There are always three alternatives. One, resign. Two, offer a draw, and if your opponent doesn't draw, you draw first and shoot him. Three, grab the white queen and take off on a tour of the solar system while your opponent is still pondering his next move but nine.

Earthbound chessplayers would no doubt play the inferior Rxg6 at this point, but, as the Martian proverb says, the ways of Chess passeth all understanding.

White has seven pawns, Black five. If either side had an even number at this point, the Xanatos Gambit would become applicable.

The position is sharp, but Black's attack is flat.

Also worth considering was the deadly fork Nxf4. Only trouble is that forks aren't a great weapon when the enemy has spaceships.

Anyone who would have played Qe6 mate at this point fails to appreciate the most important thing about chess: it doesn't matter if you win or lose. Or how you play the game. It's all about one thing and one thing only, and that's style.
