Hello, all. First, Merry Christmas:) Second, this was a team match. A very quick one at that ;)

1. e4	Standard.



1... e6	French. Some players don't like it; some like it. I'm neutral on it.



2. d4	Most often reply.
	1 comment jeich (1200) on 29-Aug-14: White grabs a central space advantage establishing a large center. If white can defend it, black will be cramped all game.


2... d5	Still, best.



3. f3	?! Ok, this is new to me! I prefer exd5 or Nc3 or Nd2 or e5.
	1 comment jeich (1200) on 29-Aug-14: Possibly trying to keep a large center. I nice idea but the specifics of the position do not allow it to work (Qh4+).


3... dxe4	I think this is best, you?

4. fxe4	Now, I could go Qh4+, but, I think it's a trap! What do you think?

Qh4+ 5 Ke2 Qxe4 cdeburca (1815) on 28-Dec-12: It's not a trap; white has just blundered badly. There is a line against the French where you play f3, but the point is to sac the pawn and recapture with the knight, hoping to gain in development. I don't think this is the line though, but if it were, white would need to play something like 4. Be3 instead.


4... e5	!? Opening up the board!
	2 comments l-d-j (1747) on 30-Dec-12: @jkarp: no KG here, that's 1.e4 e5 2.f4. jeich (1200) on 29-Aug-14: I could not have resisted Qh4+ then scoop up the e-pawn. This move by black seems to be for a long term advantage. Black can give white an isolated e-pawn and his light squared bishop is no longer the "problem bishop" as it so often is in the French defense.


5. d5	? I think Nf3 was NECESSARY!!!

	2 comments easy19 (1200) on 31-Dec-12: is it winning ? I just see about 2 pawns down but no devolped pieces on both sides. jeich (1200) on 29-Aug-14: It is double edged. It will pick up the e-pawn but cost tempi due to the queen being in enemy territory. I think it is enough compensation to justify but not decisive yet.


6. Kd2 Qxe4	I have blasted open the board.

7. Nc3	Guarding the d5-pawn and attacking my Queen.

Nc3 jeich (1200) on 29-Aug-14: White must have been chomping at the bit to develop a piece by the 7th move. Attacking the queen may have given a false sense of relief as well.

9. Ke1 Bxc3+	! Trade when you're ahead in material.



10. Bd2	?? Why not just take the Bishop?

Did he really have a rating of 1800? blitzkov (1200) on 30-Dec-12: l-d-j, yes, he did. jeich (1200) on 29-Aug-14: The French defense is the second most popular e4 defense in master level chess games. Many amateurs, even advanced players steer clear of it until they are beaten badly by it. I know because I was in that category a few months ago.
