You need to contact the GK staff for that. They can do it for you, but it typically takes a few days.

No need to contact GK about this. Just promote one of the team members to co-captain and then promote him another time, this time to captain.

I'm wondering this, too. I'm the only co-captain and the captain has been offline for 70 days and inactive for almost a year now. I'm not sure if I should try to contact GK to promote me. But if/when the captain comes back, he could be a little ticked that I took his spot? Any opinions?

If something happens to you, then your team is dead because GK will do nothing. Better a little ticked, than no team. You could give it back, if that is a concern.
