1. e4	Team match between my nephew (Horn of Gondor) and Mario. Both parties made many significant errors.



1... c6	Caro-Kann defense. White typically responds with d4.



2. d4 g6	Black usually plays d5. Here g6 is less common, but as the second most frequent response it is still on book.



3. Nf3	Nc3 is more common than Nf3. Still book.



3... Nh6	Bg7 fianchetto’s the bishop. Nh6 is off book, shoving the knight to the field edge



4. Ne5 Bg7 5. Bc4	While Nh6 may be covering Xxf7, d5 better blocks the threat.

5... O-O 6. Qf3 d6 7. Bf4	Not a defense against pawn spears knight.



7... Bg4 8. Qg3 dxe5 9. Bd2	Better would be Bxh6, leaving Bg4 undefended. Second best is taking the pawn, which doubles pawns but is better than sacrificing d4 along with control of the center.

White leaves a piece hanging at e5, but Black returns the compliment by 7...Bg4, which ought to have induced the rebuff 8.Nxg4. But then, after ...dxe5, White that 9.Bxh6 does not keep material level, after 9...Qxd4! But 9.Bxe5 would have at least have contained the damage ... a little.


9... Qxd4	Bc4, b2, and e4 are vulnerable.

10. Na3 Qxb2 11. Rb1 Qd4 12. O-O	White knocks the king’s scaffold out from under Bd2 (white’s black bishop).
	1 comment archduke_piccolo (2355) on 10-Dec-25: After 10.Na3, Black could have picked up a pawn, with tempo, by 10...Qxe4 11.Kf1 Qd4 - 'as you were' with the White e-pawn having winked out of existence. But now White throws away more material. 12.Bxh6 Bxh6 13,Qxg4 Qc3+ kept for Black a winning edge, but at least White would not have shed more material.


12... Qxd2 13. Rbd1	No. Bxd1.

13... Qf4	…or black is up eight so trading queens is ok.



14. Qh4	Now Rd1 is a free gift to black. Rook and c pawn too. Well, white can play Qxe7 somewhere.



14... g5	The queen is trapped. A counter threat entails a queen exchange, most likely one that breaks the White Castle pawns.



15. Qg3 Bxd1 16. Rxd1 Na6 17. c3 Rfd8 18. Rb1 Qd2 19. h4 gxh4 20. Qxh4 Bf6 21. Qh5 Qxc3 22. Rb3 Qa1+ 23. Kh2 b5	I’m thinking white should go offense with Rg1+. Or possibly better, Nc2. If black responds Qxa2, Rg3+ gives her up to the white bishop.



24. Be2 Qxa2 25. Rg3+ Bg7	Kh1 instead, maybe? Loss of the black bishop offset by choice of Qxa3 or Qxe2.
	1 comment archduke_piccolo (2355) on 10-Dec-25: This bishop retreat is a terrible blunder, transforming a winning game into a losing. Black had no choice but to play 25...Kh8, where it would have been perfectly safe. Now White wins...


26. Qg5	Oops, my teammate was playing black. White was getting trashed, down 12 points.
	1 comment archduke_piccolo (2355) on 10-Dec-25: With this move, White threatens mate, and wins material - bishop and knight for nothing. But so vast is the material deficit already, that that merely transforms minus-12 to minus-six - still a loss. The bone-cruncher move was 26.Qxh6, also threatening checkmate, but with a gain of tempo that more than restores the balance: 26.Qxh6!! Kf8 27.Qxg7+ Ke8 28.Bg4! ... threatens checkmate again; 28...e6 29.Rf3 ... White has a tremendous attack; 29...Rd7 30.Qg8+ Ke7 31.Qxa8 ... Now, about to pick up the indefensible c-pawn, White restores the material parity, but with a much more active game.


26... Nf5	Delaying the inevitable? Kf2 at least let’s the king slip out a side door.

27. exf5 f6 28. Qxg7#

Black could have oiled his way out of trouble by 26...Kf8 29.Qxg7+ Ke8 30.Re3 ... (best) 30...f6 31.Nxb5!! Now Black gets into real trouble after 31...cxb5 32.Bxb5+, but 32...Qf7 preserves winning chances.
