Janowski exploits two "holes" in Kupchik's Pawns to great effect. Annotations by J. R. Capablanca.
1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Be7 5. e3 Nbd7 6. Bd3 dxc4 7. Bxc4 Nb6
The idea is to post a Kt at Q 4, but as it is the other Knight which will go there, this maneuver does not seem logical. The Kt at Kt 3 does nothing except to impede the development of the Black Q B.

8. Bd3
If White instead plays 8 B - Kt 3, he can advance his K P immediately after 8 ... K Kt - Q 4 9 B x B Q x B.

8... Nfd5 9. Bxe7 Qxe7 10. Nf3
White cannot now play 10 P - K 4 because of 10 ... Kt - K B 5 threatening both Kt x K Kt P and Kt x B ch, removing the important White K B.

10... O-O 11. O-O Bd7 12. Rc1
White now threatens to win a Pawn with 13 Kt x Kt Kt x Kt 14 P - K 4 Kt moves 15 R x P.

12... c6
Before assuming such a defensive position, Black should have played Kt x Kt.

13. Ne4 f5
Positional suicide, creating a hole on K 5 for White's K Kt.

14. Nc5 Be8 15. Ne5
The position of White's Knights is ideal. They completely dominate the board.

15... Rb8
There is no point to this move, unless Black intends to then play ... Kt - Q 2.

16. Re1 Rf6 17. Qf3 Rh6 18. Qg3 Rc8
White threatened to win the Exchange with Kt - B 7 or Kt - Kt 4.

19. f3 Rc7 20. a3 Kh8 21. h3
White feels that he has more than enough time to prepare his attack, and wants his own position to be perfectly secure before beginning it.

21... g5 22. e4 f4 23. Qf2 Ne3
Better was 23 ... Kt - B 3, intending a later ... Kt - Q 2.

24. Rxe3
With this sacrifice of the Rook for a Knight and a Pawn, White obtains an overwhelming position.

24... fxe3 25. Qxe3 Nc8
25 ... Kt - Q 2 was better, to eliminate one of White's Knights. However, even this move would fail against 26 Kt (B 5) x Kt B x Kt 27 Q x P Q x Q 28 Kt - B 7 ch K - Kt 2 29 Kt x Q. White would have two Pawns for the Exchange and a vastly superior position.

26. Ng4 Rg6 27. e5 Rg7 28. Bc4 Bf7
Black's moves are forced, and his position is getting more and more constricted.

29. Nf6 Nb6
This wandering Knight has done nothing throughout the game.

30. Nce4 h6 31. h4 Nd5 32. Qd2 Rg6 33. hxg5 Qf8
If 33 ... P x P, 34 K - B 2 and Black is helpless.

34. f4 Ne7 35. g4 hxg5 36. fxg5
Black resigns. There is nothing to be done. If 36 ... B - Kt 1, White plays 37 Q - R 2 ch K - Kt 2 38 B x P.
