 + 2 = 25 so to get 29.5 you and Hans would need 4.5 out of 7. Or else I'll have to get lucky and hold a draw in my worse-off position!

Japan
Hello Loren
Hello team-members

I hope you, Loren, and your family are well. The news from Japan are horrible and the situation of the nuclear power-enterprises are of greatest worry.

Kind regards

We Are Fine
Neither I nor any of my family members were in Japan at the time of the quake, so we are all fine. I have been in contact with many of my friends and colleagues there, and they are not all so lucky. Some have lost their homes, and a few are still out of touch--I am hoping and praying that they just have no power at the moment (many places still have no power, and northern Japan is cold this time of year).

Regards to All,
Loren

I'm very pleased to here that you and your family are doing well and are okay. It is really a disaster and a tragedy there have hit Japan and we can only hope the world community will help Japan back on it's feet again.

Forecast
So close to a fabulous win, Carlos! In any case, you outplayed one of the very best players in the event and came within a millimeter of a win. Well done!

I continue to have one winning position, one dead draw (where I blew a win earlier), one very tiny endgame edge (probable draw, but still some chances for the opponent to go wrong), and one very tricky theoretical ending where I might have a draw but more likely have a loss. So 2/4 is easy, but to get 2.5 or 3 will be very difficult and might require help from my opponents.

Looking at the standings and our remaining games, it appears likely that Metel will hold us off, but perhaps a few of their remaining games vs. the Argentine players and others might go "our" way and let us catch up. I do think that we will finish ahead of the Psychos and probably Alpha, and I don't think the Argentines will quite catch up. But I could easily be wrong!!

My best guess is that we will be 3rd or tied for 3rd/4th. I wish I had the two half-points I gave away back--maybe Caissa will return them in my two games where I need help, but Caissa is unpredictable.

Hey, Soren, in the coming week I will be onstage for 4 performances in the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta "The Mikado" playing the role of the Mikado (emperor of Japan). Have you ever seen this production or performed any of it?

Loren

Loren
Thanks for your forecast!
Sounds like a really great event ahead of you and yes I have seen The Mikado before, (twice) one in Copenhagen and one in Prague. It is a great play with a lot of wonderful music in it and I wish you the best of luck with the performance and it would be great to here back from you after the performance!

Unfortunately
our 3rd board player Harpov has lost on timeout, in a game. I know that Carlos and myself have wrote him several time about this, but have so far failed to get any answer back

One More Win--Now Your Turn, Carlos!!
Loren--Sergio Jimena Bonillo 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e5 3.dxe5 Ng4 4.Nf3 Bc5 5.e3 Nc6 6.a3 Ngxe5?! (The standard ... a5 is better. White gains space now.) 7.b4 Be7 8.Bb2 Bf6 9.Nxe5 Nxe5 10.Nc3 d6 11.Qd2 O-O 12.Be2 Re8 13.Nd5 Bh4 14.O-O (White has a nice edge but no clear win yet. Black decides he cannot wait for White to finish his development and launch a K-side attack, so he creates counterplay at the cost of creating a weakness at d6.) c6 15.Nf4 a5 16.Rfd1 Bf5 17.b5 Rc8 18.Qxd6 Qxd6 19.Rxd6 Be7 20.Rdd1 (Not Bxe5? f6!) f6 21.Bd4 cxb5 22.cxb5 Rc2 (So White won a P but Black gets active play on the c-file.) 23.Kf1 Rec8 24.f3 g5 25.Nd5 Kf7 26.Nb6 (Just checking whether Black will do something silly.) R8c7 27.Nd5 Rc8 28.a4! (In playing this, I saw the idea of the K-march starting on move 37. In side variations, the a5 P becomes weak.) Be6 29.Nb6 R8c7 30.f4! 5 Moves Ago . . .
. . . your position was definitely looking good, Carlos! And you have a shot to win the other one, too. Get that IM norm!! You've played beautifully all tournament long and will be our only undefeated teammate--just what we were all hoping for when the rest of us suggested you for Bd. 1 as a tough man to beat. You and Soren have been great. I played some good games, but I definitely should have had more points.

Your chessfriend,
Loren

Thanks Loren
Five plays later, Black's position is to achieve a near final victory over Argentine opponent. Then,
I will try to allocate my efforts to organize 'a dance of queens' round the pawns to win the last
game.

Perhaps I would have had to risk a little extra to get a victory, but the responsibility to play as
first board made me conservative.

Thanks anyway.

The Other Blown Win
I have mentioned a number of times that I threw away two half-points by allowing opponents to escape lost positions. The first was the endgame vs. Taranto. Here is the second, where I finally had to concede a draw:

Loren vs. Garcia Ramirez 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.f3 O-O 6.Be3 a6 7.Qd2 Nbd7 8.Nh3 c5 9.Be2 cxd4 10.Bxd4 Ne5 11.Nf4 e6 12.O-O b6 13.Rfd1 Qc7 14.Rac1 Bb7 (White has a nice edge and will be able to create threats in many parts of the board.) 15.Be3 Ne8 16.b4! (The cP remains poisoned.) Rb8 17.Na4! (White forces a breakthrough.) Bc6 18.b5! Bd7 19.c5! bxc5 20.Nxc5! dxc5 21.Rxc5 Qd8 22.bxa6 Qe7 23.a7 Ra8 24.Rxe5 Ba4 25.Ra5 Bxd1 26.Bxd1 Qc7 27.Ra6 (The dust settles and White's advantage should lead to a win with careful play because the aP will eventually win material.) Bh6 28.g3 Qb7 29.Ra4 Ng7 30.Kg2 Bxf4 31.gxf4 h6 32.Be2 Rfd8 33.Qb4 (Up to here, Black was playing quickly rarely taking more than a few days per move, but now the game slowed to a crawl. The next 10 moves took nearly a year! On each move, Black went up to the 20 day limit and even took some "penalty" days. In addition, Black took all of his vacation. I foolishly let myself get bored and lost track of the game.) Qc7 34.Qc5 Qxc5 35.Bxc5 Rd2 36.Kf2 Kh7 37.Ke3 Rb2 38.Ba6 e5 39.f5 gxf5 40.exf5 Nxf5+ 41.Ke4 Ng7 42.Kxe5 Kg8 43.Be3!? (This in itself is fine, but putting the B on the same file as the K means I need to be careful, and instead . . .) Rb1 44.Rc4?? (. . . I took a move off of my analysis board without noticing that I had already made a move for White and Black BEFORE and had the Black N on e8. White can win with a variety of moves, including 44.Kd5, the move I had made on my analysis board.) Re1 (Suddenly, Black started moving every day again *LOL*!) 45.Re4 f5! (Unfortunate.) 46.Bc4+ Kh7 47.Bf2 fxe4 48.Bxe1 e3 49.Bd3+ Kg8 50.Ke4 Rxa7 (With the aP gone and his remaining P's split, White can only hope for a blunder. But none happens, alas!) 51.Bb4 Kf7 52.Kxe3 Rb7 53.a3 Rb8 54.Bc4+ Kg6 55.Bd5 Ne8 56.Be4+ Kf7 57.Bd5+ Kg6 58.Kd4 Kf5 59.Be4+ Ke6 60.Bd5+ Kf5 61.Kc5 Nf6 62.Bc6 Ke6 63.Bc3 Nd7+ 64.Kd4 Nb6 65.a4 Rd8+ 66.Kc5 Nd5 67.Bd4 Rc8 68.Kb5 0.5-0.5 Very embarrassing. I am sorry, teammates.
